I purchased a used m17x and it has Vista installed. The original owner who never bearly used this system never upgraded to windows 7, provided me with the windows7 upgrade option key, but when I went to www.windows7upgradeoption.com. This was posted:
"As indicated on the Microsoft Offer Forms, the last day for ordering Microsoft program upgrades was 28 February, 2010. The Microsoft Offer Forms are now expired and all eligible customer orders have been shipped."
So how do I go about upgrading to windows 7. I do have the windows7 upgrade booklet which has what looks like a key for windows 7. So am I SOL now? Can I go to alienware and purchase a windows 7 version for my M17X?
Thanks!

All you need is the CD's and your key. Borrow a friends CD and use your key and see what happens. It doesn't matter what version the CD is, as all versions are on every CD shipped (x32 vice x64, Home, Professional, Ultimate etc.)

i highly suggest getting an extended warranty, especially with high end laptops.

Typically the warranty is non-transferrable between owners, but worth trying anyways.

i'd always thought that you can transfer the warranty, with these newer dell systems. oh well doesn't hurt to ask.

I am actually in the market for windows 7 that ships with the M17x. If anyone has one and is willing to sell please let me know! Thanks! -
why do you want the windows 7 that ships with alienware? a clean install of windows 7 is much faster and better than the windows 7 that is shipped with the laptop. The windows 7 CD that ships with Alienware laptops can only be used if the recovery partition is still on the hard drive. I've tried to install Alienware windows 7 without the partition and it does not work. Your best bet is to buy a Windows 7 key from Ebay for $70 and download windows 7 from microsoft.

In another post I was inquiring a way on how to get a second HD caddy for my M17x. Well today I decided to call Alienware. After waiting for 20mins a operator came on the phone and got my info and said he would have a tech call me back. Around 8pm a tech did call and I told him that I was tring to get the 2nd caddy and a windows 7 license. After looking up my info, he helped me transfer ownership(something I have been waiting weeks for) and went ahead an ordered my HD caddy, so I will have it on Monday of next week(free of charge). And he is calling me tomorrow to help me get a legit copy of windows 7 which I will have to pay for. After this experence I will always buy dell. They have excellent customer service!
