I don't remember where I read it. But the new machines might be full plastic( or carbon fiber) to reduce weight. Will have a look around later to find the source.

I highly doubt that. Carbon Fiber just cost too much. If they want to reduce weight, go back to magnesium covers and not the thick (although awesome) aluminum.

There's no way (yet) to mass produce carbon-fiber. It's all still hand made.

ie.. there's 0 chance of it being applied in a mass production market like laptops.

The new AW design will have the screen positioned "slightly advanced" from the back of the chassis...just like the new XPS 15 & 17 notebooks that AW will rebranded off of.

Carbon fiber isn't expensive, not as much as it once was. I know all to well since I deal with it all the time and replace it all the time, I fly RC models and they're blades, frame sides etc. are Carbon Fiber. Every time you crash you gotta replace it too. :p

I get the impression the 3Gigs VRAM listed in those specs are supposed to suggest dual GTX 460M or 470M with 1.5Gigs VRAM each.

Yes, I know it's not really 3Gigs total but this is Dell we're talking about.

The xps line never died. Its image just changed. It went from top of the line gaming to better than the inspirons but cheaper and weaker than alienwares.

And they will not segregate them by video card like that is it is too limiting since the 2 lines are far from comparable

Needs more lights and an Alienhead?

Maybe...but probably not totally fake. There's been hints and supporting info for a couple of months now (from on the the internets and from Dell reps on NBR) that Dell would be doing something with the XPS line.

creating competition within your own company is a no-no, and this isn't just competition either, it's a curb stomp to the entire Alienware line-up.

Dell had great cooling and an unlocked BIOS overclocking on the XPS 17...maybe even before Alienware did. At least I know the XPS 17 had it while the M17 didn't (without the Whitebook BIOS). Not sure about earlier models?

Makes you wonder what Dell has planned for Alienware don't it?

When you say xps 17 do mean mean the XPS M1710 and M1730? And as for plans with Alienware, they did not buy it for the engineers....they bought it for the name, they will keep it alive.

I read through the whole thread on the website Phinagle posted, I sounded like fake, but a user from Dell_France have posted several times, confirming the rumors..
The specs are quite monstrous, I'm curious.

    Yes.

I haven't seen anything about it one way or the other in the rumors for the new XPS 17.

Allegedly there's support for new XPS models coming from a Dell rep that frequents NBR too. Bill_B doesn't confirm any specs though.

I had the m15x with skull cap and it cannot compare to the solid and sleek build of the M1xx designs. It was plastic with weak support and ran hot compared to this amazing line.

I broke into Alienware's HQ and stole their next design plans for the next M17x:

they're thinking about bringing back the skullcap design,....

I want an M11x, but every time I look at the back of one I see a pokemon with a little alienhead in the middle of it's forehead.

I think it's named mewtwo, or something cat sounding like that.

I would rather it had a back that was identical to the M15x & M17x, or a true skullcap design like the pre-dell alienware systems. The mix of the two just seems wrong.

They can probably milk the current designs for a few years before they start looking dated.. For me, I love the current (AP) designs.. Awesome! Just the right mix of dark and sharp.. Not too glitzy or show-offy..

If it was a car it would be lamborghini.. Next design=aston martin :)

You can get an expresscard mouse that would store in the laptop, other than that I would say the mouse is pushing it. A thumb drive is doable.....
