Will I look like a total goon with this laptop, or is it subtle enough to take to college classes everyday?
-
I think its suitable enough (considering I own one
). If you really don't want to feel obnoxious, then you can turn off the lights, but really thats not much of a problem
-
Personally I would not, attracts attention, attracts theives, can make you look like a dork/24hr WOW player.
-
totally makes you look like a dork.
-
i dont mind the look, but personally i wouldnt bring it to class, its too much of a eye-candy laptop which sometimes isnt a plus
-
I use mine for classes and well, yeah, I'd have to agree that it does attract attention. I can't really say much about if it makes you look like a dork or not but I personally don't feel that way when I use it (I probably would if I had the skullcap version though). The reason why I say I don't feel that way is because I actually do work and take notes on my m15x unlike the other people who bring their notebook to class for the sole reason of playing games. So eh, it really depends on if you would feel like a dork if you brought an m15x to class. I wouldn't worry about what other people in the same classroom would have to think.
...though, there was a time when I took out the notebook and heard some guy behind me say "OH SICKKKK" when I booted it up. I don't know if that accounts for anything but I'm assuming that guy either thought my m15x was cool or found it appallingly gross looking (I'm pretty sure it was the former.) -
I use my laptop for some classes and just leave it sexy as it is. I know most of my peers though and usually sit near the back. Despite that, I've only gotten' compliments.
-
I use my laptop for class and yea sometimes it makes you feel like a dork but I would feel the same with most other laptops. I do get alot of compliments about my m15x, no complaints.
With the Ripley it'll be fine, turn off the lights if you have to.
With the Skullcap for sure it'll stand out more. -
I have the ripley and been using it all through my second year of college. I didn't feel like a dork at all, only gotten nice compliments about it.
-
The m15x will totally make you look like a geek and a guy that has no life behind computer games...
I got completely trashed by all my working colleagues and friends (mind you, it was at work, not at school) and absolutely everyone was making fun of me. -
in my computer science class there are 4 or 3 m15x's. in my computer science lab class there are 2 m15x's. so far no1 has said anything bad about my m15x. even the people who didnt know what AW was thought the laptop looked pretty cool because of the lights
-
I would say that it would not for several reasons. The first is that the majority of people who are non gamers dont ever know what the alienware is all about. Therefore they would not know that intense gamers usually buy these comps. The second reason is that for the most part, most people do not even notice what other people bring to class.
I would have to admit that all of the lights are eye candy though, I have had several people ask me what type of computer I have.
Is there anyway to disable the glowing head on the back of the lcd screen? -
when i bring mine (still in phase 5) in school (hs), im thinking to buy a sleeve like an attache case that it will cover the back (skullcup) when i open it.
-
Put an Apple sticker over the alien head, cool kids dig the MacBook Pro!
I was in the same boat as you, asking if the Dell m1730 was subtle enough for school (of course its not).
My school is a non boarding as well
As a boarding school so lots of country kids who ABSOLUTELY hate dorks. -
haha. I made a lot of new friends people who I've never known before I took my m15x to class! All of them are gamers too!
-
Classic posts....thanks!
So i guess the big ? is can you disable the alien head when in stealth mode? -

You can always turn off AlienFX to attract slightly less attention. If you have the lights on, you're going to get looks for sure (which some people like, and some people don't).
Myself - I always found it easier and more effective to take notes with pen + paper. -
it doesnt make you look like a dork. unless you are already a little skinny recluse loser.
all i've gotten is compliments from people so far -

I guess it depends on where you will be...
I didn't get a SINGLE (and I'm being frankly honest... not even one) compliment. But most of the people I interact with are 25-35. So they are mature adults and not the normal young person that will love all those lights.
I'm sure that in colege, it will be fine... -
Is the m15x going to make you look like a dork?
It all comes down to your own insecurities. If people already suspect that you are a dork then the m15x will definitely reinforce that image. If people think you are cool then the m15x will reinforce that image. Getting a new laptop will not suddenly transform your image in any way. -
I've had it at school for about 3 weeks now - all of my mates love it, and they know nothing about computer. I'm not seen as a dork at my school, I'm abit of a party kinda guy so I don't really have "geek" freinds - I tend to stay away from them if I'm honest. It's all okay on here cos I know none of you, and I like to help and recieve help, but in real life it kinda makes me feel out of place.
Anyway back to the point, everyone who has seen the lights (including girls) have loved it, and if I'm feeling in a nice mood I let them fiddle with the colours (one girl I know played with the colours for about 20mins).
My uncle however wasn't impressed (could be jelousy haha cos I have a better laptop than him) and the first thing he said was "****ing hell its a brick, and it looks like its made of cheap plastic, it looks like a kids toy".
Ah well, it varies. -
If you feel that insecure OP, wait foe the black colours to come in November or so. Black looks more subtle than the glossy silver.
-
Where'd you hear about these black colors?
-
I think with ripley and the lights off you'd be ok. Most of the people in my classes have HP's dells or apples (some in colors like red etc) I'm self conscious so I didn't take and still don't take my aw but I don't really need it at school anyway, tons of computers for public use and my classes mostly use textbooks and paper anyway.

I Agree, That alienhead just screams "geek". haha
-
You know, if it screamed anything, I'd say it'd scream "this person's rich" or "steal me" more than it does "geek," but hey, that's just my opinion. -

I've never heard anything about it...
-
-
well, an alienware rep said there was going to be black and we've seen black pictures leaked. Plus, at the launch of the m15x, it was actually in black ripley and the m17x was a silver skullcap.
-
It's all a matter of opinion. In the end it's us who show who/what we are, not our laptops, cars, gadgets, etc...
-
heres a teaser
looks **** sexy to me -
About the black m15x, I think it is coming since you can order the smart bay with the black color paint. The point is, why would they do them if the black option wasn't coming?

hmm, november-december?
EDIT: imo, that black glossy skullcap looks soooo awesome. That SCREAMS elegance -

I think it should be out soon (this month to end of the year max) because they have been selling the black smartbay's for a while (since July I think). I am guessing it's going to be matte black. Anyone who bought a black smart bay can confirm whether it's a glossy finish or matte.
-
nah, alienware loves its glossy paint supply right now. imo, it will definately be glossy black.
-
Well, I can guarantee you that the kid with the Toshiba Qosmio will be in line to get his lunch money stolen long before you.
-
-
You mean the X305? Lmfao, that laptop screams nerd more than a m15x ever will.
Red crayon flames? No, toshiba, no. -
that toshiba is way more flashy than the AW. the lid has a mirror finish which is way more noticeable than the glossy finish on the AW. i do agree that is more nerd than AW.
clevo is the way to go if you want to hide the gamer laptop look. -
How about not caring about what other people think and just take your laptop to class and keeping it with you at all times?
Sheesh ... this whole worrying about what others will think is getting really annoying (not to mention it's extremely superficial). -
i bring it to work and my co-workers are like "whoa! nice!" then again, i work in IT.

Well yeah, Alienware laptops really are a childish and small minded laptop.
Think of a primitive animals and their obsession with shiny objects.
But if you like it, you probably are a geek like most everyone on here (at least to some extent), however I couldn't see getting one as it just is NOT a professional looking laptop and to me a bit on the corny side. -

Without AlienFX, the m15x does not look too different from other notebooks IMO. The Toshiba Qosmio X305 is much more flashy machine, I agree - its radical lines and colors make it stand out. I don't like its style, and it feels cheap.
Am I going to look like a dork with m15x in the college classroom?
