Well I got my laptop back today, and it came back in worse condition. They did not fix my screen, or my keyboard, the laptop has cosmetic damage chocolate on the bottom vent. I spoke to a dell rep today she said that she will fill out a farm to try, and get my laptop replaced, and if that gets denied that I have to send it out to depot. I really don't want another depot experience.

So on Sunday I called tech support because the optical drive in my son's M15X stopped accepting discs. The tech said a new drive was needed and will be replaced under warranty. He said the company they contract to do the installation will call by Thursday at the soonest to set up an appointment. I remarked that I had the NBD warranty, he said that was the best he could do. Does this make sense to you, I'm kind of upset right now?

I just realized that you can extend your warranty after the first one got expired. So here is my question :
can you add the warranty extension after your laptop is broken ? -
Tsunade_Hime such bacon. wow
Broken as in physically damaged? You can buy CC after your base warranty is expired, but buying Complete Care after you've physically damaged your notebook constitutes fraud.

My M11X R1 fan was making a loud noise. (scraping with something) I called them up and told them about it. They send a new motherboard. The technician installed it in 20 minutes and I started testing it. Everything was perfect and he left. From the day I called to the installation it took about 5 days. Cant be any happier.

I have a few questions about the Advanced Warranty before i order the M14x.
1) How many years would you recommend getting.
2) If i somehow managed to destroy it would it be replaced with a brand new or used(refurbished).
3) When shipping it back to dell would i pay the shipping?
4) If say the gpu goes out, do they send someone to my house to fix it?
5) Is there a drawback or is the m14x acually fully covered no matter what? And how many times do they replace the laptop if the next one happens to die?
HEY I'd rather be safe then sorry. -

You'll need the system's service tag and Express service code (from the sticker on the bottom of the laptop) and concerning the previous owner, only his name and zip code are required the rest is optional (email, phone, full address etc.)
Here's the form you'll have to fill to transfer ownership and warranty:
Ownership-Tag Transfer | Dell -
7 month old or so m17x r3
specs
i7-2720qm
8gbram
6990m
dual 120gb ssd's raid 0
1920x1080p screen
We have the best warrenty we could buy for compete care and accidental.
The laptop was ran over its 100% destroyed, Will they replace it with a new laptop or a refurb??? its a 2500$+ laptop. -
SlickDude80 Notebook Prophet
your laptop got run over? by a car?
if they honor the warranty, you will get a refurb -
I know that dell will honor the warrenty, It was on the back opf the truck and fell off. Anyway dell told me That I would get a new one not a refurb what truth is there to this.
-
SlickDude80 Notebook Prophet
i believe its refurb parts for anything older than 3 months...but if they are telling you new, then i hope the tech knows what he is talking about
-
Im not a big fan of how dells warrentys work. 500$ warrenty and you get refurb parts.

Hi I was wondering if my alienware m14x is not working and my warranty is still on, if i wait until the m14x R2s to come out and ask for a replacement will i get a new r2?
-
I believe the rule is if you have 3 service calls for the same issue, you can ask for a replacement, but you'll get one of equal or superior value.
There's no way to tell if they'd give you an R2. If the R1's are fully discontinued, then they would. -
If the R1 is discontinued, they have no refurbished models left, and it's officially under the "lemon law" (I think thats the 3 calls Voodoo said), then they have to give you a model of equal or greater value. I think its more price than performance. So if you had a $1500 R1 they'd have to give you a $1500 R2. I think some guy just had his m15x replaced with an m14x a few weeks ago right?
Note that this will most likely only happen a couple years after the R1 has been discontinued. They probably a lot of refurbs in stock. I would think it would be more likely for someone to get an R3 in a couple years than to get an R2 replacement -
these guys generally keep quite large stock of spare parts both brand new and refurbed. So chances of you getting a r2 as replacement is rare as tehy will simply keep on replacing the damaged part with new part until their stocks run empty. Its only then that you would be eligible for a replacement.
-
I agree with Gearsguy.
You're more likely to get an R3 than an R2 when it comes to replacements because by the time the R3 is releases, R1 stocks (including refurbs) could be all gone. -
I recently stripped some screws and replaced them with non-Dell screws. If I told this to Dell, could it void my warranty?

