I'm waiting on my new Alienware 17 and checked out a few "unboxing" videos on YouTube and realized, no longer do Alienware systems ship with cool stuff. When my son bought an M15x years ago it came with a hat, a couple of stickers, a mousepad and a really great leather bound book of instructions. When he got a M17x R4 it came with a mousepad and I believe another hat. Looks like the 17 I'm getting comes with out any cool stuff like that at all.

Part of the times unfortunately.

Yeah my 17 came with absolutely nothing. I have 2 mice pads from previous exchanges and the cloth cases that they came in but the new system came in nothing , no cases, no hats, no stickers no nothing.
-
The systems are not as special as they once were. It's called save a quarter here and a dollar there. Same as the systems are not as customizable as they once were. Sad

Tis the end of an era. I liked the hat and the mouse pad.

The thing is they are not free to make, I have my own hat and high quality mouse mat and most of them will usually sit in the box, i'd rather have all the effort into crafting the hardware and then the packaging to keep it safe.

I don't believe there is any troll hating, as you say when times get tuff companies will and do cut back. Still a great product difference is we have to now upgrade and make it better ourselves. And they are upgradeable takes some work and a lot of research.
Love the systems going to keep my Area 51 even if I have to plant daisy's in it..It was fun getting those little extras that use to come with it. Oh well times change but there never will be a system like these.

I do miss those out of the box things as that was part of the excitement of buying an alienware. But what really gets me is the feature cuts. Less features, same price. That isn't cool with me

I do miss the extra stuff. It was cool to get stickers, mouse pads, manuals, etc. It made the unboxing an "experience" and not just a barrier between you and your Alienware. Anyone can put a laptop in a box, but when you have hats and other cool stuff, specifically for you and your system, it changes everything.alienwolf likes this. -
Yeah, I miss all that stuff, too. I agree with Dan Dan about the missing features, but all of it matters to me. As the song says, "I want it all." I actually use the Alienware mouse pads and really like them.

I miss that stuff, have a. Few mousepad a from over the years. Have a hat, ts hurt and coffee mug also. I miss the sleeves most of all they use to ship them in.
-
Yeah, the sleeves are awesome, too. I always use the cloth sleeve, then place it in the Duragadget sleeve, and then put it in my backpack. Overkill, but it helps a 2 year old beast stay looking like new.

I bought several new ones from Ebay. Every so often you find them for sale. I try to pick up Alienware stuff Keyboards, mice and parts since they have stoped making the Area 51 and no longer ship the extras. Kind of becoming collectable if you can find the surplus Dell sold off.

I remember the days when you got an Alienware branded Func 1030 mouse mat with your laptop, then they moved onto the cheaper alienhead ones and now nothing! All this rubbish about them having to cut back is just that - rubbish. They've increased the price and reduced what you get - the laptops aren't costing more for them to manufacturer, the only thing that has gone up in price is the DDR3 ram, other parts - processors, led screens etc have been steadily dropping in price.

I agree with the OP, Alienware was one of the most revered brands in the industry. It was, as apple stamps it on their products, a way of life, a sign of the elite. The little steps a company takes in making a consumer feel an individual is important to brand loyalty. I still remember buying a top-of-the-line electric guitar from Ibanez a few years ago. Inside it, was a handwritten thank you note from someone in the company. I seriously loved receiving that.

Yeah, I was definitely not trying to start a troll topic for the forums, just noting how, as TFK notes, that Alienware seems to be losing or even to have lost some of their "boutique mystique." It was the little things like getting a hat or a mousepad or stickers or the leather-bound instruction book with the alienhead logo that made me (and others) feel more "connected" to the brand - It allowed us to identify as something special and feel a part of a group.

Not trying to rub salt in any wounds, because I do consider myself a fan of alienware, but....
Even my sager (bought jan 2013) came with a free laptop carrying case. Faux leather and rather cheap, but it does hold the laptop and it was free. -

. Not saying I don't miss the extras, but it helps no one not letting dell know how we feel about their brand.
