I did a thread like this for my last laptop and wanted to start another using my Alienware M17x-R4. I placed it in the Alienware section (non specific model) because I invite anyone making game videos on an Alienware laptop to join in. Newest vids will be posted 1st in the OP. Whether it's a demo, full game or just a cool scene/clip, post it up and I'll maintain the OP.

    Over 100fps on MP3 on 7970M?

    Can you do Crysis?

I've tried it both non-OC and OC'd and barely get over 40 fps...

    Please Q? :)

Edit: I have R4 with 7970M currently and have to decide whether to keep it/wait for 680M/get CFX or SLI. :)

    Showdown MP is a blast!

Afterburner is flawed when it comes to FPS. These settings average mid 40s.

I'm confused, if you have an R4 7970m and played Crysis stock and OC, what would a vid made do for your decision?

Glad to see someone else getting ridiculous FPS numbers from afterburner in MP3. I knew triple digit FPS couldn't be right. When I got my R4 AB no longer gives me FPS (grayed out :( ) so I tried Fraps - real numbers 40 - 50 FPS :)

Great idea with this thread - will be good to see some gaming vids from like machines - what capture SW are you using? Thanks.

No, I only used afterburner to OC the card to the level you have (940/1400 seems the general ballpark for stock voltage).

The on screen display video of MP3 however, it says on the bottom line that you are getting over 100 fps consistently with the settings you have - I don't know what program that is however.

Now, I ask if you can do a video of Crysis (all on Very High settings) because with an OC Fraps give an average of 30 - 40 fps which I think is odd considering that this card can push Crysis 2 out for more than 60fps (avg. 54 fps) with settings on MAX at 1080p.

I asked for this in order so I can use your results as a point of reference to see if my machine is outputting what it should - I'm new to PC gaming, consoles are dinosaurs lol! (But Crysis is like my dream game so I need more reference points on how the R4 W/ 7970M performs with it).

    Thanks dude :)

PrecisionX also since it works the same method as AB. I was reading >400FPS on my desktop and couldn't get any OSD to work on it, even fraps, then I started reading counter issues for the retail version (non steam) of the game. Didn't think much of it when an OSD actually worked on my R4, but I didn't really believe the FPS either. A youtube user (bozzoo) mentioned the bug and suggested trying fraps, and yep, 40-50. So there would be a reason to OC for MP. However, I think I'll also give up the MSAA since it's reported to be flawed while the FXAA works very, very well in this game.

Thanks man, I don't use any screen capture, I record with a cam to show actual machine & game performance. With cam flaws, it's not always pretty as screen capture, but there are no variables or excuses to actual performance.

It's the OSD of AB, but it's flawed on FPS count, we're really getting mid 40s, not >100s.

I see, but we really can't compare C2 to C1, apples and oranges imo. Your results aren't odd at all, totally expected by my experience. I have been thinking of firing up C1 on this machine just to answer the tired old question :) and you asking in the cool manner that you have. I'll do it, but without mods, maybe have it up by Sun/Mon.

Yeah, most sources I've seen say that on the 7970M MAXED at 1080P DX11 can output an average of 54fps at stock clocks... So rather than apples to oranges, I think its more apples to elephants lol.

Tbf, because I have an R4 I'm asking everyone I know on here and in person who has a 7970M card to run Crysis in order to reference point it with regards to FPS... It would be good to have our own compendium of FPS for each game at stock clocks hehe. :)

Edit: Btw what is MSAA and FXAA? Is FXAA a background program or something that is more efficient than in-game AA?

Pulling some good FPS with Crysis, thanks for the extra push to do it, cool to run around in it again.

2nd best tip anyone can give you, use the google: https://www.google.com/#hl=en&gs_nf....,cf.osb&fp=dedc35cd9db1c96e&biw=1280&bih=607

This way you don't wait around for an answer, plus it's an extensive subject.

Thanks man. Well, you hit on a game genre I'm not in to, RPG. However, I have an eye on Skyrim due to it's beauty, maybe Steam will have it on a summer sale.

Kind of personal :), but if you get a preferred account, they run deferred interest deals from time to time. You'll want to have the money as you don't want to get stuck with that 29.99% APR, but I also love these type of accounts with Amazon and Newegg, I'd rather keep as much of the money as possible until the final month, and then pay off.

