Alienware M17X Is It Really All Powerfull

No matter how much comfort you get from being satisfied with your machine, it doesn't mean much when someone else get's zero satisfaction from the one they got. This brings to mind the old adage, "you get what you pay for." And in the case of the M17x, you should expect to get a lot. When those expectations aren't realized, a "big drama," is the least we should expect.

 

Don't think you got my point Krane, I think alot of the stories that get posted are just that "stories" no truth involved.

And those stories sound like a bigger deal when they are maxed out system.

It's all just to stir the pot so to speak.

Too true, but I would add that the M17x is no slouch for non-gaming applications.

this look like all the post on AW technical support ..... i just could not stop laughing

effectively AW don't answer often but when you see what they are asked

most of the problems theses lapto faces are located 13 inches away from thier screen

some time they effectively have a trouble with some laptops that haves defect but some one i know who had trouble with his bluray drive got sent a new m17x to replace the defective one and he have to send the defective one within the next month

so i'm kinda amased with the trouble many people have with the customer support (how ever my bother order around 60k of informatic material per yeat from dell so .... i guess they will watch alot oo trouble we can have when we order through him)

 

How could you question the laptop that hold the vantage and 06 recoreds ?

If you looked at my sig I don't own a m17x I own a m5750 which has given me its own share of problems but in the end I am very satisfied.

Last time I checked, +4dB is twice as loud. No way is 80dB 10,000 times louder (at least not to my ears)

Yeah, 80dB is fairly bad for a diesel engine-provided it's in a car and you're sitting in it. Noise is less in a car than it would be if the diesel engine was on the table next to you (Although I suppose it still wouldn't be quite as bad as 80dB)

 

Having an extra GPU doesn't always necessarily scale well, in some like WOW, its even worse.

The reason I even mentioned i7 was cos the OP does only 10-20% gaming; in which context, a single 280m GTX seems a pretty decent compromise. Since he doesn't spend all the time gaming, he doesn't even necessarily need a SLi laptop; rather he crunches number mostly instead. I dont suppose you need this reminder:




As seen, while there is no 2nd GPU, in processor intensive tasks, any desktop i7 CPU is certain to run all over the mobile C2D. Beside, the fact remains, despite being extremely fast, C2D QX9300 is last gen tech - no matter how you try to argue.

I might be an exclusion to that last sentence. Still being in high school and with parents who get all the foodies and what not, I worked my butt off all summer to make some cash. I'm just one of the few that is putting almost all of it towards a laptop.

But in conjuction with your overall point I definitely have to agree. Desktops are that big for a reason. They pack quite a punch and have a lot to them so they are less mobile. The M17x is just the exclusion when compared to most laptops.

 

Actually, the dB scale is a base 10, logarithmic scale, so every 10dB change represents either a 10-fold increase or decrease, and 3db change doubles or halves the power level.
I work with radio, so I am quite familiar with the dB scale.

Anyone who thinks the M17x fans are loud should have been around back in my early days of "clocking" desktops... Had two extra fans on my extra tall server case. They were 6 inch A/C turbo fans from work that we used on all of our Distributed Control System (DCS) cabinets. I had them setup with relays that turned them on with the PC and supplied off the mains terminals. Whoooooooooooooeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee those were some loud puppies. hehehehee aCk!!! Thfpppttt!!! BUT... they sure did get the job done before the days of water cooling, etc. came along. hehe

My M17x is no louder than my wife's Inspiron 9300 IMHO.

All that dB talk brings back horrible memories from the electrical engineering classes... aCk!

 

Sorry for the repost I forgot my original intent to post about the guy who made this thread. Go check out his posts at Dell they are equally hilarious. So far he's claimed at least a few different "baller" wall street style job descriptions of a number crunching, stock selling, presentation giving, number crunching bad@$$ who somehow finds time to post ten ridiculously long droning posts every day about a laptop I'm beginning to question if he even has. Go give a presentation and stop making me doubt buying a laptop that everyone else here seems to love.

 

Guys been busy today....well ok quick update before I go into the weekend lets clear up a little here, just read another 3-4 pages of comments since my last post...LOL got to respond in one long posting (Sorry in advance..showing respect since I was told off....)

1. I never insulted anyone here....it was others hitting me with sarcastic and wild comments first, I only respond based upon what others state or my experience and observations to date

2. Me flaming or insulting where?? yes wit picking when others made comments or assumptions upon me, not me to others LOL just not my style to confront but hold my own easy to those deserving of it, if they want it and ask for it, dont get upset when u cant handle the come back.....clearly observable for all! I didnt use words like b..sh.t anywhere did I ?? (Note I am not demanding or expecting respect, practice what you preach!!)

3. No I dont just do number crunching, with respect, I love my gaming too, as well as other major work related uses, a full and full power laptop & power desktop user, not just your bang bang dodge dodge bang bang dodge dodge lol I have been known time and time again to push machines to the edge, well thats what they are for, the difference is I do it in everyday use not just for momentary glory and show.....

