Okay..
There are several threads related to issues with M11x and many guys around here are wondering if this is common.
most notable issues observed in M11x in this forum are:
(will update based on confirmation)
-BSOD on OCing the CPU
-hinge issues
-some gap on the screen??
-Noisy fans
-Weird Fn key behaviors and issues with battery and GPU shifting options related to it.
-Dead pixels
-Backlight bleed
-Some argue the screen is too reflective (mostly argued by people who didnt buy this)
I guess most proportion of guys who got their piece and got everything worked out fine are busy rolling with it. And either people not yet decided to buy m11x or waiting for their order are hanging out here in this forum.![]()
This may suggest that maybe the issues are from minority (or otherwise)
Just to clarify any doubts on which majority really got troubles.. please post your real opinion on M11x.(only the owners )
If u got troubles and got it solved and glad with the current setting... u are still happy owner (right?) unless the dell customer-care really gave a hard time for you in that process.
-please post your (brief) experience with your M11x (pros and cons)
u can also mention if u OC ur laptop without any trouble.
So, are you a happy m11x owner or not?????
Confirmations: (only the issues)
1.creaky hinge/click sound -RAQemUP,darkamikaze
2.faulty keyboard-villosa(fixed)
3.BSOD on OCking -h0M3bReW3r
4.Screen issues-jsgiv(fixed)
5.uneven lighting on screen(rare.. )-LE25

The 2 things that bother me are my creaky hinge which only shows itself when I finish adjusting the screen angle and the reflective screen.
Overall though, the whole thing kicks . Gaming performance has been great for its tiny size and I have especially been loving the battery life I get out of this gaming machine when I am not gaming.
It helps that my coupons stacked to have it shipped $830 to me. If I paid more then $1000, I don't think I would be as impressed as I am. -
This high price tag adds up the concern in choosing m11x :| (not that high.. only when upgraded) -
I actually paid full price for mine. Around 1037 USD to something but all in all I am very happy with the purchase. No issues yet thank god. Running under OC mode played a ton of games and the thing barley heats up!
Again I would also like to say that I am loving the battery life of this thing on intel graphics. My Vaio Z on windows 7 never lasted this long.
-
Give me 2-3 weeks and I can give an good opinion. So far it seems promising, but Dell could be shipping me a $900 doorstop for all I know.
-
Because of the 10% off coupon at the time, I am regretting possibly not getting the Samsung 256 gb SSD.
I am waiting for them to come down in price but with the discount it would not have been bad for a SSD that has Trim support with everything all setup.
Yeah, forgot to mention I absolutely love the cooling on this thing. It really keeps the thing cool. I can live with a loud fan every now and then. -
Is it loud as all say?? i mean reaallly loud.. :|
Plus it seems alienfx is screwing with the cpu .. which triggers the fan even when cpu is idle. but no1 mentioned it was loud.
and disabling the app from startup resolved the fan issue.. -
When you get on the 335m, whenever the fan kicks on it is always at full speed. You won't notice this when gaming. But if you switch from the 335M to the Intel IGP, the computer still thinks you are using the 335m and whenever the fan kicks on it will always be on at full speed.
People noted to fix this, once you are back on the Intel IGP, just reset the computer and the computer will have the normal fan activity again.
I can understand how this would be annoying for some when just doing normal daily activity. But there were to be some bugs to be expected for a newly released laptop. -
hmm ..reasonable.
my vostro 1400 roars like a hovercraft .. nvidea card in this 1 sux.. hope this m11x doesnt get me to attention in my class (yes every1 stare at my laptop when its fan start) -
I'm loving my M11X so much, I've been spending every waking moment configuring/downloading/installing/testing apps and games ect. I installed Ultra Hal Assistant AI with speech recognition and it works great, I can just talk to my M11X to launch programs and games and its lots of fun tinkering with it. LOL.
I also installed my Amiga emulator AmiKit/AmigaForever/WinUAE/AmigaOS 3.9 and its so fast ! I guess I've got the fastest UltraPortable Amiga emulation in the Universe. I am just so happy with my purchase and it rocks every PC game old and new that I've thrown at it so far other than the original StarCraft which had a problem with graphics but not a biggie though I'll just wait for StarCraft II to come out. : )
I've had it OC'd since day one without any problems. it stays cool enough that I'm not worried about anything going wrong with it. The fan is sometimes audible but not unbearable, and the build quality is perfect, solid and beautiful.
I Luv my M11X -
Another happy owner here
I bought my M11X only yesterday, but wow, am I surprised for its performance. I was worried (albeit like everyone else) of the 1.3GHZ SU7300, but this thing rocks! Tested some games, emulators and some older games like COD4 and the M11X doesn't even stutter for one second in gameplay.
I am extremely happy with my M11x - its my first Alienware product, and will certainly not be my last. -
Looks like the results speak for themselves. I recieved mine this morning and can't find a problem with it. No creaky hinge. Havn't OCed it yet, but that will come soon. Currently playing with it at work.
-
AAh! so u finally got it huh!
good luck with ur lady -
So - while I've had issues with mine (dust particles in screen, screen pop-out on replacement screen, squeaky hinge on second screen) - I must say I'm
"happy" with mine..
In short, looking past the issues (I'll get to that below), the machine far *EXCEEDS* what I expected of it from an overall performance level. To me - it's the perfect form factor / size - and it performs at a desktop-replacement level - with all the benefits of a "typical" netbook...
With regards to the issues - I must say that Dell/AW (and staff member Brian through these forums) - have really stepped up and proactively addressed any/all issues concerning the laptop. They've made it clear to me that a) they want this laptop to be a success and b) they want me to be extremely happy/satisfied with my purchase. To that end - it looks like they're going to simply do a full new exchange of my unit, considering the ongoing issues with this one - which is fine with me, as I believe they're truly trying to ensure I'm happy and that goes a long way IMHO. I've been in the IT industry for 20 years, I've seen the bad and good surrounding hardware issues - and it's certainly refreshing to see the level of service that has been provided to me at a personal level by Dell/AW staff to-date. Highly recommended and I'll continue to purchase and recommend Dell/AW systems going forward... -
Mine got here on Tuesday and after a few days of OS re-installations I finally got this imaged so I only really started using it yesterday.
I love mine, coming from a M1530 15.4" 1680x1050 i thought I might have issues with the lower res but it seems to work for me.
My unit came without any of the defect mentionned here. I habe the AUO panel which has decent viewing angles and is bright enough for how I use the system.
I haven't had a chance yet to strees test which I will do this weekend to confirm there's not issues with the internals.
I would honestly buy another one and recommend it to friends. Dell gave 7% EPP in Canada and the unit arrived on my door step 12 days after placing the order so I have nothing to complain about! -