    Enjoy it!

Nice one on the vid, I wasn't expecting as much footage much appreciation and rep going your way. Does patching to your version give better performance? I've had the game (DVD version) since 2008 and no matter what system I've been on it refused to patch. How did you do it?

Again, thanks man. :) What other games have you tried?

Oh, and BTW - I prefer your style of video capture than using Fraps as it gives actual real time performance indication, easy to see if you have the internet speed for 1080p video and full screen on youtube. Keep it up dude. :)

 I don't think patching is +performance, it's mostly bug fixes and MP security. I have the old fashioned retail DVD/Key and get the patches from gamershell.com

    Install this first.

    Install this last.

Just the games shown so far. I got L.A. Noire for free with MP3, haven't played yet and doubt there will be a vid for it. Lately I've just been Showdown MP and finishing SP MP3 before going MP on it (with a dash of Crysis ;)). Guess I need to see how Metro 2033 runs.

    Afterburner and HWiNFO

AB OSD takes the top by default, so I use that for VRAM usage, API (going to be there anyway) and FPS.

Then you have control (line choice) for better organization with where HWiNFO places info:

(Line 1) GPU temp : GPU usage
(Line 2) GPU Core clock : GPU Mem clock
(Line 3) nothing selected so leaves a space
    (Line 4) CPU core 1 : CPU core 2
    (Line 5) CPU core 3 : CPU core 4
(Line 6) CPU usage : CPU temp
(Line 7) nothing selected so leaves a space
(Line 8) Sys Mem usage : Sys Mem available

Thanks, I'll have a play with that. I was hoping you were using something other that AB for FPS and API as since i replaced my R3 the option for frame rate is greyed out. I've been using fraps but it looks much neater like you have it. :)

You have the green team, so Precision should make the companion to HWiNFO just like AB is for me. AB and Precision operate the same way.

EDIT: I'm not sure it will work, but give it a try.

I finally finished uploading a cut of Deus Ex HR. This is a rough, rough draft. I used Fraps specifically because I wanted to know how well the M17xr4/7970m could perform while running a game and screen recording simultaneously. I'm running an oc of 965/1500 in this video. Used Quagmire LXIX's OSD setup.

    <embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/MupGzro9-e0?version=3&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" height="385" width='640'>

Steady 60fps on maxed settings with frequent jumps well above that and vsync off just for display. Video was recorded to secondary hdd. Average FPS without Fraps is the usual +20.

Still messing with settings as the color spectrum is far off and graphical anomalies were introduced in compression and upload. Thought it was worth sharing for the curious. Hopefully I can get better at these as the days go on.

Thanks. Here's today's project, Witcher 2. Not perfect but getting better.

Spent most of the day getting the video to compress correctly. I tried to get an external recording like you do, but all I have is an iPhone 4 which only records in 720p and it's pretty tough to line up correctly with the screen. I'll keep trying though so I can get a more accurate fps reading.

I have a number of videos posted here, including a Crysis benchmark.

The Mr. Fox Channel - YouTube

I use Afterburner for capturing benchmarks and gameplay because I don't want to spend any money on FRAPS. Free is a good price.

Question for FRAPS owners... Does it reduce frame rate to some extent, or do your games and benchmarks run at exactly the same speed as when you are not capturing screen output? The only drawback I find to using the Afterburner screen capturing software is the reduction in frame rate. I suspect that is because GPU and CPU resources are being consumed, but it makes it impossible to accurately demonstrate the in-game or benchmark performance when the frame rate is lower than what it is when not capturing screen output.

From my personal experience, the frame rate will only drop while recording with Fraps. When you start to record, it will typically force a frame rate of your specified frame rate or less.

Checking out your videos now Mr. Fox. Looking good. As far as Fraps I've moved on from it now due to lack of quality and the performance hit. I'm running afterburner now and it's performing much better. I can record at full size instead of half size and the framerate loss is not as bad.

Only way to really capture full performance of the computer without losing fps is using a hardware solution like a capture card/pvr or do what Quagmire LXIX is doing and use a camcorder.

