My m9750 has two modules of Y9530 QIMONDA 1GB PC2-5300 MODULE. My intention is to upgrade to 3gb. I have XP 32bit and Vista 32bit on my unit.

Is it ok to buy a different brand (althought qimondo doesn't really do retail) and partner it with one of the existing 1 gb module, provided they have the same specs?

    TIA

it should work okay if they have the same specs. truth be told, they don't even need to have the same specs, the faster one will just be DC'ed to the speed of the slower one.

Yes it is quite possible and easily done. Just buy RAM running at 667 Mhz and you should be fine. :)

In fact I just upgraded my m9750 from 2 GB to 3 GB this morning so if you have any questions about how to go about it please don't be afraid to ask!

    Hope this helps! :)

Is it worth it for me to buy 4gb or ram seen as vista only uses 3gb?

    Thanks.

4GB would definitely be a better option. Yes, Vista can run on 3GB but...4GB is much better. You will see a difference in the way Vista runs when you have 4GB compared to 2GB.

I understand what you're saying here, but I really don't think with really any programs right now you will see any performance difference between 3 GB and 4 GB...

Even so, if you have the $$ just go for 4 GB, because not only will it be more futureproof, but it makes sure that you have the exact same 2 GB modules for Dual Channel. :)

Yes... you can get 4 GB. But in order to do this you'd need 2 modules of 2 GB RAM.

Also, like I said before I just upgraded my m9750 this morning so if you want help with the installation just let me know. :)

In Theory that would work, but to the best of my knowledge there aren't any 3 GB modules... I know that they very recently came out with 4 GB modules but they are VERY expensive...

So really your only option is to buy 2X2GB...

Well if you get two of the exact same sticks you do get the advantage of Dual Channel performance, but really that is only a 5% or less increase in performance... :(

But if you are looking to get 4 GB I'd definitely buy two sticks of the same thing. :)

NOTE: Really 4 GB shouldn't cost you more than $75. :D Hope this helps!

One thing to note if you think you can buy one 2gb chip and add the 1gb from the laptop you would be mistaken. Becuse they use 2x 512 equal 1 gb.

Best idea is Buy set of 2x2 2gb which will be 4gb. I dont think many places sell just 1 2gb chip or 1 1gb chip.
