hi i have an alienware m766 with issues and i would like to know what i can do to save it.
i'm a mobile dj and when this laptop gets hot it starts to splutter the music out,its using a 3.6 pent 4 and 2 gb of ddr1 ram.also i noticed it takes a while to open folders for example the music folders when i go into the folder its fine untill i load music with wmp then it hangs,.................... then plays file.after that it will play files as fast as i expect it too,i have downloaded and used 6 different pc mixers all start to stutter about an hour into it, there is a known issue with the graphic card, when you play games the screen is garbled, but normal use its fine i dont play games nor does the mixing program really use the card at all.

    someone please help.

ok i have now fixed this issue, for anyone with the same heat related issue all i did was took out the heat sink cleaned it and removed the mountain of wet runny paste???? re seated with artic silver, before i did this the processor was running 38oc on start up and 98oc full throttle now its running 22oc and 36oc.

the other issue that i cant't seem to find help on is the battery will not charge, the light and the icon in windows will sometimes come on, as charging but shortly after that will go off and show either no battery detected or fully charged, both are wrong.
i hope someone can help me.

definitely sounded like an overheating issue, yes. as for the battery, it could be possible that it's simply dead by now. try a battery testing program (such as the free "Mobile Meter" program) to determine how healthy your battery still is.

Battery is probably dead or dying. Your going to be on AC with this machine unless you care to look for a new one which maybe tough.

That runny paste stuff must have been several months/years of dust that absorbed humidity in the air like a sponge. If you live in a hot humid environment you should be checking/cleaning more frequently.

i brought a brand new battery for this which i'm now selling, that didnt fix the problem, any other ideas????? the laptop isnt left in a hot place i think it was either 5 year old paste or the previous owner knew nothing about thermal paste application.the heat has fried the video card i think cos when i go to run games lines and triangle slices appear, but i'm not willing to spend the 80 quid on a new one as i dont play games on it,video and dvds are fine except the hold em game in vista which will artifact and shut the laptop down,i even tryed changing the agp speed but it wouldnt hold on x4 and shut down straight away.i need to find a way to set the agp to 4 before windows boots in,no option in bios to change.

mobile meter didnt work on vista, but i found a program that reads battery health.it says
    status - online
    charge - 0%.0mwh
    conditions - 0mw 17.49v 0c (which change's when refreshed)
details - oem (no date) 00002
    capacity - 8627mwh (of 8000)
info - liIo,o cycles, 1% wear (and other battery reads 10% wear)
i thought it may have been the charging curcuit on the board but seeing as it now reads the status could the power port/plug be at fault??

hmm. did the battery charge fully, or did it basically go from 0% charge to full charge in an instant?