Speaking of afterburner, working on a Modern Warfare 3 video today and the performance was much better. Got some single player recorded, going to do some multi later tonight and get it uploaded. Using the 12.6 WHQL drivers now and liking them.

    ---------------------

Finally got a video finished and uploaded. Took a lot of trial and error but I think I got a decent recording using my iPhone. The multiplayer videos I shot all got bunked, so I'll have to redo that later.

Here's some single player action. I recorded the audio separately using a Zoom H4's on-board stereo condenser mics. So if you're interested in hearing what the M17x R4 sounds like in person, pop on a pair of headphones while watching this video.

Thanks for posting the link. You guys are doing some nice videos. Good job.

    Here's another new one...

    <param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/vcTUO51PJEY?version=3&amp;hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/vcTUO51PJEY?version=3&amp;hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width='853' height="480" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object>

The screen corruption that sometimes occurs with 7970M CrossFire is most noticeable in the OSD text at 2:22 (tail end of the second benchmark run).

I did another MW3 video. I actually did this the day after my last video, but Youtube wasn't letting it upload. Finally went through this evening. Anyways, I switched from the 12.6 WHQL to the 12.7 betas and had fps increase from ~60 to ~120 in single player. Multi player I get an average of 90fps.

No idea why the increase, but I thought it was worth shooting.

    <param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/vqNlsD5CHN4?version=3&amp;hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/vqNlsD5CHN4?version=3&amp;hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width='560' height="315" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object>

Yes I did. It looks like 975/1500 is my card's top oc on stock voltage. Anything above that and I start getting heavy artifacting in Witcher 2, which has become my goto game for this kind of thing.

Sounds like either a vsync thing or some bug in the 12.6 that was holding it back.

Either way one thing is for sure, the new gen of mvga's crush MW3 as expected, then again, what doesn't :)

might be relevant. EVGA just released a new version (using the same OCD component as afterburner) that fixed incorrect frame rates:

Quote from EVGA Precision page: 'Fixed framerate calculation for DirectX10/DirectX11 applications, which actively use presentation testing during rendering (e.g. Max Payne 3)'.

Maybe an interaction with the new driver triggered the same problem?

Added Skyrim with High Res Texture Pack and 2 mods, 2xMSAA, 16xAF, settings in beginning of vid. Vsync is off to see actual FPS, but game with it on.

Beat me to it. Another great video, Quagmire. I've been on video hiatus as my 7970m took a turn for the worse and started failing on me. Got a new one as a replacement, so I'm back in action.

I actually just finished modding Skyrim earlier today and am going to try getting some good footage of it tomorrow. If you're at all inclined and have some time to devote to it, I highly, highly, HIGHLY recommend installing from the STEP (Skyrim Total Enhancement Project) mod guide. It's a lot of work, but the result is absolutely incredible, and the stock 7970m runs it like a dream.

Here's a screenshot after killing the first dragon outside Whiterun:

I just missed the sunrays as they went down right when I clicked the button. Doesn't do it justice, but suffice it to say I can't put the game down now. It was a real treat to actually have to use my torch to see my way through Bleak Falls Barrow.

Looking forward to the Arkham City video! Love that game.

Thanks man! I take no joy winning a race against someone that busted their leg ;) What happened to the baby? Glad it was replaced and seemingly fast.

Skyrim is awesome, I've missed out because of my old school experience with RPG games. Skyrim is more action sandbox than anything I remember as RPG and I am enjoying it. Glad I waited for the Summer Sale. Thanks very much for the STEP link, I looked it over quickly, how long did it take you to complete? Great pic, I really do love the scenery of this game, I could spend some time just wondering around.

Looking forward to your Skyrim and other vids, please show us some of those good mods in action, might get me off my butt for modding it.

Cool, may it bring you gaming bliss!

