Apparently it's impossible to install wireless drivers after a clean install. I love this computer, but I don't think I'd buy it again if I had the chance. There's too many little annoyances and Dell customer support absolutely sucks.

I think I might have been a little harsh...it's not really that the customer service is bad, it's just that it seems like there are a lot of issues that go by Dell and are ignored. The whole headphone jack issue is a good example. I'll be sure to shoot you a PM later on today when I get some more time.

Sure, no problem that's awesome! I'll be checking on it as soon as I can to help you! :) . By the way I totally understand your point of view about the issues but all electronic devices may fail or give you errors, in this case, the wireless driver however it does not happen on all of our computers, it may happen to all types and brands and of course is an easily solved Software issue.
I'll be expecting your PM! :)

    HEEELPP .. I have a serious problem.
On my Alienware m15x r1 (pre) X9000, 4GB RAM, 9800M GT, Windows 7 64, two days ago, I updated the command center at the reboot all the lights are off and if I try to start the alienfxtester, I get the inscription: "no board detected" but in device manager, the device tusb3410 and exclamation point.
I do not have the money to change the motherboard and do not know how to solve the problem, I tried:
install the three versions of the bios x32, x34, x36
    install the command center 1033,1028,1017
pompt use the command by starting the alienfxtester.exe / factory to update the bios or 1:00:35 to 1:00:22, autatemi in an old post I realized that you have to use windows xp ..... but the page does not exist more

I fixed my problem by disconnecting the AlienFX from my keyboard and re-attaching it. It was a hardware fault, just not plugged in. I fail.

Oh no, did you install Alienware Command Centre from the CD?! If you did, then you probably bricked your AlienFX board

If the R4 is anything like the M17x R3, then no unfortunately.
The alien head is either lit by the screen's backlighting or it either has a separate PCB with only white LEDs.

    Hey all.
Using morph mode to get all colors on my laptop from green to yellow to orange to red, it goes green to red smoothly, then jumps back to green like it's made to do.
I was wondering if someone could either make me a script to, or tell me how to, make it go from green to red smoothly, then back to green smoothly, and just keep smoothly transitioning between the two instead of "skipping" from red back to green. That "flash" of color change isn't very appealing (to me) but I like it going from green to red...
    Thanks in advance!

You'll do that in the advanced settings of Alienfx. You select what section of the keyboard you want and then you add the effects manually. You'll just have to do a fade pattern like so

green to yellow, yellow to orange, orange to red, and red to green

Just so that it always starts and ends with the same color to avoid the jumping.

I am having sort of a strange problem.

Firsty of all I am running a m11x r3 so you all know.

For some reason when running with a game I am getting this weird high pitched sound that goes out through my mic apparently. The sound is only there when there is actual changes in the colurs of the AlienFX.

Since I am all for portability I am running a Razer Moray+ mini headset and the high pitched sound seems to get picked upp by the mic when I use it in the plug on the side of the machine and do some gaming.
I hadn't noticed if my friends on teamspeak hadn't told me to listen to it myself.

Is there anything one can do in such a situation?
I am not that keen on opening up the machine just to see if there are wires touching or whatever.
Also if I use the build in mic on the computer there is no high pitched squealing picked up.

    Would love some help.
    Thanks in advance.

Just got a M17xR4 and reinstalled Windows. I'm considering not reinstalling the Alienware Control Center (Command Center?) software because I don't really feel the need to change my lighting, and its other features like system configuration seem to be the same as what's available via the Windows 7 Control Panel.

Are there other considerations in support of CC that I'm missing? Or is it really mainly just used to fiddle with the lights?

    Thanks!

    Hi All,

have read lots of articles on this forum and they have been a big help for me with my alienware.

    So first off details:

    Alienware M17X R1 laptop
    4gb Ram
    2x 250gb HDD raided
    2x Nvidia Geforce GTX280M
    Intel Core 2 Duo 2.6
    Windows 7 home Premium 64bit

    Issue:
The issue i am having is that after having to re-install all the software on my laptop after it came back from AWA repairs (as they gave me a blank computer back) the Alien FX has never worked properly. Now i have colors and lights all over the keyboard and where they should be. So i dont think the controller has died. I can change the color of the Alienware tractx mouse fine, but when i select the latpopt in comand centre i get an error of
" The device you have selected is included in the current theme but, Alien FX Cannont detect this device on your system. Do you want to remove this device from the current theme".

Now what makes it even stranger is that when i loaded up battlefield 3 the keyboard and mouse all started changing color. I read on a thread here that it is because the software is equiped to interface with the laptop.

Any who. Hope someone can help. I have re-installed the latest version of CC and the TP drivers. very confused. Everything else on the CC works fine.

    Regards,
    Sean.

