you can disable physics, FYI

The reason Vantage hasn't been popular is because it requires DX10 and subsequently Vista. I think with the release of Win 7 and a new generation of GPUs, Vantage will really take off.

I know, but my point was, if you bought dedicated hardware for it, you don't want to have to disable it do you? A benchmark should be able to fairly and evenly demonstrate the FULL capabilities of your ENTIRE system.

Ya the whole world needs to stop complaining and moaning so much about Vista. It works just as well as XP now and is not any slower. It is a shame that propaganda smeared it so bad, I happen to really like Vista, although I like Windows 7 even more
I would gladly see Vantage be more openly used, also doesn't help that the trial gives you 1 run vs unlimited in 06. I have to admit, I only use Vantage because I got it free with my desktop GPUs (thank you EVGA). -

 i'm thinking about buying vantage and 3dmark06. the benchmarking world must see who i am.
-
Let me put it a better way. There isn't a free version of Vantage worth using as the basic version only allows you to run it once, compared to 06's basic version that allows you many runs. -
Every single piece of testing, monitoring, and benchmarking software I use (and most people), is free. Heck, even my overclocking software is free.
I won't be spending any money for Vantage. A far, far, superior method of testing a rigs gaming ability is gaming. -
I think there is no question that currently the M17X is the most powerful laptop in the world and definitely the best built gaming laptop for that matter.
The real question is for how long??? -
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
how long? Possibly until someone gets 4850's in their m17. lol
SO, not very long at all -
-
W90 can't beat M17x and M17 will?
c'mon
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
ya the cards in the m17 are better. twice the ram for one thing. The cards in the W90 are for all intensive purposes also 4850's, but with 512mb of ram. The only thing that seperates a (REAL) 4870 and a 4850 are clocks and GDDR5. And clocks can easily be changed. We already know that the W90 uses GDDR3 4870's
-
I know, and thats exactly why i said it.
1GB ram isn't going to make 4850 surpass GTX280m, specially due the good overclock capabilities in GTX280m -
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
i am confident the 4850 will overclock just as well....
my 3870's are running at 745 core and 1060 ram from 660/850 -
4850 runs hotter and whitebook isn't exactly the best cooling ever made
.
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
I have taken the cooling into my hands...lol
I idle at 36c on the GPUs -

scook9 is on a record in benchmarking. very close to being number one.
-
I highly doubt that M17 with 4850 can surpass M17x and I'm ATi fanboy
But only time will tell -
I'm just happy we're given an upgrade option from A.W. that's in fact a huge improvement.
Not that I'm not already happy with my performance. -
as much as i love my asus id have to say the m17x. just for the fact that the nvidia cards have good driver support.
-
Ya know, I think as soon as the 4850's w/1GB memory arrive to the folks who have ordered them, the M17 will be a more appropriate comparison to the W90.
-
Now if only Dellienware would release the GDDR5 4870's for the M17x, my summer (and the rest of 2009) would be complete! lol -
No doubt Alienware/Dell know full well what a winner they have on their hands.
They will surely do everything they can to maximize it's success and providing a worthwhile upgrade path is likely. -
Since the AW 4850 xfire on the m17 is out, will the AW driver work on the asus w90 cards? That would be great. I went to the driver download section of AW support but they only have the 3000 series driver so far; just curious if anyone else thinks this could be a possible solution? Also, can the 4850's be purchased and inserted into the asus w90 and then use the AW drivers? I hate the body style and the 'gamer' affiliation that comes with AW computers, I'd just feel like a total dork owning one (and my family would laugh at me
) so any way I could get the cards to work in the Asus would be awesome (also love the fact that the Asus can overclock like mad and has an 18.4'' screen vs 17'' in the AW)
I hope they don't stop making the w90, I'm at about $3000 but I want to save at least $3500 before dropping $2349 on the asus (plus more if the 4870's are replaceable by 4850's)
Thanks all! -
no they will NOT work

Alienware M17x vs Asus W90 (it's really nVidia vs AMD)