Settings, a little Batman whoopass (OC), Robin from Harley Quinn's Revenge DLC (OC), Catwoman Challenge in Iceberg Lounge DLC (OC vs stock) and Benchmark (OC vs stock). 950x1550 OC

When the 680m's get into user hands and any kinks worked out, I hope we're going to see you doing some vids

Nice to check out. :) Thanks.
I see that no physx makes a big difference to the detail though. No billowing newspapers or leaves, no smoke that 'flows' as you run through it, they really have made good use of it. fav trick - got to a room with rugs on the floor, you can spin on the spot and wrap them around your feet - v cool effect

hah! I did remember Physx on Asylum, didn't cross my mind here. After reading your post, I went where is that, sure enough, scroll down the settings and wham, blind as a bat :)

I've got juice for it, will make another video with it enabled. Thanks for the reminder and I'll try that trick :D .

EDIT: Using the same settings, but adding Physx Normal cuts the benchmark avg in half. I'll see if there is a good balance to play this with a 7970m. I've already decided it's for my desktop going full blown settings though ;)

That's a shame. I'm running the highest option recommended for a separate dedicated gpu on my 675 and benchmark average with all other settings (ex AA) at max is 49fps (710 oc). Maybe the 675 does get an edge for a change? :)

    Yes.

What does the bolded mean, what are all your settings exactly? I'm not even going to bother with a Physx vid for B:AC on the 7970m, no matter what I do, runs like crap where Physx is used. Even NoAA, DX9 and High.

Nv will always have the upper hand on a Physx game.

How do you like it? I ordered one for mine, too. Does it have the same button configs as the console?

I don't even have an Xbox, but it would be nice not to have to set it up.

Yeah, not too clear was I? The setting is high and it says nvidia gtxxxx dedicated gpu recommended - or something like that for some reason it is corrupted:
I thought that with the high power cpu's it would cope fine but I see what you mean if I set physx to run off the cpu - poo :(

    Thanks bigT!

I'm a controller or wheel gamer, I never could get used to KBAM and I tried. The controller is very well supported in Batman. I started off a bit of a button masher, but for Batman SP, I had the fluidity down (minus that one konk on the head with the bat :)) No idea if it's set up the same way as the console.

Pic is worth a 1000 words :) Looks like MAX settings minus AA. You get 46avg with those, tough little 675
I have to relook, I don't think I had an Extreme Detail Level.

Anything <9000 FPS in that game is fail :D

Cool, thanks for the info. I prefer KBAM for shooters, MMOs, strategy games, etc., but for adventure and slasher games (like Batman - that I just picked up in the steam summer sale, Assassin's Creed, Force Unleashed, etc.), I think the controller is superior.

Thanks it's definitely worth the effort. My old 7970m started displaying heavy artifacts shortly after my last video. It looked like a vram failure. SO I called up Dell and got a new card dispatched to me the next week. It was on backorder but I was still up and running again in less than a week. So kudos to them for taking care of me.

This card doesn't oc nearly as high as the last, but it performs better than the old one at the clocks it does do, so I'm happy. And yes oh yes I loves me the summer sale! Got lots of goodies for the backlog haha.

Okay! On to the good stuff. I finished the video and I think I got lots of good stuff in it. The whole process probably took most of this week, with the bulk of the work being done in about five or six hours over a two-day period. The rest was general tweaking to get it where I wanted.

    <embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/L0T_-T5gCKE?version=3&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width='560' height="315">

Most notes are on the video page description. Some things to mention are that one of the mods installed prevents the use of MSI Afterburner's OSD. I had to create a profile for TESV in RivaTuner and disable it. I'm using another program for the FPS count. I also cap it at 60 for smoothness. Unfortunately that didn't translate in the upload because there is some small stutter that wasn't present during recording. Oh well, you guys will get the point lol. Also I do have a compass. It's just set to toggle on/off and I forgot to switch it on during the video since I keep it off most of the time.

Anyways I think I got everything you might want to see in a modded Skyrim video. Even lucked out and stumbled on a dragon on my way into Riften, so you get to see that too!

edit: I forgot to mention, if you want to get rid of that nasty compass/stamina/magicka bar bug caused by the 12.7 betas, go into skyrimprefs.ini (documents/my games/skyrim/) and change iShadowMapResolution=4096 to any other number besides 4096. 4095 or 4097 will work and keep your shadow quality up.

Outstanding vid Ithian! Thanks for the info. Looking forward to seeing how that area looks when I get there so I can compare the benefits better. I seen someone hit you with a Thumbs Down right off the bat, welcome to youtube haters ;)
