I want a 17 R4 so bad since I love the design but I just can't bring myself to ordering one after hearing the bad reviews and seeing all the problems you guys are having.
I just don't understand why a laptop this size needs to run hotter than laptop's with a smaller chassis. Does Dell just not care enough? Do they not know that there laptop's could easily run 10-20 degrees cooler if they just designed a decent thermal system?
Bottom line. Do you guys see Dell fixing with the next Gen Alienware's or will it continue to be plagued with problems?

Honestly I don't really see that happen. For some unknown reasons companies want to press highend hardware into a thin case, it's annoying.
If you want an alienware but don't want to deal with the high temps, just get an Alienware R4 from 2012, get an I7 - 3940mx, 16GBram, SSD and slap a GTX 1070 into it with a 330W PSU. -

Also what board issues are you talking about, I had a 2012 model until 2016 and know plenty of people who still have one and never faced any kind of issues yet. -
To the OP, You get 2 options - Form or Function.
Form - Alienware with all it's metal chassis but plagued with hybrid battery crap, Gimped Power and B$ Heatsink lottery for 2 OEMs, Worst Tripod and a lot more, for what ? Just Plug and play and don't expect anything in return, Forget upgrades, it's all BGA trashware now.
Function - get an MSI 16L13 or Clevo Socketed machines with custom BIOS free of all cancerware gimp locks and MXM + Socketed modules to help you maintain the HW easily and perhaps upgrade too, If you have a Clevo I can expect them have Volta with same MXM chipset design, Bonus you get to OC without any issues or workarounds and keep it cool as well and no tripod mess. Plus the biggest news is that Q4 2017 the standard MXM 3.0b chipset versions of RX580 / 1070 / 1080 are coming from Eurocom perhaps at 10% loss of perf due to MXM3.0b TDP requirement and cross compatibility on older machines since new MXM parts have extra power connectors that compensate that.Last edited: Sep 19, 2017
