I got notice from Amazon this morning that Office 2010 (64 bit version) ships on June 15. If you need office and are placing an order for an Alienware I would wait for the new version of office since we are so close.

Why would that have any bearing what so ever on your choice to buy?

You have to be the first person in history to suggest delaying the purchase of a flagship gaming rig because of a new skin on an old piece of office software.

I mean i enjoy Office 2010 (tech net for the win), but its not something i would wait for

I am the same way. Tech net for the win lol...

I would never delay buying a computer due to productivity software.. Hardware upgrades definitely..

Yea.. plus if you buy 2007, they give you a free upgrade to 2010. Or so the promotion was like that. Don't know now.

I'm not 100% sure about Office OEM (through Dell) but you might want to ask if you get a free 2010 upgrade like you do if you buy Retail or VL Office 2007 right now.

If you buy an Alienware Laptop with a version of office 2007, you automatically get a FREE upgrade to Office 2010 when it is released.

    1) Alienware is no longer a niche 'gaming' rig. Dell has pushed the brand into 35 countries. It now appeals to a wider market. Don't kid yourself it really is a Dell.

    2) Many Dell business users have switched to Alienware due to price points. The M17X(with better GPU) is $2000 cheaper than the Dell Precision M6500.

    3) Those who have to upgrade with a key will probably have to reinstall 2007 every time they want to resinstall 2010.

    4) Upgrades tend to clog the registry with junk as opposed to clean installs. I know many on this site are interested in benchmarking.

    5) I much prefer Lotus to Office but since Lotus was bought by IBM they have run the brand into the ground. Unfortunately Office is the only game in town, pardon the pun.

    6) I am not sure why it took Microsoft so long to come out with the Office 2010 64 bit version. Office 2007 is compatible and works pretty well with Windows 7 64 but it is not perfect. There have been some bugs reported with Office 2007 and windows 7 64 bit.

Regardless... it's much much MUCH better quality then Dell's XPS line for example. Yea you know what the price of AW machines is outside US... in many of those 35 countries.... much higher.

I dunno what's all the fuss with Office... I only use it for simple things. For my university reports and professional-looking presentations LaTeX is the way to go for me. :)

    Oh, and it's free. :p

Hence the reason we call it Dellienware ;)

I think you ment to say "some Dell business users" not many. While it the M17x is a very nice computer it is not a business class workstation like the M6500. Plus not many people want to go to board meetings with a crazy light up alien head on the cover of their laptop when image actually does matter.

But more importantly its just not a work station. Doesnt have nearly the memory capability and saying the 5870's are "better" than the work station card is a bit wrong. You can play games on the 5870's but in technical fields when you need a workstation card they dont cut it (plus the drivers are buggy as heck comparitivly)

maybe... but not counting my fight with the M17x and the 107 Operating systems i have had crash out how many times does that really happen

Ok, people that are going to care and purchase this machine for a business purpose are not the ones that are going to be benchmarking the machine. Plus if you are hard core into benchmarking you know how to tweek the system to max capability. Your not just some mindless git that clocks everything stupidly high and hopes for the best.

Yeah i wish Open Office and M$ excel could have children and thats the office program i want :p (but i need excel and the rest of the office package is just for randoms things... though access is nice as well)

That i dont know. As i said i've been using it for months now because of my technet membership so i guess i havent really noticed the wait as much as most. But I will recommend Technet to EVERYONE. For the price you pay you have more goodies than you can ever use. I mean i get 10keys to EVERY OS microsoft has ever made, free tech manuals, all versions of the office programs, and so much more that i havent even installed. For the cost of 1 OS i get almost everything M$ makes that is available to normal consumers. I just wish M$ had the MSDNAA program available while i was in college because thats freaking sweet as well (plus has a bit more available i believe)

Was told by a Dell Business manager that within his book of customers 1/10 were buying Alienware laptops. This makes sense to me as the XPS & Alienware teams designed the R2. I love Sci Fi but the M17x looks more Detroit business to me than it says Sigourney Weaver Alien. The lights are easy enough to turn off. I asked a business associate in China what they recommended for a business quality laptop. They told me Asus was their number one pick and Dell was their last pick.

Have you seen the Orange M6500? It would make a Dutch fan blush and is very ostentatious.

If you are a 3D modeler than you have a point. But the average business user connecting to an XP network using legacy software and printers is not going to notice. In fact the 5870 is overkill for a typical business user who spends the day drafting email, or using a data base or accounting application. Engineers and 3D modlers are a very tiny subset of the typical business user.

The M6500 has maximum capacity of 3x500 gig while the M17x has max 2x 500gig and the M6500 measures fingerprint while the M17x measures facial features.

It only takes a printer to corrupt your registry. Keep it clean, keep it lean! When Vista came out I remember HP were selling truck loads of XP printers at business stores and than not providing proper drivers. The cheap printers were the last ones to get fixed. The upgraded drivers often didn't work. I personally threw several HP products away and switched to Samsung. Most people think their registry is fine until they run a registry cleaner. Most people typically have hundreds of errors from adding, upgrading and deleting software. Registry cleaners often clean more than they should so best not to corrupt the registry in the first place. Dell has a magic fix for all registry errors...call India...reinstall your operating system from scratch. If that doesn't work, try again. Dell tech support is great but they simply can't find registry errors caused by 3'rd party software.

All work and no play makes Johnny business a dull boy.

The claim to fame of the M6500 is the anodized aluminum but M17x owners already get that at the base price. I simply can't justify an extra $2000 the 3D modeling GPU when I don't 3D model. If I need an extra 500 gig I will go to tiger direct and buy one for $50.
