Company says it will be great actually because they can support 36 countries instead of 6 now... closing miami and ireland down and moving in with dell. Not sure I like this but in the end its all about the product which apparently a new one is on the way. See extremetech for memo etc

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Alienware merge with HP a while back? Or am I thinking of something else?

Alienware was bought over by Dell.

    Not merged.

And Voodoo was bought over by HP. Once again, not a merger.

    This sucks
I loved how I received my alienware desktop 10 day early because it came from ireland. I also loved how the support was actually in the UK not some remote Indian village.
It was bad enough them being taken over by Dell in the first place, now this is...

I also dont see why them serving 36 countries rather than 6 will be better for them, the vast majority of orders will still come from those 6 countries.
Bleh, gotta sort out signature XD

I guess you don't know that Dell got their factory in ireland too?
So this change will not affect anything.

And support is not done by "some remote indian village". You get through to the support desk in YOUR OWN country when calling during business hours.
And that "remote indian village" you are talking about does the job just fine if YOU are able to explain yourself properly.

Don't bash things you actually know nothing about :).

Yeah, I thought Dell just bought a piece of Alienware? Dell makes a lot more money because Dell is used almost everywhere, in schools and businesses. I see Dell everywhere I go, I have not seen too many Alienwares around. Lol I dont know what I'm saying really...great

    cheers

I think, in regards to customer support, customers prefer hearing their dialect spoken as closely to their own as possible. At least that seems to be the big complaint.

I still say consolidating resources and gaining access to Dell's resources is a win/win for AW.

Your logic is a bit off. AW will still be servicing those same 6 countries so they're not losing any sales in those countries they're just gaining more countries to sell computers in.

So if they averaged selling 500 computers a year in those 6 countries they're still looking to continue averaging 500 computer sales a year in those 6 countries except now instead of representing 100% of AW's yearly sales those 500 sales may represent only 95% of AW's yearly sales because they're selling additional computers in those 30 new countries.

And selling more computers is better for them. ;þ

I think having access to Dells resources will be a great asset for AW. Perhaps in future this will reduce the amount of systems having to be sent back to the mothership and will enable technicians to be able to do home visits for repairs etc...

When you finance through Alienware you are actually using Dell Financial Services. The DFS support I've talked to have all been Indian, and it's a royal pain. I *hate* having any customer service outsourced.

I'm not a American bigot, but d*mmit, I want to speak to someone who can speak English!

In the UK finance is provided by a company called V12 which as far as i could see has no links with Dell. V12 also provide finance for ROCK laptops.

The reason more Alienware's aren't sold. Besides the price (which I'm totally willing to pay for) it is because MANY people have NEVER heard of them. When I show people my m15x or Aurora Desktop they LOVE it! But the first question is always, Who makes that? Oh Alienware....Never heard of them before. Ask around and I'm sure you will come to the same conclusion. Dell helping to increase the AW brand's recognition isn't a bad thing. As long as they keep their names separate enough to evoke a high end image. Look what HP did with Voodoo, stripped the name, plastered it all over their products, and raped Voodoo of what made them great.

I agree. Wherever you go the first question is "Who makes that?" They get even more surprised that is a company owned by Dell.

Yeah, it's definitely a smaller market for enthusiasts. The upside of being will Dell is that Dell is now linking Alienware laptops from their main XPS site. Hopefully access to Dell distribution channels will enable them to get video cards in stock someday =)

Alienware is definitely profitable. I think it's safe to assume Dell's upcoming XPS 18 will also be badged for Alienware.

I think AW could benefit from more global recognition, as long as they keep it AW and not just rebranded dell products.

Yeah, and it's not just overseas either. A lot of people intha states have never heard of Alienware. I think it would be good if A.W. shelled out however much money is needed including leveraging the clout of Dell, to be first in line with the parts suppliers. Step up their R&D department and be firs to provede new tech. with good drivers etc.

I think a lot more eyes would be turning to A.W.

I think you're going to see a tight integration of the AW and Dell product lines. Think Audi and VW. Same basic cars, different branding and bling.

i think not. dell will do the budget, business and "style" computers, AW will focus on the performance/gaming sector.

You're doing great representing the smart ones. ;)

This is due in part to the fact that AW used to pride itself as a boutique brand, and its prices were beyond the typical consumer's budget. You would still see it in computer and hardware magazines, but the typical consumer would not pay very much attention to it outside of oohing and ahing and the pretty (taste is subjective) models on display. Thus, AW did not advertise as widely as mass consumer brands would/did. The current line, i.e. M15X and onwards have dropped in prices drastically, and this has probably helped to increase interest and sales in AW.

Just look at the posts in the AW forum pre- and post- the M15X, M17X, M17.
2004-Jan 2008 is about 50 pages worth of forum threads. Jan 2008 to May 2008 is about 50 pages, after the release of M15X, news of M17X and etc. And approximately 150 pages in less than a year from May 2008.

Seriously doubt it. Alienware laptops will still be designed by Alienware it will just be manufactured, sold, and supported by Dell. We'll likely see refreshes on the m15x and m17x or completely new 15" and 17" chassis with new tech....what we'll see from a Dell XPS 18 will likely be more like the HP HDX 18, the Toshiba Qosmio G50, or the Sony AW.

There is plenty of room in the market for an XPS entertainment line and an Alienware gaming line without them being overly competitive. And even if one line loses a few sales to the other Dell still makes money so I doubt they'd mind.

I believe the XPS is going in the direction of the HP HDX. Alienware on the other hand will become Dell's primary high-end brand. So, I think they'll have a full line of their own notebooks ranging from 15 inch to 17 or even 20" (hey, I'd buy it :D).

If youre a gamer and youve never heard of Alienware, then youre not a gamer. I remember alienware when I was just a little kid and got my first computer, which was a piece of crap compaq. lol i played doom and roller coaster tycoon on it. Haha and diablo, and whatever else was out back then haha. But I guess only true gamers deserve to know about Alienware, if everyone started getting alienware, then it just wouldnt be the same...or would it?

I dont know, what im trying to say, im really just saying crap off the top of my mind. Ive never seen an alienware, but ever since I could remember, i have wanted one. Now that I actually make ok $$ im going to get one, and play every game i want at ease. haha

Dear Imperial Dark Lord Michael Dell,

Please merge Alienware's Tech Support with ... say... your XPS or business class lines and offer TRUE on-site tech support that fixes the problem in 1-2 days. Do that and i MIGHT POSSIBLY THINK of purchasing an AW laptop again. And i thought i would NEVER say that.

I really wish I could, but you see, I'm hiding from a group of thugs. They call themselves the initial conditions. There's not much I can do: if I leave to return to my time-domain, they create havok with my digits. They, however, are very easy to deal with where I am now...
