I'm getting an m15x and was wondering whether anyone knew of any good travel chargers which i can use in flights, cars etc.?
And has anyone got any suggestions on laptop sleeve cases?..ie: are the neoprene ones any good?..

    Thanks,

    Arji

HI, the chargers issue may be a problem, i'd recommend using the AW supplied power pack as you've got maintain the voltage etc. I'd also check the airline, sometime you're not allowed to plug in your notebook inside the plane?

I'd also recommend the aluminium case from Alienware, especially for travelling, you can get all your kit in it and your notebook will be protected.

    Just my 2p.

    BTW Welcome to NBR

    No problem

As far as the case idea, it depends on how protected you want your notebook. You can get all sorts of back-packs etc.

How about the satchel (messenger bag i think), that's what i was going to go for as it's cheaper and just as good...

yerr i might go for a messenger bag and buy a 15" neoprene sleeve just to give it some extra protection!

    Thanks!

Cool, they both look good. I like the stealthy approach to carrying notebooks. I agree that having an Alienware branded bag would look cool but, might attract the wrong kind of attention at the same time.

I'm going to get one of those Belkin sleeves to store mine in, it won't be a "portable" machine but i want to keep dust off of it lol

So arjee, when are you going to place your order for an M15X?

    @ arjeee - No problemo :)

The bag from Wenger has got this in it's description -
    Good choice man

    The sleeve looks good too..
As OB stated ever-so psycically (how do you spell that word  MS Word will tell me) Oh it was right.. Psshhh
Anyways as OB stated so psycically - What's your config and when you looking to pick it up ?

    Nice specs :)
Just wondering.. Why are you getting the "Alienware® m15x 6-cell Lithium-Ion Additional Battery (Black)" instead of the Smartbay Battery ?
Not available in the UK ? (Thought that was a rumour)

Yea, it's best you only get 1GB from AW.. Do remember you'll have to put it back in if you want to ship your m15x to AW for repairs/servicing..
Most people go for 1 year cuz of budget constraints - Steep increase in price with each year you add on. However some users chose to opt/upgrade to 3 year because of some of the problems it's been facing.
With the major problem of downclocking being fixed (99%) I think people may go back to one year.

You're not waiting for the black or skullcap designs ?

I'd consider the additional warranty, let's face it after 3 years it's going to be osolete anyway and you'll probably be thinking about a new machine but, if it goes wrong you'll have to pay...

What's the Smart Bay: 160GB 5400RPM Hybrid Drive w/ 256MB flash memory Smart Bay? Does it use the smart-bay and HDD slot or something?
I'm surprised you're not having the 200Gb 7200 HDD, better performance, unless you're not gaming?
    Nice notebook though (",)

I don't know about AW UK, but here in the US, you can always upgrade from a one year warranty later on. In fact, AW just sent me an email reminding me to upgrade my warranty since it is almost over. But, I don't need to since I got my m5550 credited already.

Just had a chat with the a sales rep and he told me the additional battery they sell you is a battery that can be slotted in to the smartbay.

and the reason i went for the 3 year warranty is because the two years warranty is a £118 but the three years one is only an extra 40 quid on top of that and im going to start uni in september so i was hoping i could keep this laptop for a good 4 - 5 years.

to OB: and yerr the 160GB 5400RPM Hybrid Drive w/ 256MB flash memory Smart Bay does use the smart bay but i intend to just store all my movies on to there. i would then take it out and replace it with the smartbay battery. And the main hard drive which is fixed in the laptop is 160GB 7200 RPM (8MB Cache) which should be ample for gaming?...and on top of that i am going to buy a WD 320GB passport HD. so i should be aye wid space :) ...lol i hope so anyway.....the only thing im going to have on the main hard drive(160GB 7200 RPM) are games, important docs and normal programs which should take up a max of 90GB(highly doubt ill get to that).

And I'm not so keen on the alien skull cap...dunno why...i guess i dont want it to attract to much attention!

EDIT: thinkin about it now...wen you said black wraithers, does that mean it is the same design as the silver one only shiny glossy black rather than shiny glossy silver?....coz i would love to get a shiny glossy back cover...lol

I don't know....I'll probably go for the 1 year and see how i get on. I'm thinking about going for the three years, saves forgetting to sort it lol

Do you think it would be cheaper to do it in one or upgrade?

Ahh.. It's good you confirmed about the Smart Bay Battery..

Hehe.. Don't worry the AlienFX and Backlit Keyborad will attract enough attention.. Woops that's exactly what you don't want :D

    Yes !!!! GLOSSY BLACK !!! :D :D :D
Just don't know when they're going to release it.. My guess keeps changing, but I'll say two weeks from now since they finally got the BIOS update out to fix the downclocking and can focus on other things like video drivers.. & the new cases !!

@ OB - I *heard* that it would be $350 to upgrade before the end of one year (in US though) Can anyone clarify? Customer support won't be awake for another 2 hours :p

hmm...just had another chat with the sales rep and they said that they do not have info on warranty extensions....though i doubt it will become cheaper so i may as well take it!

@ wraithers: OMG!!...glossy black...that would pretty much make it the best lookin laptop around!!

and if you guys have trouble contacting sales support just go on the uk alienware site and talk to the on the chat to sales support thingy when your configuring the m15x.

EDIT: im gonna wait till the start of may and see if they are going to bring out any new designs....if not im going to have to order it because im going to need time to get used to it over the summer hols and also im going to india on holiday..straight after that ill go to uni...so ill have to order it early may! how long do you reckon they take on average to deliver the m15x(including building it)..coz ill need it within 2 months...am going on holiday early july.

Maybe when you deecide what model you're going for M15 - 17X you can get the voltage info for the charger. You could ask the airline if it's ok then, that way you can make sure you can still game etc. whilst flying...puts a new spin on the phrase "mobile gaming" (",)

i've never flown with Sri Lankan, but as they're saying they've got three charging stations on the plane, wouldn't they _not_ be placed at a seat? they're probably going to be an unused overhead locker or so. so unless they'll let you pretty much camp out next to that locker, you won't be able to use the charger all the time... or am I wrong?

well i prolly wont game during flight...lol might play some casual AOE or something...but nothing too intensive...and ill prolly get bored of it real quick like i always do!...and theres loadsa movies to watch inflight anyway...so ill be aye....and seriously...how many ppl carry around laptops nowadays and actually work on them throughout the whole flight...they may do for like an hour or two...iv been on at least 10 flights over the past 2-3 years and i aint seen ppl use there laptop throughout the whole flight so i cud prolly get away with camping at one of the charging stations!

I;ve heard the ZM-NC2000 will be a good one to choose?...any suggestions?

well the zalmans are universally regarded as some of the best laptop coolers. note however that the nc2000 is the larger one (compared to the nc1000), so i don't think it'll be _compact_, however it might be better seeing that the m15x is larger than most 15.4" laptops (the nc1000 just fits "normal" 15.4" laptops).