I just uninstalled CC and TP, rebooted into safe mode, run cc cleaner and cleaned up the regs, rebooted and re-installed CC and TP.

Issue remains. How do i find out what version of Bios i have?

created a diagnostic usb. rebooted and tested. was unable to test the sensor keys. so rebooted the computer and it worked.

changed all the colors. i wonder how long it will last. all colors are changing and all regions. not sure what fixed it.

Did you use the command center from dells page or from the disc that came with your computer?

If you used the disc that came with the computer, your lights are broken now :(

This is probably a n00b question but on my m14x R2's A/C adapter, is there any way to change the blue ring light at the base of the power cord? My m11x didn't come with one of those, it was strictly a black wall plug and brick with a green led on the actual brick. The light on the m14x is where the cable meets the back of the laptop chassis. Is that a controllable lighting zone? Thanks for any advice. :)

Here's another strange issue I had with my m14x R2 tonight. I updated to Alienware Command Ctr. 2.8.8.0 and everything ran fine at first. But just 20 minutes ago, I noticed the power "Alien head" button was completely dark. No HDD eye blinking effect and no outline color. I restarted Windows and ran a quick scandisk. Once Windows booted back up, everything was fine. The keyboard and other zones lit up first, then the power button after a couple minute delay. Anyone else had this issue before?

So I'm sitting here with my brand new m17x and already seing some issues...

I wanted to turn off the lights completely so I found out the way to do it was to right click the alienware head in the task bar...

Well.. Nothing happens! There is no list of options when right clicking.. Shouldn't there be a "go dark" setting amongst other things ?
I've tried upgrading the command center drivers, but that did not fix it. I've also tried to load the alienwarefx controller but nothing seems to happen.

Another thing, although minor, is a red mark on the lid in the shape of a L right above the hdmi out slot when the lid is closed. Is this normal? Seems to be etched inside the surface coat.

did you try uninstalling, then reinstalling Command Center? As to the red mark I don't think that is normal. :(

Hello, brayanr99, have you installed Command Center along with the OSD (On Screen Display) application?
If not, download them from Dell's support site.

I too am having issues with the newest CC, installed it, everytime I would restart I would get a error msg for alienfx and the computer would keep installing a usb device.... It also seems to of taken out my killer network manager.

So, I rolled back to a restore point, system was still kinda buggy, so I fired up CC, then it updated it self and all seems to work now... strange.

    Hello,
Can anyone tell me why the color red is missing from my macro key (1) profile? It is available for the other 2 macro key profiles, as well as all other zones. Seems rather odd.

After installing the latest Command Center nothing works. Any theme I try to activate doesn't turn on and the lights are stuck at the previous setting. First I updated the original CC, then I uninstalled/reinstalled... nothing. Anyone have a fix for this?

    Thanks.

EDIT: I had to shut down my machine and reboot. Everything works now.

I need some help desperately. I've tried sorting the situation out myself, but all in vain. My AlienFX wont work and shows the following error.
System.IO.FileNotFoundException: The specified module could not be found. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x8007007E)
    at System.Management.ThreadDispatch.Start()
    at System.Management.ManagementScope.Initialize()

I've tried uninstalling AlienFX and even downloading the new one, but the installation gets stuck and shows the same error. I tried Alienrespawn in hopes to revert my laptop to an ealier date, but it disappears as soon as i see the little alien logo. It wont start up either. Any help would be greatly appreciated..

I already tried uninstalling and reinstalling the latest version of alienfx, but it froze during the final phase, giving me the above mentioned error. I couldnt even find the thermal controls folder. All i can see is the tutorial folder within the AlienFX folder. And yes, i made sure i did the show hidden files. I dont understand what the issue could be..

Did you follow the steps correctly, or was it before you saw the article?

Additionally, attempt a full power drain:

    • remove the power cord and system battery.
    • unplug the CMOS coincell battery
    • press the power button for ~30 seconds
    • reassemble and see if that fixes it.

I followed the steps correctly. Except for a few things that i just cannot seem to find. Like the thermal folders or something that the article mentions. I dont have any of those on my laptop. I'm trying to reinstall it again right now..fingers crossed.. :(

Did you reboot your system after uninstalling the previous version?
    How about power drain?

Yes i rebooted it, since the Command centre installation window just freezes on me. I dont really know how to do a power drain im afraid. I dont really have a set of tools with me to open up the back panel right now. And ive never really disconnected the battery. I'm pretty naive when it comes to the technical aspects of it i guess..

It seems like my problem just got alot more complicated. Tried to conact supportis various ways, but it seems lie my service tag is not recognised. Feeling pretty helpless right now. I dont getwhy the new software for command entre wont install, and neither will the Alien respawn work. There has to be something that i can do. I suppose ill just haveto wait till morning to call dell directly.. :(
