Getting back to the topic, you pay a premium Alienware products. But you get more problems what with inadequate support, AW limiting your laptops overall "ability" by voiding your warranty if you overclock anything, and killing the earth by wasting precious voltage by powering millions of alienheads around the world. I've never had problems with AW myself, but I did plenty of research over the past year+ in deciding what laptop to buy myself, and AW was one of the first companies I went to. When I compared similar systems to AW systems, including the infamous former OCZ Whitebook vs. the M17), you can see a pretty significant price difference. The only thing I felt I was getting back in return was that alien head, and a fancier keyboard.
As a side note, I dont think AW would offer to pay me the restock fee I would be charged if I returned my system, just to keep it (My current notebook-formerly-known-as-Whitebook reseller just offered me that just to keep it). Havent decided yet. -
When all that fallout between OCZ and Flextronics happened, I panicked, thinking I bought a laptop which I thought would be upgradeable to dual 4870's, but all the sudden wouldnt be anymore. Sweet as the laptop already was with xFire 3870s, I bought it specifically with the 4870's in mind. Being that it still has issues that may or may not allow it to ever be upgraded in the current form of the "Whitebook", as well as some other random stuff, I decided to return it.
That is until I was offered a good amount of money just to keep it. Now I have another week or 2 to decide whether its worth it. -

with those upgrade it will game well for at least 3 years depending how the future of games go
EDIT: deleted other 2 post after hep mentioned it ... My bad . -
I'm hoping for it to last at least for 7 years though. -
MR.Moo.... stop triple posting.
-
In my honest opinion though, I wish I waited in buying my Whitebook. Its a great system as it is, and if it isnt upgradeable to the 4870's, it will still be probably the 1st or 2nd best bang for the buck powerhouse gaming notebook in the world. Of course, that is only the case if you pay good money for it. I may be biased, but I dont believe AW is ever a good bang-for-the-buck choice (unless you get some %30 employee discount). It doesnt help that their parent company is Dell, a company that'll sell you overpriced components that were new 1-3 years ago. -
Hey long time no post.
Anyways I see many people here trying to get alienware laptop solely because of its looks. Granted that alienware laptops have unique looks, but they just aren't worth the price AW charges.
For example, I'll compare alienware m15x with Sager NP8660 (Built on Clevo M860TU)
Both laptops have:
- 15.4" Screen (1920x1200)
- Intel Core Duo 2.93GHz
- GeForce 9800M GTS 512MB
- 4Gb Ram
- 2X Blue-Ray drive
- 320GB Hard drive
- Windows Vista Ultimate 64-Bit
- 3 yr. Warranty
- All other options are the same as well
The M860TU will cost you around $2,300 US
Difference of $1,270 US
Now if you don't want to pay $1,270 for the look, you can get your M860TU with customized skin for only $89.

sorry for triple posting i just wasnt paying attention( i deleted them )
and flex is working with AW to revamp the cooling system. they know there is heat issues and they are trying to correct them. the 4870's will be nice though
-
-
But I'm starting to feel that I could get another notebook with just different looks that would be more worth it. -
Its really up to you if you want to pay all that premium for the fancy keyboard and the fancy alien head. Be happy with whatever you buy. As long as you're fine with spending all that extra money for a little aesthetic value, just do it.

check here for other options besides the M17

What Ricky said. Thats one of the best and most straight forward guides on NBR. Thats an old version of the list though. The ASUS W90 should be added to that. It is definitely one of the tops right now. As long as you can handle a 18.4 in screen on a 2+ inch thick monster (check it out on XoticPC).
You might also want to fill out that "What notebook should I buy" FAQ and post under a new thread so others might be able to find it and help you (and not think we're only badmouthing AW in this thread).
One last thing. If you want to fell a little better rethinking your choice of AW, check this thread: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=357706. $5500+ for a system you can get for half that hurts just thinking about it. But at least he's happy. Thats all that matters. -

why is every one bashing AW? i paid 2100 for my system....only 200 more then any other Whitebook reseller and i know what i paid for and what i got. this thread needs to be closed it serves no purpose any more other then to bash AW. He has got his information and where to go
-
I read the first 3 pages. Wow, they were the most uneducated 3 pages I've ever read on NBR. (Cept for hep and whizzo)
Mr. Moo, a "whitebook" is a barebones laptop that usually only comes with the GPU, Wireless and the vital components. The HDD, CPU, RAM, OD and so on can be put in by the consumer, which in the end saves money and offers endless configuration options.
The OCZ Whitebook is a name given to the Arima W840 DI, simple as that. Whizzo is right in his definition of a whitebook and you can stop pretending you know so much about it.
Seriously, I long for the old Alienware NBR days, where most m15x owners helped tweak and mod, where almost everyone was adept with computers.
Nowadays, most people here are just m17 owners, all feeding off E-Wrecked's work.
Oh yeah and seriously:
-
sadly i haven't went to school yet so i do not have as much knowledge, but at least i am trying to help unlike some one else just bashing every thing else. I am learning every day so just deal with it -
I try not to be rude, but MR.Moo, I see you post a lot. Most of those posts have little content or are incorrect in their content. There is absolutely nothing wrong with ignorance - we all start there, and there are many subjects not related to computers which I am very ignorant in, for example - cars. But I wouldn't make attempts to help people on a car forum. If I had interest but not knowledge in cars, I would sit back and take in the knowledge of others. I'm sorry that this post is directed at you, but I am king of just echoing the sentiments of plasma. It's not just the AW subforum, all of NBR has transformed in the past few months - there are more and more people who post a lot but don't actually know what they're posting about, which ends up with a lot less quality content. I've noticed it a lot, I know some other members have noticed it as well. It's just kind of sad. Understand I'm not talking down to you either, it's good advice for everyone - if you don't know the answer, don't try to give one.
-
ok thank's ?!? and gratz on 4 k

I hardly post in the main forum now, and usually stick to the off topic section, where new people tend to stay out of.
I wish there was a way to make sticky names size 10 font, to reduce the clutter in the forums. Just some highlights:
" Where online to buy Asus laptop " in the Asus section
" Are those temps normal ? " in the Gaming section
" New Laptop... What kind of games can I play? " in the Gaming Section
Not to mention the countless "OMG M17 HALP" and "When 4870 come out" threads in this subforum.

chaz: close or move thread please. this is becoming more in the realm of "what notebook should i buy" catagory and is becoming an AW bashing thread.....
please close or move...thx. -
-
Because all I can see is just sound advice. -
True as that may be, alot of post here talked about problems with AW and how they charge alot more for there looks. It is true but we knew what we were buying n it does look like bashing when you get 20 people say pshh that's stupid why buy AW you save here etc. He did get helped in the end and got guides on what to get so I guess it all worked out.
Just my thoughs
(remeber the chucks plasma, remember the chucks...) -
then it went on from there to a bash Mr. Moo moment. while his posts may seem off topic or not-so-understandable, he has as much a right to post as anyone else here. he owns an AW m17, and to be fair, he has posted personal and valuable information for others looking into the unit.
and what does someones desire to purchase a unit via credit have anything to do with this? why attempt to make financial decisions for someone else when you no not of their situation.
it went far off, and far left. that is why i posted what i did. -
Fair enough.
Once Chaz finds this thread, I think that temp ban is finally coming -
Hang in there Moo not all your posts were in vain!
Too many are too lazy to do the research, you will be surprised what you find while doing it. Something that lazyness will never know. -
