I have now been reading all post, googled, reinstalled and i would say i did my homework!
Yesterday i got my Alienware M17 X, everything was prepared, i started it up. And it went directly into windows 7. It all looked very nice.. BUT
The mouse pad shuttered, oppening and closing windows went slow, internet went slow! Everything went slow!
I installed a game call of duty which i was unable to control because of the shuttering!
i looked in devices, and everything seemed to be install inc all drivers!
ive tried downloadning new ones, it does not help, and most of the time the installation ends up in failure and just freezes.
Had this laptop for about 2 days now, and havent been able to use it at all!!
Im going crazy.. anyone knows what it might be?
Sorry for the language, im danish so thats why![]()

Are you in the ''I dont know what stealth mode is'' phase?
I think every m17x user went through it. -
-
What you mean by i7 920XM?
sorry for the stupid Q, not so good at this.. just want my computer to rock as it should!

I was just checking quickly up on stealt mode.
Is it the button which is selecting weather to use intergrated graphic card or dual? Cuz that i know. I know use Nvidia SLI.?
Just copied the system file!

I've never owned a M17X-R1. Maybe someone else can help you. -
anyone please!?
Im really getting suicede-thoughts here!! -
Hit the button to the far right of the touch menu and it shoud ask you to restart or something after switching GPU's. The button looks like a speedometer. Then restart and that might fix it. If not restart, enter BIOS and then turn of the integrated graphics in the bios menu. Then report back here and maybe somone else can have more suggestions. I never had nvidia cards so I don't know. But try the first suggestions.
P.S. before doing anything stupid, can you mail me your laptop? -
"BIOS Information

BIOS_Version2: ALWARE - 6040000 "
I noticed that your M17x BIOS is still A02.
you might want to upgrade it to version A03, I know for sure it solved a bunch of problems for my M17X, and maybe after that you could try and play with stealth and other features.
it is critical that you upgrade your BIOS first!
but do it carefully! do not do anything while it's updating. leave the laptop alone while the BIOS is flashing or you might brick or corrupt your system (not recommended)
here's a link to the download: http://support.dell.com/support/dow...typeid=-1&dateid=-1&formatid=-1&fileid=372828
good luck! -
Okay.. The stealth mode thing actually worked!!!
Thank God! And thanks! Alot!
Now... because i reinstalled driver & tried such many things i now respawned my com to get it back as it was.
Im currently downloadning the bios upgrade, so thats my next.
But now when i press the speedomoeter nothing happens? When i press volume up and down buttons, the volume goes up and down, but i dont get any picture on the screen either? dont know what i did before to get that?
Also when i enter the command center the only option i have is FX, there is no other choices?
Ive tried reinstall command center but it dos not help? -

