Hello All,
I was informed by ALienware Technical support agent today via special call he made to say overclock option is not supported by them.
I told him,
a. Dell website advertises overclockable to 1.73Ghz (it does on american websites)
b. The whole internet is with the news that it is covered under warranty.
c. Its a manufcaturing defect on my computer and if you dont support it then who does?
He just repeatedly said the same sentence as it has been told to him by his manager. He was probably Russian (by his name ) as he was struggling with his English.
The Problem:
Since bought new (40 days) it has never been able to pass the OS screen when the overclock option was selected. Sometimes it never switched on display, sometimes it hanged at the Alienware logo, sometimes it hanged at POST.
I have tried re-installing OS's(all kinds), I tried clean install after enabling overclock but the system hangs while copying files in DOS.
Although it is a manufacturing defect, the technician doent like that word and wants to still call it technical ffault and wanted to replace the motherboard. Then he called in after 3 days to inform me they dont support overclock option.
I am in a fix. Any suggestions?

That sucks.
If it has had the same problem since you got it, why did you wait 40 days to bring the issue to Dell's attention?
If you had contacted them within the first couple of weeks, you could have returned it for a refund. -
I was a sucker.
There is another case still going on with them about it being advertised as 4GB ram but when I ordered the invoice mysteriuously got changed to 2GB. This I have been complaining from the day I got the laptop and I was not paying much attention to having it checked technically thoroughly.
Its turning out as though I am going to end up with this laptop eventually with 2Gigs (I was learning to live with it) but it is defective as well!
At first they said they will replace the motherboard(within the 28days) to which I said I will think abt it cos I was hoping to concentrate more on the 4gigs ram. The technician got back to me with this info.
Just got off call from Alienware Sales and they said they will email me confirmation that the overclocking is supported by DELL warranty.
Lets see what I can do with that info -
Its documented in the maunal so its an allowed feature in my opinion:
OverClock
Allows you to enable or disable CPU bus clock Over-Clocking.
Disabled: CPU bus clock is 800 Mhz.•
Enabled: CPU bus clock is 1066 Mhz
Page 49, Chapter 3, Advanced
No warnings against it.

I'm lucky, mines been OC sinced day 1 and trrouble free. I just have the SU7300 with standard 2GB RAM in mine and fitted an Intel SSD drive. -
I hope that helps. My fingers are crossed that you just initially got a bad batch of reps.
Its crazy how all over the place Dell's customer service is. Sometimes they bend over backwards, and other times they seem to take joy in not providing help. -
Thanks psikey, I wonder y I was the unlucky ones to get a defective laptop worst part is I wont be able to ask for a refund as I have sold the Alienware gaming mouse that was forcibly sold with the laptop.
...and I heard horrible stories about the repairmen leaving scratches all over the alienware after mobo replacement as such. Besides I dont want a repaired laptop, cos I paid for new. -
I was actually pleased about the mouse as I have a bluetooth mouse for general use but the Alienware one is excellent for gaming. Only paid £709 for mine including the mouse & upgraded SU7300 CPU

Eh, small world, I'm just down road from you in Sheffield
-
Its the same one I ordered only it cost me 691 quid as I used EPP DELL website.
Also I wud much rather prefer orochi razer bluetooth gamng mouse which i will buy. -
Yeh, I ordered before reading about the EPP code & it had already entered manufacturing so not worth the hassle for the extra saving considering all the other reductions/offers I'd got. I'm not a student but did look like anyone could get it.
