Aside from the X51 R3 being displayed (which has a max validated GPU of a GTX 960), what are the implications of this? As it stands, the only current selling Alienwares that are capable of Oculus are
    • Alienware 18 (Dual GTX 970m or Dual GTX 980m)
    • Area 51 R2 (starting from GTX 970)
    • Graphics Amplifier capable computers, sans the AW13 (startiing from GTX 970 / R9 290).
This could just be a marketing ploy, or it could mean something deeper.
(If you're thinking about dual GTX 980s in the 18, don't until there's confirmation of yes or no.)

Because the other models have Optimus (bad for VR due to latency) and Oculus' recommended spec is desktop 970/290

I've been playing with DK2 since several months by now with my M18X-R2 and it works like a charm so with SLI GTX 980M I don't see any problem with the new model. :D

Does the X51 R3 have dual 6-pin connectors or at least an 8-pin connector for GPUs though?

All X51's have dual 6-pin connectors, so an adapter to 8 pin should be enough to connect a Nano or any GPU that requires a 8-pin connector to an X51.

In that case, the Fury Nano would be perfect for the X51 R3 assuming the 330w adapter can handle everything. I think it's just enough to run everything properly.

    • Alienware 18 (Dual GTX 970m or Dual GTX 980m

hmm.. seems cheaper for me to just buy one of the remade machines then upgrade my 18.

Or sell your 18 and get the P870DM which is a proper machine!

I believe a 120Hz R4 will be compatible, due to the signal going directly thru the dedicated GPU (no Optimus). With an OCd 3940XM & 980M I hope it'll be enough. According to 3DMark firestrike score, above ~9200 is Oculus recommended.

I think so, it is basically like connecting a desktop tower to a display screen. But does the signal go thru the iGPU?

Seems like it connects directly to the GPU in the GA. That's what a few people have mentioned. If anyone with a GA gets their hands on the official oculus in the coming month, it would be very helpful to know your result.

Even optimus systems can run oculus. There might be a slight signal delay but it does work well. I know plenty of devs that used their laptops while developing with the DK2.

What about the blank screen I keep hearing about? An hdmi issue with the igpu isn't it? It's been mentioned a few times that it's a real issue if you are on driver 0.7 or later and have Optimus (with no bypass option)
