If you are looking for a perfect backup method, you can simply clone the whole disk (with 100% what's on it). In case of trouble, you simply clean the disk and restore the whole thing from backup. There is a very handy free utility to do that: DriveImage XML. Basically, DriveImage XML is a simplified version of Acronis imaging software. It is also included on major 'backup utils bundles' e.g. Hiren's BootCD, what means you don't have to create your own system rescue disks to manage your computer in case of Windows failure.
This is how I back up my M14x where I keep all sensitive data. A full copy of a 120GB SSD to an USB 3.0 external drive takes some 55 minutes. I clone the disk once a month. The utility works fine with full drive encryption like TrueCrypt. The main con is that a cloned copy of a drive takes 1:1 space, e.g. if you want to clone a 120GB drive, the copy will take as much space (which is hardly a problem these days). -
Complete backup is available starting with Windows 7 Professional and higher. So, if you do an anytime upgrade to Windows 7 Professional, you get the ability to save full backups that can be restored to your reformatted drive and you also get the additional features of Windows 7 professional.
The other option is to wait for Windows 8 Professional upgrade...
The only downside I've found with the complete backup is that it doesn't support re-imaging to a smaller drive. So, you drive must be at least as large as your original drive. And, another benefit, is that the images are differenced. So, if you do a complete backup every day to another drive, the backup will only be as large as all of your unique data combined Unless of course you are backing up to DVDs in which case you need to create a new set each time. -
I recommend Acronis all the way for this one. The In-Built Windows options aren't that good - the number of times it's failed to restore for me are numerous.
Alienware Respawn Altenative.
