Hi,
Just got my Alienware 17 R4 delivered 2 days ago. Haven't really played much games yet ( only cs:go and some low visual games) but for some reason every time i right click on the desktop screen there is a few seconds delay(more like a lag spike) before the refresh window pops open. Doesn't matter if i'm playing a game, streaming or doing nothing with it. Its fairly annoying like.
Wondering if anyone else has encountered this before and if yes then how do i fix it. My old system which had way low specs than this( fourth generation intel i7-acer) never did that.
PC SPECS:
Intel® Core™ i7-7700HQ
NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 1060 with 6GB GDDR5
8GB DDR4 at 2400MHz (1x8GB)
128GB M.2 SATA 6Gb/s SSD (Boot) + 1TB 7200RPM SATA 6Gb/s (Storage)

Always good to check the Device manager to make sure everything is installed as needed.
You can also use Throttlestop to see the CPU activity, its possible your sitting at 800Mhz while idle -
If the laptop has optimus it could be this.

So all in all, theres no solution to this problem. We pay more than 2000 dollars and this is what we get.
You reckon i'll get away with it if i set my default gpu to nvidia (regardless of what program i use).
Any draw back to that beside battery consumption???
Thanks.. -
2 drives are available to download and install.
1.Chipset
2.new bios (released on 4th dec)
Question: Should i update bios????
Thanks. -
If your missing chipset drivers that would certainly be a red flag
I would wait on bios, some people have bricked their laptop and they are releasing a new bios to patch the Intel vulnerability I think next month. -
sound.
Is the intel vulnerability patch for stutter/lag during gaming? -
This has been a more recent problem with Windows and anyone that uses switchable graphics, it isn't an Alienware exclusive problem and Alienware won't be fixing it as it has nothing to do with the hardware. There are temporary solutions out there like rolling Windows back which people are using to get rid of it. If I remember correctly Intel is aware of it and working on a fix.
No , the Intel patch is not going to fix stuttering or lag if you have any. The fix was a security fix only, it did not affect performance.
Do you want to plug the security hole? If so then apply the newer bios, there are no performance changes that came with this bios. Be aware ANY bios update can have unforeseen consequences such as bricking a machine, but they are rare and don't happen often. Make sure you follow the directions such as turning off overclocking before you attempt it , if you decide to do it.Hass. likes this. -
I only got my laptop like 4 days ago so even IF it doesn't start after bios update, wont that be covered by warranty. Surely alienware wont abandon some1 who ****s his computer while installing the latest bios?or will they.
Thanks.
I've made nvidia my default Gpu so like its pretty much running in the background all the time. Thats gotten rid of the stutter but thats only a temporary solution.
Thanks for the help. -
Absolutely it's covered under warranty if it bricks during a bios update but it's still a PITA to deal with and no one wants to see their laptop be ripped apart for a motherboard swap or have to send it in for depot service.

1) What build of Windows are you running? type winver in an elevated command prompt to see the version
2) Did you disable all the nasty stuff of Windows 10 using O&O ShutUp10 ? O&O ShutUp10 - Do not use Windows 10 without it!
3) Are both your Intel and nVIDIA Drivers up to date?
These are the latest ones:
Intel® Graphics Driver for Windows® 10, 64-bit * [15.60] Version: 15.60.01.4877 (Latest 12/7/2017)
nVIDIA GeForce Driver v388.59
Use Display Driver Uninstaller to properly remove the previous drivers and all their remnants
4) What Antivirus do you use?
-
using Mcafee total protection atm.
I'll check all my drivers and the points you stated above once more when i get back home.
I'll keep you updated.
Thanks.Last edited: Dec 14, 2017 -
1.
2. Nope haven't disabled anything yet. Does it make a big difference on performance?
3. Yes both drivers are upto date. This is the only update thats popping up. Should i update??
4. I've got mcafee.
Any ideas?? the lag seems to disappear when the laptop is running on nvidia. Once i made nvidia my preferred GPU the lag has decreased significantly. -
Hi @Hass. for your suttering problem I suggest do a clean install.. It's abit tasking to setup but it is worth it. Follow Phoenix guide as it is the best: http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads/nbr-windows-10-clean-installation-guide.781178/ I too had experience the spike lag problem when you refresh and what solved my problem was a clean install, updating intel latest graphic driver and also using nvidia driver 388.00. Hope this helps.

I only recently got my laptop and its still under warranty. I'd say its safer to ring dell and ask them to fix it instead of me going around and ****ing up something else.
Thanks for your help though. -
It's up to you. But running a laptop with windows 10 and no attempt of protection against Micro$hit is a real pain. Good luck with dell. ^_^
-
I made nvidia my default GPU and that seems to have stopped the stutter. Like yeh it does drain my battery a lot faster but its only a temp solution until dell fixes it.

can you try this Intel Driver and see if it helps fix the issue:
Intel® Graphics Driver for Windows® 10, 64-bit * [15.60] Version: 15.60.01.4877 (Latest 12/7/2017)
I recommend you uninstall the previous Intel Driver using Display Driver Uninstaller in Safe Mode then reboot and install the new one -
Except it isn't a Dell issue....it isn't even a hardware issue. It's a known issue with Intel right now and the switchable graphics so there is nothing to "fix" on Dell's end.0lok likes this.

Exactly this.. ^_^
Alienware 17 R4 lags every time i refresh.
