I'm just wondering, anyone have an old Alienware laptop lying around and are willing to record a video of dropping it? It would be interesting to watch and see if it survives.

Bahaha, why would anyone want to do that. I'd buy it off them before having someone do that .. ;)

What a stupid idea, no offense but seriously! I don't see too many AW fans putting their hand up for this. I just tore my system down to the motherboard to connect a mSata cable that worked itself loose..so trust me I'm pretty sure if you dropped it from a decent height it wouldn't survive. Kind of reminds me of a destructive and curious child who smashes his matchbox car with a hammer expecting some divine intervention will keep it from breaking.
    Buddy... It's gonna break!

I have heard stories of people who have dropped them. Usually they survive pretty well, but the wieght and fact that the chassis is plastic (older models) the plastic cracks and it doesnt end up fitting together right.

The newer models being all metal will have a little better luck with a drop, but they still will get some damage due to the wieght. Connectors may unclip, lcds may crack, and metal bends.

    Best option, dont drop it.

I've got a better idea. Why don't you drop your old R1's, record the event, and get back to us.

This was posted on the Alienware Reddit a few days ago....he reports that while the cosmetic damage looks really bad the machine still functions perfectly.

If I find one for cheap again I most likely will... at one point I had 2 M17X R1's, one I bought straight from Dell and the other I bought for $250 off someone who thought it was broken, but the lcd cable just came loose. I ended up re-selling it, but dammit i should've done this instead lol.

Anyways, someone put up a video shooting their Alienware MALX haha: $7000 Laptop VS $7000 Pistol - YouTube

We had a Panasonic tough book at the truck shop I worked in years ago, they claimed you could drive over it with a truck....we never tried.

That's also happens when you use it for a knee pad or a creeper. ;)

I have actually seen people at work do stupid stuff like that with a laptop to avoid getting their pants dirty.

I can picture it now...it's raining and a gentleman and a lady are out for a walk and they come upon a large puddle. The man being the gentleman that he is naturally takes his backpack off, open up the back and pulls out his laptop. He lays the laptop in the puddle creating the perfect stepping stone for his lady to step on and over the puddle. He then follows her, stepping on the lid and then across before reaching down and picking the soaking wet laptop back up and shaking it off. He places it back in his backpack and says...."It's ok, tech support can fix it "

Holy crap man! If I dropped my 17 I would probably have a heart attack. I baby this thing like there is no tomorrow. It goes from my desk, into the sleeve and into the carrying case and then back to the desk, that's it :p

I would be supremely pissed if I even scratched it.

i had a situation at uni where i was microwaving some food and had my m11x r2 on the microwave, with my headphones in watching something....then after i got my food, i forgot to take my headphones off and walked away, resulting in the m11x r2 dropping....it survived although from what i remember it was only the height of the microwave that it fell...but it was quite a rough pull. i got sooooo scared at that moment. thankfully still chugging away.

Yeah, I do this all the time...Only reason I like using the Logitech 930...Sounds not as good as the nicer prosumer ones, but wireless wins vs. constantly yanking at my machine as I move around.
