aside notebook and desktop lineup refreshes, could "big news" be the introduction of an alienware pc gaming 'box' to perhaps compete with new gaming consoles à la ( or maybe even in partnership with) valve's steam 'box'?

Ties in quite nicely with the Haswell launch date: Intel Haswell release date confirmed for June | News | PC Pro
-
Hhhmmm looks like intel is playing the Microsoft game with manufacturers, "if you want ultrabook name, add widi to the laptop". I can see this actually hurting widi, for example in Australia, if one goes to a shop and asks for widi or wihd enabled receiver, he will be met with blank stares, pretty much same for pc shops and businesses. Suddenly throwing widi in new ultrabooks with no compatible tv's/receivers in the market is going to get annoyed customers and not to mention an added expense for those who do not want/need widi/wihd.
-
Finally, I've been waiting for this...
-
Told you guys. Lets see if the rest of the rumors hold
-
2) !!!!!!!! Finally! (Maybe even a 16:10 option according to the source forum)
3) Are the 7xx series based on Kepler or a new architecture?
4) Next generation of integrated cards ought to help battery life (not that it really mattered...)
5) While a new touchpad would be wonderful, I really hope they don't go the single button Apple direction... -
1) Magnesium alloy was what was used in the M17x R1 and R2, internally. The whole thing was then wrapped with aluminium plate.
2) Agreed.
3) Initially at least, the 700 series will be a Kepler refresh, yes.
4) Maybe marginally, but where you'll really notice it is Haswell. This will be a massive jump. Obviously you won't notice it while browsing, but one of the big changes with Haswell is that it will actually completely turn off cores and parts of the die that aren't in use, rather than just clock them back.
5) Also agreed, though some are actually really nice. I owned a Samsung series 7 notebook for a while, and the clickpad on that was actually a wonderful experience to use, though it did take a day or so to get used to, and after that felt very natural. So much so that I found a traditional touchpad clunky (and still do) after that.
That said, I'm still calling BS with this until I see proof. While they are the things a lot of people have been calling for for a long time, I don't see it happening. We've seen leaked photos of one potential design for the M17x R5 already, and there didn't seem to be a matte screen. That said, with the M17x R3 (I think) launch, there were a lot of pre-launch rumours going around about a matte screen, and this was true - There was a matte panel under the glass, just like every other Alienware out there. -
Nothing in speculation threads can be taken seriously. It would be impossible to build a machine that incorporates the features on every person's wish list. The more manufacturing and spec variations there are, the more difficult (and expensive) the manufacturing and supply task becomes. Just about every Alienware laptop made from the M17x R1 forward has been an awesome machine overall. The people that say they will only buy one conditionally based on it having an option for A, or feature B, probably turn out to be some of the biggest flakes and the least likely to buy a machine equipped according to their personal preferences.
-
Looks like i'll need to return it once I get it.
EDIT: I was able to cancel my order. Thanks fellas for posting this thread. I would have been upset knowing I just bought a system and a new one appeared shortly after my return window. :hi2: -

Interested to see what Alienware has to show. This R3 of mine is starting to show its age in some games so it might be time for an upgrade.

Could "Big News" be a M20x in our future?
I don't think they'll get rid of the M18x, but I'm totally guessing. If people buy the M18x at the depot and resell them, you'd think Dell should be able to make money on it as well to keep it. About a month to go. -

Besides the usual suspects I am also hoping for somethin really mobile like a tablet (like the razer one, but nice) or a new m11/12/13x
Since I already own a nice desktp PC I would like something nice and really portable -
I really wanted at one point the M18x. Then I realized the X51 was the better fit for me as it's just as portable and you can hook it up to any TV via HDMI. I'm hoping for upgraded GPU maybe GTX 760/770 and SLI.
-
The trouble is, you have to connect to a TV or you have no display. No TV, no workey. Plus, the M18x severely outperforms the X51. The target performance for the X51 is to achieve a minimum of 30 FPS to be like a console with PC attributes, so it is not a super-duper high output system. But it is still way better than any console ever will be.
-
Please tell me it is an m11x refresh (or m12x, works for me)
-
Forget the M12x. Ditch the M14x and m17x and let's have M13x and bring back m15x and then keep m18x.
M18x for max desktop power, dual gpu etc..
M15x for desktop power and slightly portability
M13x for portability and still be able to use as desktop
Make sure all three offers Aluminum or Titanium or Magnesium or whatever that gives that cold metal feel. Ditch the damn plastic and that rubberize coating. -
-
-
Imagine the power they could squeeze in if they removed the CD drive from the proposed M13x and M15x.
With switchable CPUs and GPUs it would be a sure fire winner.
On the other hand, anything smaller wouldnt work as competition from a tablet soaked market would be too intense.
I also dont see an Alienware tablet anytime soon either.
Truth be told, it'll probably just be the line we have now but revised into slightly thinner machine chassis with the usual 10 to 15% performance increase. -
-
I have my own theory. The Alienware reputation was not built on compromise. It was built on dominance and filling a niche for customers that value performance above all else. There are plenty of compromise alternatives. Some of the highest spec options available from competitors are similar to mid-range to low end Alienware products, especially the laptop lineup.
Maybe they think it best to get back to basics and return to what made them famous in the first place. I could be wrong, but that's my theory. A business philosophy built on slogans like those above doesn't cater to compromise. And, personally, I am super glad it does not. They have very little competition in their most potent laptop models with the highest specs. -
But agree that we will surely see slimmer chasis and 10-15% performance increase, sigh just evolution and no revolution
But m11x was a freaking awesome laptop, loved mine to bits, the only laptop i miss -
-
I wish I could. I just Googled images and selected smaller ones for the post. I would like to have most of them (especially the first 4) in 1920x1080. I like all of them, but I think my favorite is the thermonuclear bazooka, LOL.
-
Screw it, I am gonna spend some time making these from scratch, not sure on the font though, rest should be ok.
-
That would be awesome. I look forward to seeing how they turn out.

