Yesterday I had did a fresh install and went onto dell website and download all the driver from there. After the install everything work find but then afterward the alienfx start having problem so I did another fresh install and try to install my old command center. Now my whole computer doesn't light up anymore. It said I got some kind of error and I need to debug it.

    The error said:
Unhandeld exception has occurred in your application. If you click Continue, the application will ignore this error and attempt to continue. If you click Quit, the application will close immediately.
    ********JIT Debugging*********
To enable just-in-time (JIT) debugging, the .config file for this application or computer(machine.config) must have the jit Debugging vaule set in the system.windows forms section. The application must also be compiled with debugging enabled.

no install the important audio, video and all other drivers before the osd and command center then install

    OSD
    Command Center in that order

not at the same time lol

lemme know if that fixes your issue or else you will need to call dell for a mobo replacement as that would be the next problem if your lights still don't work

The recommended order of driver installation is:

    1. Chipset
    2. OSD
    3. Display
    4. Everything else
    5. Command Center

If you are having problems and all of your lights are out despite having done:

    1. The power drain trick
    2. Uninstalling and cleaning the registry (using CCleaner) and reinstalling
    3. Fresh install and installing in the order above

Then I'm afraid you'll need a mobo replacement since your FX controller is probably shot. It seems to happen a lot of the M15x. Happened to me aswell after owning it for 3 days lol. Good luck.

There is nothing you need to install to make the lights work. If you want to control the lights, you need to have the Command Centre installed or alternatively can give AlienFX Lite a go. Other than that, there are no driver requirements for AlienFX. Its a simple HID device which installs with a windows driver.

The first thing you should so when something happens to your AlienFX light, is to do a hard reset:

    1) take out power cord
    2) take out battery
    3) hold down the power button for 10 seconds
    4) Reinsert power cord (and batter if you want)
    5) Start the pc

Now the alienfx light should be reset and hopefully will work. The good news is that when you have a broken alienfx device, the command centre should not crash, but instead tell you that no device was found. Just out of curiosity, try AlienFX Lite (in my sig) and see if that works to get your lights up. Then you will know whether or not its a hardware issue

No just villosa and soccerthierry just had this problem recently and now you got it. Just strange to see it all happen in a small time frame.

.net framework comes preinstalled with windows 7. I got that error too dttran83 and there was no way to update or install .net framework, you activate it through control panel. I tried so many things and finally gave up because I knew the Fx controller was gone. I even tried Wattos' Lite and it still didn't work. You get the framework error after many reinstalls and the program just ceases to even install right because it can't even contact the controller anymore let alone pick up devices. That's my theory anyway.

Oh and no the tech didn't even touch my laptop. I was able to intercept the mobo when it was being shipped with Unisys and made arrangements with the tech to just drop it off. I do all the repairs myself.

as a final check, can you see the following:

under device manager ( press on computer->right click->properties->advanced system settings -> hardware tab->device manager button)

Under Human Interface Devices, for each HID-compilant device do the following:

Double click on the device->Details Tab. Now select Hardware Ids from the combobox and look for:

    HID\VID_187C&PID_0512
    .

If none of the devices have this string then it means that your controller isnt even starting up and is broken for sure.

Note: the device might also be called Quicksilver instead of HID-compilant

Hey Wattos when replacement the mobo do you need to remove the process and gpu too? What did you do where your alienfx did not work anymore?

Call dell and the technician verified that my motherboard need to be replace. Already got the dispatch out for the part and the technician suppose to call me this Thursday.

Any advice what to expect from the technician? Should I have the service manual ready for him if he not familiar with my laptop? Hope I got one that know what he doing and doesn't scratch my laptop. Man this ruin my week really bad and I have final this week too.

Did you try the power drain trick? Did you also try AlienFX lite?

As for replacing the motherboard, the laptop will be unscrewed into all its pieces. I dont remember whether the gfx card is taken out of the motherboard, but its only 4 more screws to detach the card. You will have to remove the heatsink (for both CPU + GPU).

One thing I can advice on is to get some thermal paste (either Arctic Silver 5 or MX-3, or OCZ Freeze) In my experience the technician never wanted to reapply the paste, but rather put the heeatsink back on.

As for the techs, its really hit or miss. Some people get complete noobs who will try the wrong screws in the wrong places or will try to pry stuff with screwdrivers.

I did try the power drain and still no luck but I haven't try your elitefx yet. I think villoca have the same error as mine and he try everything too and at the end it was the motheroboard that need to be replace.

The tech came by today and replace my motherboard. My board come with the latest bio which was A05. I was really lucky to get one that actually know what he was doing. Everything was finish in a hour. No scratch or ding that I can see. I help him clean my processor, gpu, and both heat sink. I use my own thermal paste which was MX-3. Overall it was good a experience. :) I'm glad that Alienware have great warranty. This next business day service is GREAT!!!

K now I'm doing a fresh install again, do you guy suggest to put the new command center from dell website or from my resource dvd? I don't want to put the old one back on and cause a firmware error which cuased my alienfx to went out the first place.

Install the latest version. I should've mentioned before but my fx controller died after installing CC from the resources disc.

I don't think this is a coincident, as I am ecountering the same issue with my brand new m15x, as I did a fresh install as well and also used the old command centre from the resource disk! Such a bad experience :(

When doing a fresh install, it is best to use the drivers from Dell's website; and not the resource DVD.

    Hey there dttran83,

Sorry I had just seen this post or I would have chimmed in earlier. I just went through this same thing.... board replaced after Command Center update. Do Not Use your resource disk with the old version or your Respawn Disk. Install the latest version from the download section.

According to AW tech, the old version fries the board. I don't see how a software update can do so... but he insists it was the root cause of failure. Fact of the matter was that after I updated the Command Center my system was running slow as crap. I did a respawn using the respawn disk.... pop ...light out.

I'm now trying to decide how to address the issue that I now can no longer use my Respawn disk that I paid for. I'm sure the system will need to be sent back in order to make a new image. Think AW needs to pay for the shipping and a gift card for their mess up. ;)
