Did you look to see if a module was removed? What version of the OS do you have?

Sorry to hear about this, but you should have taken it out before you sent it in for repairs. Stuff like this can happen...

depends. a 32bit OS will only recognise around 3GB. a 64bit will see all the RAM you can throw at it.

Im thinking about opening it to check if its the orignal ram I put in myself, does anyone know if it will say how much each stick is on the ram itself? I remember putting in 2x 2gb sticks and it showed on windows that i had 4gb but the alienware tech i spoke to said that windows would only show 3 since thats how much it uses... i def remember it used to say 4gb

OS it is, can't believe they would rob you of ram, there are to many good 2gb of ram laying around the shop as it is. ;)

    Yes-3gb is possible with a 2gb and 1gb Stick.

As for the OP, Vista still should display 4gb if that's what's installed. It Can only address slightly over 3gb of it though. But it WILL still display it, although I believe earlier releases of Vista didn't, so be Sure you completely update Vista first.
