How many times a year do alienware update their M15 / 17x on the hardware side, like a new revision or a more powerful GPU, is the r3 estimated to come out soon? how long ago was R2 with crossfire HD 5870s released? i probably need another month or 2 if I want to get this laptop just wondering if I should wait for the new revision.

The R2 with 5870s was released like about 5 - 6 months ago earlier this year. So really not that long ago.

Hardware refreshes maybe once a year if your lucky depending on what type of hardware it is.

If you can wait it out till next year maybe another 2 - 4 months there will and should be something on the horizon. Just not to sure when and what. However there we be new stuff for sure early next year if not late this year.

    Cheers. :)

I'd hate to get a specced out alienware and then the next month a new one comes along, I think I may want to wait the 2-4 months and see what comes out :p

Also does the m17x ever run hot during game play? Currently have an acer 8930G and even on L4D the bottom of hte laptop feels like an oven, is a notebook cooler neccesary?

Yeh I know what you mean hey chiefs. It is so close to the time of something new coming out I would just wait as well chiefs. I know its hard ehahaah    ;) ;) :D :D :D In the long run you will be happy eheheh. Hopefully lol. ;) :D

Oh what temps do the Acer reach?

They M17x does get pretty hot like all gaming notebooks do however the temps are pretty good. Nothing alarming and no you don't need a notebook cooler however if you do use one temps will be super duper cool. A lot of us have also done some cooling mods where we changed the thermal paste and thermal pads on the CPU and GPU. Now we're all rocking some seriously insane low temps. Like super low. We hit like a max of 70 degs on the CPU and GPUs whilst gaming for like a few hours. We idle at like in the low 40s just browsing the net and doing stuff apart from gaming.

    Cheers. :)

acer 8930G have a common problem of faulty temperature detector, but put it like this you could probably cook a full english breakfast under the bottom of it after about 20-30 mins gameplay on L4D all med settings.

If we were to change cooling paste on CPU & GPU would this void the warranty?

    ahahaha LOL LOL :D :D

Nice one ahahah. That sounds like my NEC P8100 notebook LOL.

As long as you keep the old parts you take out and don't damage anything no it won't void your warranty.

    Cheers. :)
