I know it's two years later, and I shouldn't have bought it if I read the reviews. But I "had to have it", and now I have it. Now I don't like it, but since I already bought it, I'm trying to make the best of it.

I have had similar problems with this beast. I bought it on Ebay, so I am not sure if the problems are "standard" or from a sneaky seller.

I get really bad crackling in the audio for the first half hour until it "warms up", often the audio cuts out completely, until I Mute/Un-Mute a couple times. The crackling sounds like a really old Vinyl record that has been mis-treated.

Also, there is no Bass at all from the headphone jacks or any of those four jacks. Anyone know a solution to these problems? Would USB provide bass? Is there a good adaptor for that (from USB to Green-and-black outputs).

Do you know what driver runs the Powerless CD player. I don't think mine works, so maybe I need to install something else.

I long beyond warranty, and I don't think I'll even try calling for help. I don't need my speakers replaced.

you can just get a PCMCIA sound card... have the same notebook.

I use my Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS.... PCMCIA.

I got if for $40 from a dude off of Craigslist. :)

If you are experiencing those sound issues, try to go into the Realtek Sound Manager and:
Set the Environment option to Carpeted Hallway. And if you want even more quality, set the Equalizer to Soft (as in Soft Rock)

Oh good advice thanks. I'll try those sound settings tonight. In the meantime, I've ordered a $1 USB audio output dongle, because my USB headphones work just fine.

Any idea where to find the driver for the CD player that plays without power-up? And the driver for the 5-in-1 card reader? I got a totally wiped laptop when I bought online, so I had to find all the drivers from Alien's website. Still missing those 2 though.

By the way, the USB audio adapter thing worked perfectly.