Doesn't the M11x have an integrated low-power GPU for those kind of scenarios? -
Yep, with the integrated on it'll hardly ever make a sound.
-
the machine is great, cannot argue with it at all whatsoever, its simply perfect for class and school. No one knows what alienware is, i just tell them its dell

This thread + no news on 5870Ms make me want to get an M11x
You guys who have both R1 and M11x, how does the M11x display compare to R1? -
-
current results is about what I expected.
-
Garbage man comes on Monday im not even going to recycle this pos i want to pull the lever and compact this more than it already is and probably just use it for target practice after it warms up outside
-
-
Im inbetween, I love the laptop but I have two issues. My main concern before I bought it was the keyboard, since Ill be using it most for school ( writing papers, c++,and using maple for math). I received it on thursday and couldnt be happier with it
BUT
the lighting is uneven near the speakers. The left is dimmer than than the right, AND the sound from the speakers is uneven as well in the same way. The left is louder than the right. Though this is a minor issue, I just dont appreciate it out of a new laptop. So I guess I'll be calling Monday. -
I also cant seem to get rid of the dimming of the screen. Messed with the power save dimming feature and it still goes dim on its own. : (
-
Mine used to do the auto dim thing but all I did was create a new power plan with everything to the max and it never dims on it's own now.
-
im very happy.. only complaints are the fan going off when it doesn't need to issue after switching back to integrated.. and there's a clicking noise when i move my screen
besides that.. i love this thing
-
for months i wanteds to buy the Sony Vaio S...
but the alien logo and the customisable colors of varoius parts of the laptop sold me !!!!.
this laptop is quite small though, i do wish it was more like a 13", but its still a awesome new toy. especialy love the long battery life with the gpu on power saving mode -
-
-
have got it for 3 weeks now, OC'd from the very first minute, 0 issues till now(except for the Fn F2), quiete and stable, runs everything smoothly. it's becoming my main all purpose laptop. very happy with it.
-
I'm enjoying that I can browse the web with it on my lap while I wear shorts and not have it zap me to death like my inspiron 1720.
I think it's due to paint chipping.
-
Just got mine on Friday. Set the CPU to OC during set-up. No issues yet. I love the size, build quality, and style.
Played the first 2 levels of Crysis Warhead, very smooth and reasonably quiet.
Perfect blend of size and power for my needs
Wife even likes it so much I ordered her one yesterday . . . -

