I would like to know if it is possible to replace the M17 (Not M17x) DVD drive with a Blue-Ray drive? I asked my boyfriend but he said its not possible and i said why, on the M17 you can even replace the GPUs and my boyfriend said i'm a Raving Fruitcake...

if you could find some1 to sell you a M17 blue ray drive probably :O
-
No, the M17 one is slightly different, at least the plastic opening part, doesn't have all these writings "DVD" etc...
-
as long as the drives are all standard i would imagine you would be able to.
-
You can take off the front bezel.
It should fit other tray load drives. -
Thanks, any tutorial on how to do that?
-
No.
But it is just plastic clips/tabs the hold it in. You'll see where you need to press to get it off - just be very careful not to break the tabs. -

Don't blu -ray only benefit if you had a 1920x1080 or 1200p screen? Would it still be HD if its 1440x900?
-
-
nope BR is nice from anything over 720 vertical lines, as computer screens have more tightly packed pixels than any TV does. 1440X900 is very nice with High def ( I use a Dell D620 for alot of movie watching on the road)
In many cases any of us with BD in a laptop also output via HDMI or VGA cables to our tv's and dont bother with a BD player or even a PS3 -
-
well then Nova go grab a screwdriver, swap some bezels and prove the boyfriend HES the fruitcake. Drive swaps are pretty easy and the posted vid should have you going in no time at all.
-
300 bucks for the Read/Writer? Oh now i see why he thought i was silly
I should wait a bit, i guess?
-
it all depends on what you need to do with it. for just playing BD's its $200 or under depending on the drive you find.

What you need is a Panasonic/Mata UJ-230/UJ-230A drive (There is another SATA Blu ray drive but i cant remember the model). Around $150-$200 on eBay at present.
Am i silly?
