congrats on the purchase. what specs did you order? they usually ship it before the estimated shipping date but on some occasions such as now when there are a couple of back ordered parts they might ship it a bit later than the estimated shipping date.

Hi crricha13 and welcome to the forum.
where are you in the world, that can depend on if you get your m15 on time.
when you get time can you put your system specifications in you signature so we all know what your getting.
good luck and lastly dont beleave the phase page. -
Awesome thanks, and im putting specs in sig as we speak.
-
god bless you.
-
Just put specs in. So psyched(sp?).
-
I was going to say exactly that... I just hope you will be lucky and you will not have any problems with the M15x (isn't it weird that everyone has to get in some kind of lottery to get a good M15x? If there are any "good" M15xs anyway...)
-
Quite cool specs.
I don't know if you were informed, but you are going to have your extreme processor running at temperatures that will lead it to downclock. I'm sure AW didn't tell you that... -
I heard it can downclock, would you inform on this matter please.
-
-
just get the 2.5gig duel man.. afue people said the 2.8 downclocks ... if i does your better off getting a 2.5 and overclocking it to its thermal limit... imo.
save some cash 2..
also give me a argument why u need a 2.8 gig duel over a 2.5..
while only havening a 8800mGTX
there is not one from a gaming perspective -
well this computer will be for gaming and games such as Age of Conan and Crysis, but its not strictly for gaming, will also use for various things, and i multitask alot. so i figure faster processor would help me with that
maybe it was a noobish mistake, i will regret? -
You should have read a bit more about the M15x's list of problems. Here are some posts for you to get informed:
Thread on CPU downclocking- http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=248848
Thread on common problems with the M15x- http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=254627 -
thank you very much

Regarding the CPU, if you have the money go for it. Whether you need it or not... that's other discussion.
The problem is, right now, the cooling solution on the M15x is not enough to keep the extreme processors working without overheating and downclocking.
Some solutions were found by our friend Taco, but that's just like applying a patch over a hole, not fixing anything really.
Here you go: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=256719 -
So it seems downclocking will only happen when im for example playing crysis on full settings?
-
Looks like a great config, but I would further recommend going with the 2.6ghz or 2.5ghz vs the 2.8 because of the thermal issues some people are having. Most of the extreme processor users have reported downclocking when they ran stress testing. If you do choose to stick with that processor, there seems to be a temporary solution which is to lower the voltage settings on your processor with an application called "RMclock". People have reported success with this method but it's not an official fix and is more of a workaround.
Anyway, looks like a good config! -
CPU downclocking will occur when performing CPU intensive tasks like, Movie encoding, Music encoding, algorythm running, CAD, etc etc...
For what Newfie and Taco described, it will occur very often and in all sorts of different situations.
More... even if it will only happen on full settings, that's now what you paid for and you should not be happy with it. You are paying top money for an Extreme processor... You have the right to have a completely functional extreme processor. -
Is it a possibility that mine wont downclock?
EDIT: Also i bought the 3 year warranty, so for example if there is a fix for this downclocking would i be able to send it in to get fixed, if its such a big problem id guess they would fix it? -
Everything is possible... You should ask "Is it likely mine wont downclock?". The answer is simple and obvious "NO!".
-
After studying the links you posted, it seems everyone is downclocking, so how is it a better choice for me to change what i have?
-
I have a 2.5 processor and I haven't downclocked at all.
-
Maybe i will be lucky like you! ONE CAN ONLY DREAM!
-
Also keep in mind that you'll be getting the first of the new skullcap's and it's entirely unkown if AW has changed anything about the case to improve thermals. You could certainly chance it. As long as you're ok with the possibility of having to send it back in for related repairs. As I said though, the RMclock solution seems to be a valid workaround.
-
Most of the 2.5's reported no downclocking. It's the 2.8's that reported >90% downclocking.
-
just go with a 2.5 imo
however every one on this forum is not EVERY one..
people with no issues / unaware of issues are not going to come on this forum.. but to think just 30 or so people in the world are aware of the down clocking issues and complaining is absurd and its failry clear the issue is not massively wide spread.
just get a 2.5 or 2.6 and clock it up 2.8 if u really want the 2.8 speed.. its a much wizer option at this point esp seeing as the 2.8 can not be overclocked via multi which is the hole reason u pay a premium for it. -
:'( Crossing my fingers, and maybe the skullcap model will have some sort of fix. BRB, time to pray for better days. lol But when i think about it, every single thing i have ever bought about has been bashed, im sure its like that with everyone, but its not always how they say it to be. Hopefully this is one of those times. I guess i can just get it, play with it, if the downclocking hurts my feelings bad enough, return it?
-
@Heath - Once again, please find correct info on this topic. If you search through these forums and look through the m9750 problems, you will find almost none. The problems that you do find will have appeared once but never exactly the same.
Since 30 people have come here with similar issues, that means that this is probably spread all around the m15x and many people are having these problems who are either:
a. not noticing
b. talking to AW instead of coming here
c. coming here
Just compare the amount of threads with almost EXACT issues with the M15x to the M9750. -
-
to crricha... You won't be lucky, your laptop won't be special.
It will be the same as everyone's else. Whether most of those problems will bother you or not, that's another issue.
So, if I can suggest something to you, change your order, remove the extreme processor because IT WILL DOWNCLOCK (and you won't get any lucky with this one). While you are at it, and if you wan't to save easy money, remove the 4GB of memory and get only 1GB. Buy 4GB from somewhere else for 1/5 of the price. The same is true for the Hard Drive. -

