last year intel clarksfield was introduced in the M15x amongst other lineup changes. what do you think the changes (if any) to alienware's lineup will be for fall/winter this year?

I am not sure there is going to be much this year as the next intel platform will be out in first quarter of 2011. I believe AW will wait until next year to make any new announcements.

Until the end of 2010, I would imagine best case scenario is the announcement of an M17X with the upcoming 6870 which may make it out before Christmas.

the m15x is likely to be the first if you ask me as it requires less work to make a single card desing then doing a cfx or sli capable one

It must also take into consideration that these are new products the SXPS 15 and 17

From my point of view, Dell probably does not spend money in the refresh of the M15x and M17x because since early January, there is a high chance they have their refresh at CES under the platform Huron River with Sandy Bridge processor.

After this is just my theory and it may be false ;)

And since intel is releasing Sandy on 9 Jan.
Sandy to be relased on Jan 9 2010.

will alienware make it on time with the new technology? The wait is killing me. :p

    Not just a 13", but a gaming-capable 13".

Getting rid of the 13" models in the XPS line made me not happy. Alienware has their 11.6" M11x, but I'd love to see a gaming-capable 13" machine from Dell or Alienware.

they might have considered 13" but that would have almost looked like a 15" as m11x already is thicker and deeper than my old vaio z which is 13". so if it was 13 and looked 15 then it might not look that much appealing and people would rather buy the m15x(which actually is bigger than usual 15" laptops). just saying.

Agreed, we need some 13" greatness here!
I'm a little skeptical about this whole XPS thing, I know a guy from Dell has confirmed it, but damn these specs are just waaaaay too powerful! The M17x is gonna look like a paperweight compared to the new Dells..

M17x and M15x were hits for sure. I think people still just look at the pics of them even if they don't own one. Not perfect, but still fantastic machines.

Yes its really interesting to see them with a good design like this. The difference with old versions is really huge. I think future updates will be less dramatic for now.

IMO with all the M17x-r1 teething problems (in my experience at least) they will test the heck out of any new designs. No more XPS 1730 or M17x-r1 fiascos. Fixing machines over and over and swapping them for new units must have cost Dell a fortune.

Hopefully they don't get cold feet and drop AW completely.

There has been a couple of thread about this already, most of us still believe it will be for Q1 2011 with sandy bridge cpus and AMD 6xxx or Nvidia fermi gpus. Plus I expect goodies such as sata 6gbps and USB 3.0!!

I heard that they were thinking about adding 'stability' to the next refresh - just a rumour but I think they are over extending - I mean if it's broken why fix it... (/Fe) <-- Irony

So from what it sounds the Refresh will be in Q2011 it seems. What are the chances of Alienware doing a complete new design? That would be interesting :)

I dont think a complete new design will be the case. I think we will see a evolution. Not a small one but not a very big one either. I think the screen will look more like the m15x and i think there going to do something new with alien fx.

Something else that might be of interest is that the same person below published a post about the new XPS line 2 months ago so there might be some validity to his rumors.

Time-wise, since the new XPS line got released 2 months after his post maybe
(or maybe not) the M17x R3 too is a month or two away.

    MY guess would be...

    USB 3.0
    Hinge redesign

I'd hope they would also consider:

Mouse button redesign, dedicated buttons, not a rocker.
More memory support? That would require extra...
Find a way to make the laptop smaller and lighter...

I'd expect them to keep RGB since it's not available in the new studio lineup.

As everyone says, it's just speculation.

This info was presented in a thread that was closed so I am going to repost it here: Possible M17X R3 Leaked Info

No one really knows for sure what will come out in the M17X R3 and no one knows if it will be before Christmas.

    My opinion is the following:

If release is before Christmas then the M17X R3 will have:
    1. USB 3.0
    2. Maybe redesign
    3. Optimized cooling
    4. Maybe and that's a big maybe AMD Radeon 6870M graphic card
    5. Most likely what is linked in the article above

If the release is after Christmas, let's say March then the M17X R3 will have:
    1. USB 3.0
    2. Sandy Bridge platform. (As Joker mentioned in the closed thread, it's yet to be proven how much better that platform is going to be compared to the current one.)
    3. Nvidia GTX485M and/or AMD Radeon 6870M
    4. Redesign
    5. Lots of maybes on what else will come in the new flagship...