1 more thing.
Just tried to update the bios.
Run the program, but when it got to the actually flashing of the bios, it just stopped, and gave me the warning that the program stopped working?
Anything i do wrong? you are supposed to run this from W7 rigth? -
Try restarting. If it says A03 on the BIOS screen then it did infact load. If it's not much trouble, I'd do a respawn from the respawn partition after another restart. Then when it's done your systen will return to the state it was when you pulled it out of the box. At this point you will probably have to turn stealth mode back off. Then I think you'll be good to go. You'll also have to reinstall your games and any data that you previously installed.
-
I needed to run it as an admin, tahts why
Okay.. Everything seemes to work now.. thats really great.. Now i can feel the power this machine has
But still got one problem..
My command center still only shows the FX icon. The rest of the option are not there and has never been since i opened this machine up? even thougt i reinstalled it nothing happends ? -
Great to hear you got it running as it should, not sure on the command center issue though. Try uninstalling it and then reinstalling it off your disks or you can download it here from the dell site
-
Tried that now.. I did not helped
.. I dont know what's wrong here!
am i missing anything important bu not having a full control center?
Anyway im so glad i got it all up & running..
Thank you thank you thank you -
No prob, I don't think your missing anything really. I never used alien sense. The facial recongnition login feature. I pretty much just used it top play with the purty lights.
-
mmm purty lights.... i NEED SHINY! SHINY NOW!!!
-
The lights i got.. and hell yeah, nerdy but nice
Aliensense is also running on my system, and works most of the times.. But it aint a choice in the command center..?
I just tried the game call of duty 4 on the alienware. And it feels like its loading alot of times in the game?
I should nok be like that. When its done loading its going perfectly, but its all the time, like every 2 minut its loading or something cuz the game aint running weel..
Do you get what i mean? Maybe i set womething wrong?
Is there any way to set it your best or is it normal? I don not feel that way you know? -
you probably got the fx lite
download the command center from dell selecting the english filter and reinstall it to get the full version -
Im about to download it now. so ill see!
Do i understand et proberly when i say that the reason why my call of duty game is running slow has something to do with the bios? And that i really cant do anything about it?
Read the stuttering on m17x thread, and as i see as the conclusion you really cant do anything about it? or am i wrong about this?
My english aint that well, so sometimes i have a hard time understanding it all
Thanks for your help ones again! -
-
What is your setup? What specs are you running CPU/GPU wise? And what COD? MW2? -
His setup is on the first page. Did not mention display driver.
Nick, I know you were able to resolve the stealth mode, but take a look at the following AW KB Articles. This will help to clarify things...
- What is HybridSLI?
- What is Stealth Mode?
- Why is my Alienware M17x mobile system not detecting its discrete video card(s)?
Concerning slowness/poor performance in-game, see my post here:
How to install/reinstall 186.82 for the M17x R1 and update current SLI Profiles - using this same process, all of my games including COD:MW2 were running without issue.
For the Command Center - be aware that it is buggy with W7 and not all of it shows up. I believe the only part of it which actually does work is AlienFX (the lights). Not sure as I have chosen to stay away from W7 for now.
Also, you mentioned the volume keys and not seeing the 'picture'. This requires the Alienware OSD (Onscreen Display) driver/software be installed. It can be found here:
ftp://ftp.us.dell.com/app/R240771.exe - What is HybridSLI?
-
Batboy:
I now did all that you said. Reinstalled nvidia graphic driver and read about hybridSli og stealth.
I went into call of duty 4, and it helped a little bit. It aint that bad as before. But it still stutters often, but not for so long time as before.
Hybrid Sli is on, and the same with the stealth mode.. I should be running on full power here..
My graphic card is 2 X geforce gtx 280m.
Am i missing anything here? it should nok stutter at all should it? -
I have now been testing call of duty 4 for a while now. And it seems like the big loading thing is gone now.. But it is stuttering a little bit every 4 - 5 second. Its very little but it is enough to ruin the gameplay.
I have also noticed that when i playback on youtube ect, it is also stuttering a little bit. Like the music slows down just for a short while? Dont know if these things are connected somehow? -
Sounds like it's time to get on the phone and let dell know about it. They might try and give you new nvidia cards, but recommend to them that you'd like the ATI cards.
-
As I mentioned, I had no issues at all with MW2. I was actually amazed as the game is stunning in terms of graphics.
The stuttering in audio you may be having in youtube videos could be the DPC Latency issue which is going to exist until Dell addresses the problem. -
Okay. it seems like disabling both hybrid and intergrated in the bios was the answer. Its almost totally gone, and the rest is to live with
Im not quite sure what happends when i disable them both.
Noticed that my computer now only detecs the two discrete card my 2 Xtx 280m, and that the intergrated is gone.
What it's good fore i dont know, but it helped
Thx alot!
I read in another forum that turning of alienface reg. could help on the stuttering in youtube, but dont know about that. it seems like i cant turn it off since i cant enter it in command mode "my previos problem with command center". But it aint that important for me, the most important is the game and that im satisfeid and THAT i am.. Thx alot again -
Well, with HybridSLI its touch and go. From what I have experienced, some games are fine while others just seem to choke out - I blame the display driver for this (still needs work). Having Hybrid SLI AND Integrated Graphics enabled in the BIOS will keep the 9400M G Integrated GPU alive - what this is good for is battery time and a lot of it.
Needless to say, keep in mind, if you happen to boot up on battery power only you will be greeted with a nice BIOS Beep and message stating you are on battery and the integrated GPU is going to be made active. This is fine.
When you return to AC Power, be sure to boot back into the BIOS and kill both Integrated Graphics and HybridSLI.
If you are on AC and move to battery without a Reboot, you will not switch automatically to the 9400 since you have disabled the two options. Just so you know as I am sure it will come up.Pain in the rear - but it is what seems to work best with the M17x R1 and NV GPUs.
I need to put together a main post here on NBR detailing my process for maximizing performance of the M17x R1 and reducing/eliminating DPC Latency audio stutter. I'll do this when I have some free time - for now, all of the info can be found via my signature link. -
have you also updated your SLI profiles, I had the same issue with this game(MW2) where it would slow down then I updated the profiles now it runs very smooth. I agree with bat its a gourgeous game by the way and the action is real smooth.
-
yeah i updatedet the Sli and after that it helped me alot
Batboy: Thx fore your time.. that helped me all the way without to much pain..
-
No problem. Glad its all sorted out!
Regarding my SLI Mod, NV released another update a few days ago. The update includes a Mass Effect II SLI Profile change which I will add later today. You can use the NVIDIA Update but keep in mind it includes a bunch of items which don't need to be there (Sidebar, Microsoft Office, etc.). -
On the update page it says it should run with driver 195.62? Should i install that driver or keep the 186.82 as you recommended in your other thread?
regarding the first sli update you had ind your other thread explaining how to update drivers.
When i dobbelclicket a little window popped up. But it went so fast that i did' not even got to see what was on it.
Can i be sure that it has update? cuz i did not get any feedback from it. And for what i read i should not have to move i t anywere. Just open it from were it was downloaded right?
Alienware M17x dont work at all?
