So this issue may not be anything similar to the Area 51 m15x, but I am starting to experience a case of creaking hinge on my allpowerful M17x.

Here is how I describe the creaking situation:

    1) The M17x's lid is shut
    2) I open the lid to about 115 degrees (No creaking noise, yet)- It's smooth and silent.
    3) I let the lcd sit in that 115 deg. position for about 30 seconds while I do something.
    4) I come back and sit in front of the computer, but I want to adjust the monitor to 90 degrees; So I do so.
    5) The moment I move the screen an inch it makes a creaking noise!!!!!

The noise sounds like rubbing plastic. I will not hear it if I keep moving the screen back and fourth. But I will hear it if i let the screen settle in for a sec then move it.

It almost sounds like the hinge may be too tight, and adjusting the screen will only makes it creak!

And for some odd reason, it only happens pass the 90 Degree mark!

Can anyone tell me if they are experiencing the same thing?

Would WD40 help if I can take it apart?

I just tried that out then and I'm almost certain it's a normal and healthy thing. It's not a bad creaking - as if you have rusty hinges, but I'd think that it's because of the hinges being a little tight still. I'm using a fairly new Dell Inspiron 1545 and the same thing happens. I wouldn't want to hear anything more encouraging from my notebook. Are you experiencing extraordinarily loud creaks or something of such similarity?

No the creaking aren't loud. But I would say that you could hear it in a small study room. This issue is Kinda embarrassing honestly <- especially coming form a system like this.

I noticed that I can hear the creaking and slightly feeling the creak vibration coming from behind the black plastic of the lid (the triangular plastic with the same texture as the touchpad)

Personally, I wouldn't worry about it. If it's really getting on your nerves though, maybe you'd like to take it in to your nearest computer repairs shop to get it checked out. How old is it? This often happens to new machines as they haven't been worn in yet.

This sounds like a fairly significant issue if it's commonplace with other M17x units. I just hope there's an easy fix

    haha

I still am extremely happy with my M17x....no screen issues, no hinge creak, no weak or flimsy parts, no nothing to complain about (not even the dam price lol)

Hinge creak not again :( My m15x had constant horrendous creaking but I did not care. Only annoyed me when it cracked. Some users monitors/lids where failing off... you have it easy trust me.

    I got it guy!
I striped the system completely apart and removed the LCD panel from the base.
I noticed that the creaks were not coming from the rotating hinge.
The creak is coming from the plastic part in the back ie, the plastic underneath the huge alien-head, the plastic that has the same texture as the touch pad.

what was going on is that somehow the aluminum is rubbing against the plastic when I am opening and closing it. it makes an ugly creak.

What I did was took a Q-tip and applied a VERY think layer of tri-flow along the edges of that plastic part. Now, no more creaking! I love it!

    -----

What did I learn in the entire process?
Well, I took the entire system down to its almost nothing nakedness.

In the process, I also took both my GTX280M cards out, and the fans.
I had a spec of dust inside/behind the "ALIENWARE" logo lit area. I took that apart and got rid of the dust-spec with an air canister.
I was able to trouble shoot various issues I was having a problem with.

I saw how simple the M17x was designed on the inside but so elegant on the outside!

I honestly can say that I can take and put back together this machine within 15-20 minutes and have it operate 100%!

Thanks for talking about age guys ... =P