4. No I am not suggesting for even one second I had a 50inch laptop LOLOL come on people, read the signature it clearly states triple screen setups and also the SAMSUNG 55" LCD, respect has been demanded, and with all due respect when some come out with silly comments like that, they are only insulting themselves, refer the english in bold below........

6. All the M17X owners that I know do have poor performance issues (FACT) since some of us here are trying to use and push our machines in all aspects and I ask the question despite what people are stating about there machines that they are performing (Seems on gaming or benchmarking apps only, which may well be true and I dont dispute them, they may have good components and build) but when the manufacturers own Technical Support repeatedly states to me that the M17X has heat, GPU & poor Overclocking issues that they are currently working on and that 90% of the reason of the latest revision of Bios/Software releases was due to this very reason is not my opinion or suggestion, also how many people here are disabling hybrid and discrete GPU in Bios and forcing dual 280Ms in there machines (I think pretty much all of you LOL that says it all, that there are issues and conflicts) hence power saving features are out of the window.....wasnt the saving feature a one of the big plus selling points of this machine 60W??? believe what you like or have any ratings or votes mean nothing when the manufacturere is saying "There are ISSUES UNRESOLVED as yet that they are working on", I am sure what they say overrides any and all opinion, poll including my own! What Ye Say...

7. I still dont believe (My opinion) after seeing the claims being put that the M17X is the most this and that, when I have seen with my own eyes Sagers, Clevos, Rocks out there pushing on the M17X on performance not just on gaming but other tasks, I still dont believe that some (Not all) people know what an extreme quad core CPU like the QX9300 can do, trust me in the M17X it is not being pushed proper, like I said before, some of you guys have removed your very own QX9300's or other CPU's placed them in other platforms and overclocked way past 3Ghz however when u put it back into your M17X for most it will not push past the 2.93Ghz if that!, par a couple with true stability and that appears to be in forced non-hybrid mode!....the main selling point for the M17X was OVERCLOCKABILITY apart from the looks design and lighting blah blah blah was the main reason for my purchase, OCing this beast to the max is the niche of the top end users this platform was aimed for...it is more than just a question that my machine is or maybe a dud, I could understand if I were just one of a few....but there seems a majority like me who may not be making a "BIG STORY" out of it, which I dont think I have or am, since I have been quite silent for months, only coming out YESTERDAY proper, after 3 months of headache and no joy...just because a couple people have a stable 3Ghz or 3.2Ghz system does not mean the majority have happy machines, it appears the majority are not using there machines truly to the max apart from gaming, emailing, forum posting LOL etc

8. Who here or anywhere (Lets count on user numbers and proper overclocking shall we) has pushed there machine on multiplier alone with auto linked mode to 3-3.2Ghz STABLE? & who has pushed there machine to 3-3.2Ghz on unlinked FSB/MEM and lets list out the FSB/MEM settings also so we can arrange them too, that have worked stable under EVERYDAY USE, gaming, work, surfing, emailing, editing, converting, burning, transfers etc after the momentary overnight parallel Vantage & Prime runs.....lets see how many we can count shall we?

9. Whether people think I am being truthful or not doesnt bother me LOL who cares, I have a say just like any other, I am not here to push an agenda about me being truthful or not........I am here with real interest on hardware, technical, Ocing, boundaries, limits, issues, opinion, guaging response, in reality dont want to sideline off the issues or claim I got big scores or 100 laptops LOL I like my gear, I like reading on what such gear can do, have admitted at this moment I cant touch any scores claimed here with the machine I have not seeking glory....not claiming or wanting to claim any glory either.

9. Where I have generalized is simply due to what Dell / Alienware have said to me and purely upon some of the responses I see here....and based upon YES what I have been reading on the various threads and performance feedbacks with so many users here........so lets get back to reality....

Alienware M17X was designed for overclockers, gamers, enthusiasts in mind i.e. the top end of the wishing and dreaming end of the "portable" market.......the looks and design are just the externals...means nothing to me or any other true Ocer, hence why the serious overclockers have the MOBO on a cardboard box with a can of liquid nitrogen in hand and a wrapped tube over the CPU LOLOL where are the lights and design for them......do they give a .... no its all about the claim and to see if that claim is true

So lets focus on these aspects

A - Overclockability Rating 1-10 score......

B - 1-10 score, Performance (If you truly know what the CPU's can do and contrary to what was stated before intel used basic setup to push the QX9300 to 3.7Ghz no real special wow stuff hence this CPU even in a mobile platform should go to 3.2Ghz - 3.5Ghz and run stable, proof is with people like Mandrakes M17X, so why arnt the rest doing it or coming close to it, not everone else out there is a plum noob, eys some others out there also know what they are doing, so whats wrong.......???

C - 1-10 score, GPU Performance I happen to have the dual 280M's which I know to be shrunk GTX9800+ cards, hence yes there will be heat and some performance loss but I have seen what the latter original cards could do, (Go youtube to learn a little more) so where is the performance in this dual SLi setup taking into consideration the heat, the mobile platform and remembering we are in SLi now...........

