I own the same headset and I think it's straight up stereo x2. No 5.1 or 7.1 at all. It's quite a basic/old headset that Alienware just rebranded. I used the Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Go! Pro for my Alienware laptop. It's like $40 or less and it's Creatives newest USB sound card. The difference isn't really night and day but I would say it's worth it for only $40. I think it does a fake surround sound conversion into any analog headphones (like the Alienware TactX) to give a more 5.1 headset feel.

Alienware TactX headset is stereo only. 5.1 or 7.1 headsets should have 3 or more connectors (ex: Rockat headset) or use USB (ex: Razer Megalodon)

Flame is right. Analog headsets have 3 or more plugs but if you use a USB connector there is soundcard technology (if its supported) that offers "virtual" 5.1 or 7.1 which basically just emulates 5.1 or 7.1 in a stereo headset. I have both and they are virtually the same but I am not an audiophile. I added a link to the headset setup I use if you are interested.

The Alienware TactX Headset is precisely a rebranded SteelSeries 5HV2 :D