I did not take this picture....I copied it from the official review here and just added the red to highlight what looks like the speaker.Attached Files:

I'm a very happy owner, posting here for the first time because this site helped me make my buying decision with all the posting.. all 5000 of them! lol
I was considering to return it until i got it (because it didn't seem like a good deal).
My m11x doesn't seem to have any of the issues listed on the first post, except for some glitches with the gfx card switching after resuming sometimes, but they resolve after a reboot.
it runs cold.. i mean really cold, like i had to take it off my lap because it was so cold while i'm surfing, WTH?
and i don't know what all this talk about being loud. I have a dbA meter and measuring about 2ft away (distance from the fan to my ear) i'm getting readings below 28dbA. that's quiet.. so quiet i had to wait until my AC turned off because it completely over powered it.
the only thing i don't like is the limitations with the alienfx program. like the morph light effects don't seem very fluid and the white color option shows a mix of colors rather than white (RBG LED probably isn't properly diffused). i've considered looking into the SDK guide they've include, but i'm pretty busy (gaming of course).
the build is just awesome. no flaws or abnormalities anywhere on the outside except for a small .5mm dent on the bottom (probably from a screw driver). yea, picky i know; i work in QC so I can't help it -
if you really suspect there is a problem try to find a mixer software or audio program that will let you fade from left to right speaker. if there is something wrong with the speaker this will confirm it and it'll also help back you when you talk to dell -
I was worried in the start as I thought BSOD on OCing is frequent.. but it seems there's only 1 who got BSOD out of all those who voted.
There are like 4 guys who voted for "unhappy owners"
I know h0M3bReW3r have issues..
other 3 guys..k9hydr4, murkr n Sanmanatoo .care to post wht troubles u had??
I tried to search ur posts history.. to gather any topics u guys posted on ur m11x issues.. but coudnt get any details.(r u guys really owners? ) -
just contacted tech support @ alienware. they said its probably device that powers the left and right speakers/lighting. suggested a replacement part, I declined. I'll probably just get a refund then reorder or reorder sometime later.
The tech instructed me to remove the lid, I held up the laptop and the issue was the same. Also, the damn screen goes dim after 5 min or so. I changed the setting to "never" go dim, whether on battery or power adapter, and it still does it. it wont go back to its original setting unless I increase the brightness myself. -
My M11x is almost perfect. I haul it around, use it for HD video editing, gaming, as an HD media center for my HDTV, I use it at work for internet browsing, and lots more. It's completely stable, 24/7 overclocked both cpu and gpu, runs surprisingly cool, and the screen looks great. Mine doesn't creak, the fan isn't any louder than I thought it'd be, and the lights look less tacky in real life.
The only changes I would make would be to give it an internal OTA TV tuner, an option to disable the battery from charging since it's NOT covered by extended warranty by computer manufacturers anymore, and gigabit LAN. I transfer a lot of files, so I would FLOORED when I found out they put a cheap-arse 10/100 ethernet socket in there. -
-
Pretty happy so far (under 1wk ownership)
-
I have a slight click sound on the right hinge only when I begin to shut the laptop lid.
Is this a big problem? Can it get worse?
I can live with it if it's no big deal. -
Happy wappy! The OC-ing is fine, the 1.60 speed is a bug in CPU-Z according to Batboy. Love the machine, great for everything, esp for getting a few surprised looks in lecture halls
. Performance is awesome from a 2kg, 11 inch package, blew my old 15 inch Dell Studio right out of the water.
@kel= I get that click too, but after a bit of presssing, the click went away. So far so good, will let you know if something happens (touch on wood).
On a sidenote = LOTSY HAPPY OWNERS! We should make an m11x day. -
Yeah everything else on my system is perfect. What did you press on to get rid of the click?
It's only a very slight click sound, and it only happens once in a while. I don't think I'll worry too much about it though. Everything else about my system is nearly perfect. -
Have had mine for nearly two weeks, but besides a slight fan noise,I can't fault it - I absolutely love mine. <3
-
no not thru fusion, Im changing the settings through the power cp
-
by the way, to the OP, the lighting on the screen is fine, its just dims every 5 min or so, even when disabling the feature and power save modes.
the alienware fx lighting near the speakers is uneven, the right is very dim, as with the sound from the speakers the left is also seems not as loud as the left. Ill probably take a picture and quick video.. -
Umm so 13% of people are unhappy thats pretty bad to be honest
-
and this was my first laptop, needed one for school and stuff. on hold right now while they process my return label. ghey.
I really liked it too. Unsure If Ill reorder. Ill hate to wait again, then receive a bad one. -
I think I enjoy this laptop more and more every day.
