What country are you in? I'm in Canada, and it's a very good thing I had to pay tax, otherwise I would have to pay Canadian Border Services a fee for my notebook crossing the border, which would be much more expensive than paying tax.

Well you are buying an item from a store, paying taxes do suck, but if you didn't it would be quite illegal of both you and Alienware.

When I went to the States on holiday in April, I asked a college student how much her tuition cost per year.

I am never complaining about Canadian tuition again.

While no one likes sales tax, your thread has little point relating to alienware.

Whether any company collects it or not, you are required to pay sales tax on any item you purchase.

Because Dell has a physical presence in every state, however, alienware is required by law to collect taxes.

I don't see a reason to blame them for the ridiculously enforced tax policies in the US and NY in particular. (Don't start a debate here, I know political discussion is not allowed on this forum. But then, you opened the door.)

Their choices are collect tax or be raided by the IRS. What would your decision be?

my point was that since AW does not have a physical store, much like amazon, paying tax sounded strange... But I guess the dell presence counts as alienware... Still there's no AW laptops at dell stores...

    Still sucks...

You will now find that amazon has to collect tax to thanks to a redefinition of "nexus" in new york state law.

And alienware was covered under the corporate ownership by Dell.
Even if they only had a warehouse.

But I agree.... 8.375% sales tax is ridiculous under the current overall taxation system.

Count yourself lucky, here in Holland BTW (dutch equivalent of VAT) is 19%, as opposed to the 17.5%, not much more I know, but on something like this it soon adds up.

Bit of a con that they add it at the end though, but what can you do?

I think why its weird to some of us here in the states is say for example for me if I order computer parts from say newegg. I wont have to pay tax since they are based out of california with me being in missouri. Some places do charge tax and some dont. Amazon for example I dont get taxed from either as long as you purchase it online. Just depends on your location a lot of the time.

    New Hampshire=0% sales tax=what I paid

If you have family in surrounding states with smaller tax percentages, ship it there and make the drive. Although these days it might end up costing you more paying for the gas necessary to go pick it up.
