I'm about to purchase an M15, but I can't justify $400 for 4GB of RAM. So what I plan on doing is ordering 1GB, and purchase 4GB of OCZ RAM for $80 at some computer shop and install it myself

Would this be a wise decision? Or does alienware use some martian type of RAM that the charge a ridiculous amount for? Also, the RAM that ships with the PC is slower than the FSB. Would I have problems upgrading to 800mhz RAM to couple with the FSB of the T9300?

yep its a perfectly wise decision .. a lot fo people do it! .. and sorry but you cant use a 800mhz ram, it will only downclock to 667mhz .. the chipset used by the m15x is getting pretty dated ..

But the FSB of the CPU is 800mhz, surely it would work out no?

nope. On the plus side, you can go get yourself 4GB x 2 ram since you're running at 667 speeds. Only get that if you have a 64 bit OS though.

Will the difference in performance be that substantial? 667 vs. 800?
