Just a thought, with CEBIT on from the 4th to the 6th March, could this be the time they release the M17x?

I noticed with a quick google back in 2006 they were @ CEBIT when they launched a Laptop range.

No idea if they are even at CEBIT this year, so this could be a short thread lol.

But, if they are there - maybe?

i think its just component shortage..... battery's/smart bays/FXkeyboards new Penryn cpus etc that are holding them back.

they prob earn biger margins on the single gfx card notebooks also so thats prob why they selling the m15x like hotcakes first.

be nice if they showed off the mXXx range in different colors but.... black or silver alien ware just aint right this is no Apple airs!! we need orange green and blue and red pronto!
What els would they announce about the m17x ??

Thing is, people have been quoting (from AW staff) that it is due - end of Feb, early March.

Obviously that could be total hearsay and all - that's what made me think of CEBIT

Just looked on the CeBIT website at a list of exhibitors and low and behold ALIENWARE (Hamburg office) is there (Hall 21, Stand A40). Fingers crossed, I reckon it could be released on the 7th of March.

You never know :) - maybe they removed the M17x information on their website because they want to "Re-launch" it at CEBIT like they did at CES.

My money is ready from tomorrow, so here's to hoping it is out in the next 2 weeks :D.

Black would be nice if it was not shiny like the silver Ripley, or it will be fully covered of your finger prints.

I wouldn't put much stock into what people hear from staff. Last month people heard "from staff" that the black skullcap would be out end of january, early february. Same with the m17x. It'll be out when it's out I guess.

Meh, I'll just make sure that I always have some cloth to wipe it down. And I won't let anyone else touch my baby. Ever. EVER.

Black m17x would be nice. If the m15x comes out in black Ripley before the m17x does, though, I probably wouldn't be able to resist.

They could also be showing off their new ALX computer that they failed to really push at CES (even though they had advertised it on their website with the m15x).

I highly doubt Alienware are waiting for Quads for the M17x.

They aren't even going to be out before September at the earliest. Intel confirmed the Montevina CPU's pricing which didn't include the quad. The Montevina CPU's are going to be announced in June and probably not in a notebook for a month or so after that, so the quad will be released even later than that (possibly not even til early next year).

I'm sure Alienware haven't designed the M17x and hyped it all up just for the sake of it. They will put it on the market at the earliest point that makes sense, so they can make profits from it. Waiting for the quads not only means that their invested money is doing nothing, but also they would have no 17" notebook that can compete against the strong market competitors, which will in turn lead to competitors growing and Alienware weakening.

That will not happen, it makes no sense.

I'm sure Alienware will have a new notebook for Montevina or the M1*'s will have a complete overhaul.

I don't necessarily disagree with a number of your points but it seems awfully odd that the m17x has now quietly but totally disappeared from the Alienware website. Its also odd that Dell is now advertising directly on its website for the m15x. Previously, other than providing a link to the Alienware website, Dell did not push Alienware products on their website. The line between Dell and Alienware that had still been there in some form since Dell's purchase of Alienware has become more blurred recently. I don't think its beyond the scope of possibility that Dell/Alienware has decided: (1) To push the m15x as the "most powerful 15" notebook avialable"; (2) push the m1730 as the 17 inch 8800m SLI option to compete with the Sager/Clevo resellers; and (3) hold the m17x back for Montevenia and/or mobile Quads so that it can be first to the market (hopefully) and then be touted as the most advanced 17" laptop available while others are working on new motherboards, etc.

Thats a fair enough comment, but - I'm sure Dell wouldn't want Alienware losing market value because they do not have a 17" laptop that can compete with the market.

Even if Dell have a laptop which is in direct competition, Alienware offers something different (otherwise they wouldn't be around today).

I can't see that Alienware can gain enough capital from the M9750 until Montevina comes along (unless it has a CPU / GPU upgrade), it will surely just knock god knows how much off the value of Alienware as a brand and surely something Dell would not want. Even with the M9750 upgraded, after announcing the M17x, people are probably more reluctant to purchase it.

Fact is, Alienware is a boutique company. Even though the M1730 can grab customers looking for a SLI setup, they are still losing more customers as a whole because the M17x would fill another void (rather than customers purchasing elsewhere).

For example, if the M17x doesn't come out, it doesn't mean I'll go and purchase an M1730 - I'll more than likely go elsewhere (Rock etc). So the way I see it is Alienware + Dell need the M17x, the more they can offer - the more they will gain.

Also, I have noticed is that the M1730 doesn't have the X9000. Are they keeping it back for release with the M17x to tout it as a superior laptop for now?, who knows.

The m17x could become the new mAlx. Would make sense it terms of waiting for quads...

I think it's still coming though. Just saying, they could always decide to put it on hold.

I can't Alienware being at CeBIT just to announce a new colour scheme for the M15x :). If they don't have the M17x with them, surely a lot of people are going to be raising their eyebrows.