congrats on your new system. To ease some of the pain I have never downclocking while gaming. Only time I have it is when I use cpu intensive program like movie encoding. I do have a fix just in case there are any problems but like someone said Its more of a patch. Like milcs also said we have ways to test for it. I'd be supper happy to have some with a new system that can run tests for us if you helped us out that would be great!
-
sure i will give it a shot at tests for you guys when i get it in. is your fix the one with how much voltage gets to it or something like someone else said?
-
yep thats me don't worry though I think you'll be fine while gaming I never had any problem. Although I did hear of someone downclocking while playing WoW but not Crysis (weird I know)
-
:'( wow is a game i play alot. rofl.
-
well thats just one person. if thats the problem then fix will take care of it.
-
I downclock in WoW because it's very CPU intensive. Crysis uses mostly the GPU and not the CPU.
-
Get the 2.5GHz processor and you will be fine and won't have to worry about it.

Grats, welcome to the Family

@Taco: You know what, no I haven't. Mostly waiting for you to find just the right voltage.
Plus I have the x7900, so it's not exactly the same. Been pretty busy.
@crricha: YES! FPS drops from like 45 (talking in 25 man raid combat here on full settings with this UI (but at 1440x900) to around 10 for a few seconds.
BUT! I have found that taking out the battery seems to stop the downclocking while playing. But then again I also recently cleaned the vents so that might be it too. *Shrugs* -
Well i dont do any hardcore raiding only like 10mans if a friend needs my druid for heals, mostly pvp, and twink pvp. But i am working on making vids, so i would run fraps with wow and ventrilo. So hopefully it wont happen to me haha, my UI isnt crazy like yours, jeez didnt know what game i was looking at for a minute. -
I'm pretty sure it will. I can't raid without my UI unless I did a lot of tweaking beforehand, so I can't test that. But like I said, if you take the battery out while playing it'll be ok.

Hello to everyone (old and new)!
I thought I would introduce myself on here.
I'm an AW virgin that has admired AW notebooks from afar. That is, until this week when I decided to take the great plunge and order one. Being the complete moth that I am, I was immediately drawn to the pretty lights. And because I have a glowy desktop, I decided to keep the tradition with a notebook.
I recently owned a completely specced out ROCK Xtreme 770 notebook (first ever laptop bought), but returned it because I was having problems with stuck pixels, their technical support, and their false promises. Owned it less than 9 days in total. So, I've decided to go with AW because it's not far behind ROCK with their optional components and I wanted something that looked pretty cool but wasn't as specced out as the ROCK I had, as it was EXTREME with a capital E. ROCK handled the X9000 really well without any problems, but the fan noise got annoying after a while. And it got really hot. Disappointingly, AW doesn't offer 800mhz ram in their M15x's, but I'm okay with that.
But my big dilemma is this... a day after ordering from AW, they've now updated the site and are offering the silver scullcap design as an option. When I ordered, they only had the "Ripley". So... which do I go for?? I need to decide pretty fast so I can email customer support to get my order updated as to which lild I'd like.
I've heard some reviews state that the Ripley screen was really thin and you could see the screen go funny if you were to press too hard on the other side of the lid. Would the scullcap be a better choice?
Help?! -
-
You should assume there is absolutely no difference between the two different designs, appart from the lid. So it comes down to what do you think looks best and, ONLY THAT. I prefer the Ripley... And you?
-
The 'Ripley' screams simple and unpretentious to me. Exactly the kind of lid I would like a pretentious little AW machine to have.
I think I'm more geared towards the Ripley. I think. -
Ripley is great... That's the one I have and I would never imagine myself with the Skullcap. As I want to use it in a working environment as well, the skullcap would simply be inadequate.
-
How is the keyboard on the M15x? is it an actual keyboard? Or is it like just little squares that light up?
Almost a AW owner, just ordered.:D