Who is interested in Crysis this and that and I ran and played this for 8 hours and 10 hours LOLOL any laptop or desktop is designed to have a lifespan to run for 10 years!!! leave it on and it should humm away nicely for years even with a 10 year 100% cpu cycle on all cores........go to intel secret labs they run dual vantage and prime for months a year on end with quad cores running 100% on basic air cooling and check out the results!!!........hours mean nothing, momentary hitting top scores and then a BSOD is for the ones seeking glory and ranking they cant run the MOBO on a cardboard box with nitro in hand for emailing, gaming or working LOLOL Ranking is one thing but take into mind this is a platform for real USE...

We have all bought a WORKING or supposed to be WORKING platform with claims behind it........dont loose focus because it looks nice, lights up nice, runs a game or all games for 10 hours at this res or that res at an average fps......

Right enough said....another long posting which I am sure is going to rattle up more cages now with all due RESPECTs to allllll, but I am going to enjoy the wkend now LOL.......enjoy your postings but please drop the anger, upsets and confrontation modes......it isnt about that or me trying to dirty AW....like I said before I was all for the M17X if it worked PROPER.....and i mean PROPER.

Yeah we should all ignore POLLS from the community of M17x users who give us a cross sections of experiences on different configurations, countries, types of users (hardcore/general users ect).

We should also ignore the advice/experience of guys that have been here for ages, help people all the time and have rep coming out there ears.

But we should all take the word of a new poster who writes long winded articles full half truths and contradictions and all his imaginary friends who have M17x that don't run properly.

And Rich Kid who is just a out and out troll.

Who has asked you or the whole to take my word for it? I have tried to focus back on true aspects of the product, why the upset tone and brush off attitude, I dont see that helping me or the other poster RICH KID!!? where are the rep points in that!.

No one is suggesting ignorance infact despite some sarcasm which I expected hence no biggy to me, I diverted to facts not assumptions and place a proper challenge, listing and simple scoring basis, again no one has to read, respond or take offence lol.....just because you place assumptions in stating that I am pouring out half truths, then go find the facts for your self, go to intels secret lab vids, go to true hardcore gaming websites and check the forums, (Some are even using my own wordings to quote the same problems they have and appear to be the real demanding users out there).

When it comes to helping the community or aiding with problems (rather more I would say work arounds to keep the machines going when people are running into problems with due respect since it isnt anyones fault the product has problems from what I can see) have not been ridiculed either.

Oh and by the way just because someone has been a member for a long time means nothing or the rep points they have, I would say factuality, manner and attitude has more presentation in the sheer brush off and ignorance shown.

Like I said before, stop the upsets, focus like real adults and focus on the aspects as stated since they are exactly what AW has used to sell the product.

So excusing your upset, since it doesnt benefit me or any other and in truth does not bother me, please, first get to know your hardware properly, once educated then either upgrade your PC to my spec or find someone close with the same spec and then compare, stay focussed and like an adult list the true view, rating, results etc you gain.

Once again lets not divert the title of this thread off the tracks to personalilty clashes........I really dont care....like I said if you choose to "bully" as RICH KID pointed out some do, in which you have proved to be a fine specimen then in truth maybe you should reflect upon your current manner and realise that you are being viewed, reviewed and guaged by the many not just between me and another poster.

I stated it before, if you choose to ask for a come back, I am more than happy to tame it for you.....have to do it on a daily basis to keep people focussed.

6. POOR PERFORMANCE? Ok, there is no other laptop out there that is faster except in terms of CPU there is the Clevo DF900. What the heck are you talking about? The M17X is a gaming PC made for gamers and for games not to run photoshop or dreamweaver... YOU ARE CONFUSED. On top of that get your facts together but the M17X has no heat issue. They might be able to improve the cooling system in future releases but it's really one of the best cooling design and one of the laptop that runs the most cool with the hardware it holds.

7. The QX9300 is capable of a great OC if you can water cool it. You might even get into the 6GHZ with liquid nitrogen cooling. The thing is you are not realistic about what a laptop should do.

8. Since the new BIOS, anyone here can reach the 3GHZ mark and most could reach the 3.2GHZ mark. Remember that OC is not always easy and it involves a lot of patience and trial and error.

Of course playing Crysis 10 hours at max settings means something. It means the PC is absolutely incredible and when you say you had to stop playing after 10 minutes because of fan noise you only become so ridicule that we should petition your removal from this forum under the basis you are not smarter than a new born donkey.

If anyone is making assumptions its your statements....you have unknowingly contradicted the actual CHIP MAKER INTEL....like i said go to their website or you tube and check a quad core on air cooling running for months with vantage and prime running together 100% on all cores on mid 40c temps, nothing too fancy.

Watercooling brings out the best in any CPU, guess what liquid nitrogen is even better