Usually how long does it take for it to be available for order after the announcement?

Dell Bill has said before that the M11x was axed because of M14x sales.
-
If we can only get 2% viewers of a really great idea to promote it on IdeaStorm when it costs them less than 5 minutes of their time, think how much harder it is for a product to be successful when it requires spending money. -
come on tri sli with dual 18 inch screens for us M18x fans!

Personally, I'm hoping for a Haswell R4 with an aluminium chassis, matte screen, and sub-woofer. Give me these things, and I will be happy.
-
Do you guys think we'll get some more hints before June 10th? :hi2:
I'm really hoping for some X51 luv. -
one things for sure. Anyone who is into laptop gaming is excited about this whether it turns out to be poop or not

darn right i check this forum on the daily to get the scoop and chit chat lol even my mom asks if the line up is out (i showed her some pictures and she like it too)
you hear that AW my mom is on your jock!!!!!!! -

Lol, I am pretty interested too, they have been at the forefront of offering everything possible in a mobile platform.
-
Prediction:
I'm betting a more sleek(read: Samsung-like) chasis with a much more smooth black cover without bumps. I'm also going with the rumors of AW axing the M18x, along with the M14x (why else would they be having big deals on both of these right now?). I think that they will keep the M17x but stretch the edges of the screen as much as possible. I think the M15x and M11x are both coming back with the remodel too. -
another question do new revisions have more issues than say one thats a little more aged? for example r1 was rough but r4 more polished? -
steviejones133 Notebook Nobel Laureate
They have big discounts because they want to get rid of older stock to make room for new products - they do it year after year when new products are about to launch.
-
Part of the problem with speculation threads is that not everyone offering speculation has been around year after year. Many have not been Alienware customers over a period of time, and they really don't know what should be expected if history repeats itself. And, there are those that have dreams about what they think would be awesome, but sometimes those dreams can be unrealistic.
-
People wanting Tri SLI systems, or water cooling, for instance.
All we can safely assume at this point is that all the laptops will have Haswell CPUs, and 8000/700 GPUs (rebrands as they are). -
Yeah, any true enthusiast would give their right pinky finger for that and pay a lot for it, but those are unrealistic expectations. Society is becoming too satisfied with mediocrity to expect that level of extreme performance. And, that dilemma applies to more than just computers. Instead, it seems the masses are happy with "sort of" good performance, and sometimes even far less is "good enough" for them. It's really sad to watch.
This little bugger...
No matter how much you hope it will, it just can't. MEH!!...can't hold a candle to this bad boy.

oh wait a minute.. there is no reason one can not dream...
its the dream killers that say we are asking for to much that hold us back with companies like dell..
What do you think a company sees when people are like ..oh ho hum ill be happy with the basics.. new cpu.. rebranded gpu.. same old memory ..oh ho hum..
they see that they can serve up the same crap over and over and until people are like all right enough or give us some thing new or im jumping ship.. then they drop some thing big..
People that dont want that performance should never bash or comment on ( how its over kill..or to much) who are you to say that its to much or over kill? If you are never going to use it?
Now here I come along ( hey hoping for tri sli from the worlds leader in innovation in gaming laptops and desktop replacements.. yay dual screens.. or even water cooling)
If im willing to pay for those features.. what am i hurting by bringing it up? and i find it appalling that really no one else is wanting to push the envelope on this.. with a new build with all the advancements we have seen in the past..
so with that said .. dual screens is not far fetched.. if a start up company out of alaska can pull it off then why can alienware? and why is tri sli so far fetched? we have had sli for how long now?
if form factor is an issue for you.. then if some thing like im suggesting is released then dont buy it! but im sure plenty of people will even the naysayers that are talking about settling for the bare minimums on a new set up..
I for one want to push the bar on what can be done with these machines.. but if every one is like oh no your asking for to much then we will never see those game changing improvements that we want to see.. -
Well by that definition I'm not a true enthusiast (and happy with that fact). I'm all for performance, but I want quality as well, and that's where I feel Alienware have been slipping. Even then, they weren't the greatest to begin with. To be honest, my perfect laptop would be something like a Precision M6600 with a GTX 680M. Better build quality (the only thing that might match it would be the M18x), better cooling, a matte IPS panel, the list goes on.
Give me something that screams performance and quality without all the glossy G4M3R crap and I'll be all over it. I'll even tolerate the ridiculous amount of LEDs (because lets face it, even I loved the sight of my M17x R1 lit up in green every now and then) given I can turn them off, or just fiddle with them if I'm in the mood.
