Hey all, anybody have any info on Black Friday deals coming up in the next few weeks? I've been waiting patiently for them to release the Alienware 17 with the new GTX 1080 but nothing yet...If they don't release it soon I might have to jump on another brand with the GTX 1080 if they have a good deal...I'm a Alienware user and stick by there products and have $3,000 ready for a new system but concerned there new chip won't be out by Black Friday...I've chatted with a few of there reps but they don't know either...

They're supposedly going to launch the GTX 1080 version the 16th of this month, from all the articles I've seen.

Personally I would be holding off....the new models are a hot mess of thermal shutdowns and light bleeds right now. It is so bad that they have had to address the problem on Reddit and social media. The new designs are not providing adequate coverage for the CPU and the cores are all over the place and the paste they are using is garbage to say the least. The light bleed issues are rampant and even after replacements people are reporting non stop issues.

Personally I would hold off for the next iteration of this lineup, but if you can't or want to risk it the made an announcement that the 1080 will be available on the 21st.

I did read about those issues but thought the article said Dell was providing a BIOS fix for those issues...But yea if the issues are rampant then I might hold off...

It's a physical problem, AW aren't evenly applying pressure to the CPU heatplate, using poor paste and technique, resulting in overall high temps + uneven CPU core temperatures:

Warning: Some i7-6820HKs and i7-6700HQ have Uneven Core Temps due to Uneven Heatsink

I didn't want to move to another brand but the other one I'm looking at is from Xotic called Sager NP9873 or Clevo P870DM3
That one there has the QHD 120hz (2560 x 1440) that I also wanted on the system, any thoughts on that system?

companies always release bios fixes to try and "fix" physical issues. You could try and get something like M17x R4 for really cheap. I find older laptops with upgrades works for me.

MSI laptops seem to be getting good reviews and have good hardware and cooling solutions, maybe check them out for deals? I too would have liked to stick with AW.

I've looked at the MSI and the Clevo models off of Xotic but after configuring it came way over $3,000 and even though I have that to spend Alienware just seems like a better deal right now...There 17'' model is around $2,000 but with an 1070 and I really really want the 1080 version...I guess I can just wait until the 1080 is released and hope a good price is available or I can just purchase my last year of warranty for $150 off there site and use this until next year...Current warranty runs out on December 13th

Whoa. I was just going to take advantage of all the huge instant savings and go for the 1070 but I will wait in the US for this version to arrive and then consider placing my order. I literally stopped talking to a rep right now.

I tried configuring a model based on your UK site and everytime I selected the GTX 1080 chip it came back with a compatibility error with regards to the only CPU offered 6700

As others have stated, AW is not the one to get at this time due to the physical issue with the heatsink and CPU. I would wait until they have fixed this, especially if you're spending $3k+ on one. Clevo or Sager is solid at this time, but that may change in the future also.

BGA is what it is. An un-upgradable machine. If upgrading is important, I would look at other options aside from AW. Cheers man.

Be careful with the MSI. I got a GT72VR 6RE and it was awful. Performance when it was not blue screening was worse than that of the AW. It lasted all of 12 hours before I sent it back.

This season the GT62VR and GT73VR are the best MSI choices...

But, the GT72VR shouldn't have had any problems, and most reports in the GT72VR thread are positive, sorry you got a bad one. :)