So one of the GPUs on my M18x is overheating (the 6970M) and still have a few months of warranty left
Anyone dealt with GPU replacement through warranties before? Are they going to ship me one to install, or will a tech come in to do it? Or will I have to ship it back?
Also, since I had a 6970M, and those were discontinued a while back, would I be getting a 6990M or something else? -
Bought this m17xr3 in 08/11
It has been to depo 2 times and a tech has fixed it at my house 4 times. Lovely Ehh?
I am sick of it so now they approved a exchange.
They told me I will have to wait till tuesday to know what I am going to get as a replacment.
Here ar emy current specs.
i7-2720
6990m
raid 0 x2 320gb hdds
1920x1080 screen
8gb ram
If you all had to make a guess what do you think they will give me? -
I would hope that they will give you an R4. Waiting till Tuesday suggests that the they may give you an Ivy Bridge system.
My guess would be i7 3720QM and 7970m with 1080p in which case you are lucky -
I was wondering how much longer should I wait while using my dead set of 6970s. Luckily I've been busy and have only required semi-serious cpu power for MATLAB. But now that will have more free time in the next few months to do some serious gaming I will be able to actually use my gpu's and not sit on the igpu for months on end.
I assume that dell has a low stock of 580m and 6970m as of right now. If I call today they would most likely replace my 6970s with 6990s that are just about to be phased out. How much longer should I wait so that I might have the ability to get a set of 7970s. I would assume that dell might replace my 6970s with the 675m's which are still an upgrade but not as much as the 7970s. I've already had an LCD swap, Motherboard swap and 6970s swap once already. My first issue related to not being able to control the brightness of my screen and this current issue is simply dead gpus that artifact/crash/etc. I waited an entire month after dell dropped the 6970s from their website before calling in to try to get 6990s but I still ended up with 6970s. I assume that the worst case scenario would involve myself getting 6990s/675's which is still an upgrade. Mind you this laptop was purchased nearly a year ago when my config was the absolute best you could get. Not that it matters in this day in age as things get outdone within months. -
Whatever you get, it will be everything you deserve or more because Dell/Alienware treats their customers right. Expecting (or demanding) more than what you had to begin with is unrealistic. As long as they have a refurb systems (or refurb parts) with the same specs available, that's probably what one should expect to receive in the event that parts or system replacement is necessary.

hello i changed ram cpu and repaste my gpu 8 months ago and now after 8 months later i got gpu problem and dell will send technician to replace gpu and i got question because i doesnt got oryginal cpu and memory right now it will void my warranty? also do i need put back fabric tim pads on gpu?
-
put the originals back on, chances dell tech won't recognize them, but I wouldn't take those chances...
-
But from what i read change cpu / memory wont void my warranty anyway. Besides i doesnt have them right now
-
change them won't void if they are original dell supplied parts (what I confirmed from dell rep) but some people say otherwise, chose at your own will

"No. You will not void your warranty if you open the case and repaste. You are free to do whatever you want with your system. Your money. Your system. Enjoy it. Tweak it. Play with it. Tear it down to your heart's content.
The only thing that will void your warranty is if you damage any of the components performing ANY activity. That would include not grounding yourself and shorting something (hard for us to prove), screwdriver slip that damages something, Furmark madness for an hour (also hard to prove), etc. Even in cases where you have damaged the system, we can bring it in to the depot, for a fee, repair it and reinstate your warranty.
If a tech ever tells you differently, feel free to point them to this post and shoot me a PM with their Rep ID, which they are required to provide upon request. I'll point them to the appropriate internal documentation." -

