It occurs to me that there are many things that are unique about this boutique computer company. However, not everything about it shines. I'd like to find out what it is about Alienware that makes them so appealing to most people. In other words...what they do right? In addition, I'd like to find out what is bad about the company? Lastly, what would you do to improve things (image, hardware, software etc.) if you were in charge?
NOTE: Since in the third quarter of '08, laptops outsold desktop overall by 100,000 units, I'll focus my attention exclusively to laptops.
M17
What I like:
Fastest mobile CPU
The choice of case lids--I like the understated Ripley design--especially the rubberized mat black finish
What I don't like:
The case. It's big, heavy and a throwback to an earlier design
What, no Blu-ray writer? This is inexcusable at this level
Highly reflective LCD; could be brighter.
Their support reputation. Here, Apple sets the standard
Wish List:
Add M17x back lighting software
Longer battery life
A Smartbay?
Better (read, name brand) speakers. Most other manufacturers have moved to Altec Lansing w/sub woofers
Improve support
Anyway, that's my say, I'd like to hear yours.

These things have been discussed at length numerous times in many posts throughout this forum.

What I like
Ripley design looks cool
What I don't like
Price/Performance ratio
Ripley design is cool, but its whats under the hood that counts
Horror stories about their CS; some of them should be in a Stephen King novel
Wish list
Lower prices
Better hardware
Better CS
Smart bay would be nice, but since its not really common, its excusable
Though of course, this is likely beating a dead horse... -
Alienware did not design it or ask for any features. They saw the laptop and were like owwwww lemme sell that .... smart bay and alienfx were all on machines builf FOR AW so they can change that
some stuff could be diff but AW doesn't have control ... Yell at flex, but that stuff would be nice im just not gonna blame AW for screwing up because they didnt -

It almost sounds like a statement I'd here from one of the politicians in a town counsel meeting when he wants to escape culpability. Someone's got to be responsible? -
Flextronics / Arima designed the notebook
that why when you take the bottom off everything say Arima 840Di
Arima designed the m9750 and m9700 for alienware this was the re design of the older model and they sold it to OCZ and they released this as the OCZ Whitebook.
Alienware just made a new keyboard and paints it with a new matte finish and screws on the skull cap and sells it.
Alienware does not make their laptops they get other people to build them or they take like Clevos and put a skull cap on there. , Quanta built the m15x and m17x just how Alienware wanted them, thats why they are exclusive to AW and have all the GOODIES -
No problem though, just go through the posts. -
There is a great deal of good information in the threads here which may be a bit daunting but there is a search feature that makes it easy to find information, and the advanced search feature is especially helpful. -
yup in my sig to
i dont mind repeating most the time -
The way it is, is the way it is, and there's nothing you can do about it. So take it or leave it. Did I miss anything?
If any of that were true, the product wouldn't be around very long--unless it were a monopoly. As it is, there is loads of competition in computers. If that wasn't the case, Alienware would never need to change. -

the whitebook will only have upgrades on the GPU and Maybe cpu depending on how the new quads come out
nothing major since AW is not gonna pay to re design it
they have to pay for their design some how
its just a special brand its different its why i got it
the white book is priced around other Whitebooks thats why i said that about the price
the 4870s are coming its been said they are coming even from AW and Whitebook sellers
yea a smart bay would be nice ..... but since AW didnt do it with this one ill just have to live lol
nope the 3870's are scoreing 17032 and the asus is scoreing 17100 not much more -
I was trying to provide you with useful information because it seemed you weren't aware of previous posts or the search feature.
Now it seems you aren't aware of another feature. You "asked" if I was capable of having any useful information. If you click on a posters name you will have options to see their other posts and any threads they have started.
If I offended you by stating these topics have already been discussed in depth, I assure you it was not my intention.
I hope in the future you will refrain from personal attacks. -
Reeeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaally.......that's actually sort of surprising; I expected Xfired HD 4870s to embarrass Xfired HD 3870s at the least, but then this begs the question, how does it game in comparison with them? I remember for desktops, that while the 3800s were competitive in 3dmark, the 8800s were far superior in gaming.
Also, the m17 is MXM compatible yes? -
Yup,
the M17 has one MXM type 3 slot and one MXM hybrid slot. -
the asus kills the 3870's
its playing crysis on high at 1900 res lol
3dmarks is close though
look it up in orb
what rob said is true
we can have 2 ATI cards or
1 Nvidia (yes even 9800m gtx) maybe 280m gtx some one needs to try -
That's why I can't wait to get my hands on a pair of "true" 4870's with the DDR5!
They are gonna be awesome in the M17! -
-
i think i do not have the money making minimum wage lol ... my Grandparents are sick lol i live with them and i work and go to school
i would try it in a heart beat if i could afford it ....
it would need a new BIOS though i can tell you that -
-
It not only was on my wish list, but it is one of the reasons I bought the m17. I am really digging the notebook, my wishlist for my next notebook would be a pair of 4870 GDDR5 and an LED backlit screen. -
850Di is the M17x, Flextronics want the M17x to have all the upgrades and let the m17 just die -
What I like
It's design.
What I don't like
ATi GPU Sorry guys
Wish List
260/280 nVidia GPUs
Quad Core fix
Less reflective screen
CHEAPER PRICE -
Newegg sells the Laptop as well as a bare bones. So i would check that out -
Sry if this has been asked already somewhere else but was there any news on the 4860's?
I know that they said no to 4850's and 4870's because of heat issues.
Also does anyone know what kind of performance difference there would be between the 3870's or 4870's?
Thanks in advance,
~Cyro -
4870 would just about double the FPS
4860's i doubt would happen either ... but they would work if they were the right MXM because they have a very low TDP -
