After a few weeks of reading these message boards and over 3 years wanting a notebook I'm about to press the checkout button. I'm going to opt for the Alienware Finance: Pay in 9 months hopefully my credit rating is good enough to be accepted.

I would like to ask a few things. I know it says it clearly on their website but I want to hear it from someone other than them. If you pay in full within those 9 months, you don't get charged ANY INTEREST. Is that right? Also, how do you pay them? Is there an option on their website to pay the rest of the order or what's the process? I'd love an answer to this from someone who's been through it.

you don't get charged any interest but you do get charged a one-off early payment fee of approx £50.

Also, i would advise you to pay off by 8 months 1 week at the latest as things take time to go through etc.

Cool - early payment fee? Is that when you pay? I know it's £20 to go through their Finance system and 5% deposit.

I plan to pay in 4 months at most so no problem.

I really really really suggest you get a credit card to do the purchase, alienware only offers mailing in your payments to make them. All it will take is one statement not making it to you and your gonna get screwed. At least with most credit cards you can call and make a payment over the phone.

I actually just talked to a sales rep and they said I can complete the payment over the phone.

By the way, I do intend to use a credit card to pay initially and then complete the payment later on. It's just that I don't want to pay it all now as I have... quite an overdraft :p but I'm expecting some fat cheques :p.

Just remember, you can't pay off the finance using a credit card (the company (V12) won't accept it as a payment method).

But if I order the laptop with a credit card then what? Will I get rejected from the finance thing? And will I be able to pay off the money with a different card other than the one I 'bought' it with?

You either purchase the laptop with a credit card, or you use the finance option (as far as I know).

What I'm saying is, if you go for the 0% offer. When you come to pay the finance company say in 8 months to avoid any fee's - they will not accept the payment via credit cards.

My parents are getting the not finance version for the following reasons.

up to 30 percent extra charges. a 3k notebook, that's 900 bucks extra
also they said something like a $15 charge per month - 3 years its like $540
thats almost 1k extra right there.... basically 1/3+ of the notebook for paying monthly..

That is of course true if you do not settle the total amount by the time the interest free period is up. They charge you 29.9% or whatever from the period when you first had the money if you are just one day late. They also make sure it is hard as hell for you to make payments :).

    btw 30% on $3000 would be $900 :)

    You said upto 30% extra charges - a 3k notebook = 300 more.

    30% of 3000 = 900 :).

Anyway it would be 30% of the original amount, then 30% for however long you let the payments drag on :) - so it could end up costing an absolute fortune!