^ Listen to the post above mine. Bill is awesome.
(The Rev beat me to the post.
)
Though, for future reference, as long as you are under warranty I wouldn't sell/get rid of stock components.
In your case, the tech shouldn't be concerned with the CPU or RAM anyway. If he gives you any trouble, you know what to do. -
I had a technician come the other day to replace my motherboard, video cards, and hard drive in my M17X R1. However after the install it was determined that my motherboard was dead on arrival. I was advised by the Dell technical support that I have to now send my computer into their depot as my only repair option. Does anyone know if I have to send in the computer to the depot as I was told by tech support? I would much rather have them send out another technician with parts since it is much faster.
My warranty on the dell tech support site is labeled as "Next Business Day Support" if that helps. -
Hello forum!
if my m14x is completely ruined because it fell into a pool...
will dell give me a new m14x?? -
Plus also, if you are not covered for any sort of accidental damage, I'd strip that thing down and get it in an airing cupboard asap. It's unlikely you'll get it working just from drying it out, but you will be able to salvage many of the parts. Whatever you do, *don't* try and power it up. -
I'm thinking of buy a m17x, but have a question about the warranty.
I'm going to buy the 1 year accidental and say 1 year from now it goes out. Could I buy more warranty for another year and is there a time limit for that?
If I decide not buy warranty and say 6 months after the 1 year warranty is up and something breaks on the laptop could I buy warranty than? They don't know if it's broke or not and would like to save $$ since it's expensive. Is there a time limit to say it's broke if they let me do that?
Thanks for any help! -
katalin_2003 NBR Spectre Super Moderator
The limit is five years from the day it shipped.
You can buy more warranty after the initial one expired but it will cost more.
-
I can't decide if I should buy the two or three year advanced warranty. If I upgrade in two years and still have a year left, can I transfer that extra year to my new system? I wouldn't think you can, but I'd like to make sure first.
Also, are there still insane extension prices on the warranty if you extend while still covered? I've only seen people talk about extending after their warranty is already up. If the pricing is reasonable while still under warranty, I'll definitely go with the two year. -
Extension pricing is unreasonable and punitive. Go with three or four years at purchase if you can swing it. It's worth every dime and reasonably priced on a new system.

I'm looking to buy a 17x R4 in november
Will I void warranty if I
-Repaste/remove fan or heatsink
-Change MXM graphics
-Disassembly of machine (ram, HDD change, maybe wireless card)
-Lap (polish) the contact surface of heatsink to cpu/gpu
-Bricked by flashing an unlocked BIOS -
katalin_2003 NBR Spectre Super Moderator
If you install other parts than what Dell approved and they become the cause of a malfunction that will not be covered. Even in this situation warranty is not void, you'll have to cover the expense of repairs and your system will continue to be covered by Dell.
Same goes for bricking your system with an unofficial BIOS/firmware.
If you want to lap your heatsinks, why not buy a second set and lap those (as usual, do it at your own risk). This is what i did.
If you're planning on doing some upgrades to your system (aftermarket CPU, RAM, storage etc.), keep the stock parts in case you'll have to return the system. You don't want to send your precious, more expensive parts
Cheers -
Need to find a set on eBay that ships to asia :|
Just a question, is it possible just to remove the BIOS battery and reset the BIOS from there if I bricked the mobo? -
-
Pretty much as the title asks. I plan on ordering my M18x (specs in sig) from HIDEvolution with 4 year Advanced warranty. However, I remember reading somewhere that the accidental damage protection (which as far as I can tell is the only difference between the basic and advanced warranties) cannot be transferred across countries like the basic warranty can. Is this true?
-
You will need to contact Dell to find out about that. You would need to contact them to do the transfer anyhow. If there is a limitation, I would suppose it might have something to do with what warranty (if any) they offer in the country you wish to transfer to. It would make perfect sense that they would not permit it if there is a difference in cost for the warranty, or Dell does not sell or service your product in that country, which would limit coverage to in-depot repairs only. There could be some restrictions on shipping computer technology into some countries as well.