Maybe Alienware have removed the information on their site because they have added some new features that wasn't included on that preview page, or maybe they just want to re-release it with a bigger bang :).

    Positive thinking people! :D

Just a coincidence that it is running around the same time as the forcasted release date of the M17x that is Q1 - 08.

And also don't forget that they lowered the base price of the M9750 a week or so ago, leading to the conclusion that the m17x will be released in the near future as AW tries to sell some of its leftover inventory for the M9750.

Fair enough...but didn't we hear that a month ago when it was initially lowered to $1699? I think there were even reports her from NBR posters about discussions with Alienware reps that the m9750 was going to be discontinued. We're all trying to read tea leaves here and no ones's "guesstimate" is any better than someone else's but it just strikes me as strange that there is presently no reference whatsoever to the m17x on Alienware's page, including that anyone new to the site can no longer sign-up for the email notice of the release of the m17x. With that said, for the sake of everyone who has been patiently waiting 100 days now since the "launch event" back on 11/19, I hope my current hunch is wrong. Oh, and for what its worth, 34 more days left in Q1 2008.

Another "guess" ;) as to why they removed the information on the M17x. Maybe they thought having that information on their website was having a detrimental effect on the sales of the M9750 because potential M9750 customers (not us on here) were spotting it and holding off buying "old" tech.

Then they can shift more M9750's before the M17x suddenly hits (which will ofc be within 2 weeks  )

Yeah, I guess that's possible...but regardless of whether there is a tease page for the m17x on the website or not, the m9750 remains "old tech" compared to the rest of the 17 inch laptops it competes with from Dell, Sager/Clevo, etc. or the m15x for that matter. If AW was following that line of thinking, it would seem to make more sense if they took the m17x down to try to get more people who were waiting for the m17x to give in and buy the m15x.

True :), - maybe they are just fed up with people (like me :)) asking them about the M17x, so they thought to hell with it and removed everything as if it never existed :D.

Less questions, more M15x sales lol.

I have a great desktop, that's why I wanted the m15x because it provided that void I needed because I need something I can carry which was lighter than a brick.

This thing encroaches in semi brick territory

Yea I know it does sound silly, but there are a few advantages. I have the M9750 and I take it back and forth from school around 3 / 5 days a week. I couldn't do that well with a desktop. I sacrificed power for necessary mobility.

unless laptops move into the 30lbs+ range they'll still be more mobile than desktops. you can move a performance notebook around the house, kinda hard to do that with a gaming desktop. and many gaming notebooks don't fit in standard cases so you can put them in a backpack and carry them on your back...and i doubt there is any human whose back muscles can't handle 12lbs....

    For me, I don't want a desktop.

I had a watercooled FX-60, crossfired X1900, 4x Raptors Raid-0 monster of a system which I built a couple of years back - but recently stripped it and sold it on.

I want a desktop replacement; I can go and plug it into my 46" 1080p LCD, take it around friends, I also fix a lot of PC's, so if I have a mobile PC that would beneficial. Also my dad loves playing Dawn of War, so I can pop around there and give him a good beating at that if I have a laptop.

Why go for a "brick" laptop?, solely because - it suits my needs! I'm not going to be carrying it daily, just unplugging it from one power socket to another now and then :).

That makes sense Flam3h.. but of course you already knew that ;)

Well in my case I'm actually thinking of getting the m15x but not too sure.. Thing is I'll be comin for college in Aug sometime and before that I don't really know what my routine will be like or how much I really would need a laptop in class or for work.. I suppose I'll put my order in around Sept after I get into my daily sched and know whether or not I'll have to lug it to class..
So I guess I'm in for a heck of a long wait - You guys have it goooood !!!! :(

Ah, decisions, decisions eh, Wraithers! hi by the way.
I know you're parents are paying for your new machine and you probably don't have an unending budget lol but, have you considered the benefits of having a 17" notebook, M17X say, it would be ok for college etc. ok maybe a little heavier but, it will be your "home" pc too and able to play games, atudy or watch blue-ray movies. sort of a media centre?

No one knows, I expect around 10% or so on top of the M1730's pricing - probably starting at £1500+ if it's only offered 8800m GTX's, but depends completely on the GPU's offered.

    That's my guess anyway.

They sell stuff on Ebay. Kinda low on offerings right now though, just some old laptops. They usually carry desktops too though.

    Noooooooooo...

Just received an E-mail from Dell with a 10% off voucher included.

I could now go and pick up a M1730 with SLI 8800GTX and T9300 for £1619 delivered. Argh.

I really want a X9000, but a M17x with an X9000 is going to cost around £2400+. What to do

Well, Alienware just sent out an "Alienware Insider" email that featured only the m15x. That would seem to dim any chance the m17x being released before March 1.
