Yeah hydro, I had a similar experience with the JB rep that told me he can build the same machine as Dell AU cheaper. I don't trust them either, if you have to go and talk to one, I'd do some research on components, no actually, make a list, that way they can tell you straight up if they have it or not. I know my specs off by heart but I'll still make a list when I go in.

JB gets theirs from Dell for slightly cheaper since they are premade and not customizable (new units, but orders which were cancelled between being built and shipped), so they can be a little flexible if you push hard enough... but at the end of the day they are a reseller and they can only go so low because they actually paid for that unit and have to turn a profit. Dell on the other hand have discounts for 10-25% off because it costs around 1/2 of the retail price to actually build so they can afford to be more flexible.
But like i keep saying, you have to wait for the discounts. Dell is a retail store like any other, you can't just demand a discount whenever you want. You don't go grocery shopping down at Coles and say "I want 10% off all of this or I'll put it all back and get it from another store". Your lost sale is negligible to the amount they could lose if they just handed discounts out willy-nilly.
But pay attention to pricing and wait for the discounts and you can grab a great deal. I got the M11x R3 in my sig brand new from Dell for $650 after i used a coupon code which knocked off over $350. Albeit this was from Dell US, but if i had been in Aust at the time i could have used one of the 3rd party mailing services and had it shipped here for under $900 which is still a great price. -
I mean it's already weird that depending on the country you get different price for basically everything. I've checked the italian website out of curiosity, the upgrade to 7970m for the m17 r4 costs 240 EUROS, which is like 300 AU$ -_-
Here in Au they have heaps of nice offers for inspiron, xps, whatever, but I've never seen anything above 5% for AW. The 1$ monitor offer is cool and i'm actually still thinking about it. Rrp is 400$ (meh), cheapest I could find online is 299$, so I guess it should be easy to sell it for 200+$.
But it still makes me upset to see the price difference between AU and USA, and the difference in discounts as well >_< -
I bought my M11x R3 while on holiday in the US - Including the Hyper-X RAM and the Crucial M4 SSD (both which i purchased separately after ordering) i saved $1,000 compared to the Dell Au price (inc retail prices of the upgrades). That essentially paid for my ticket there -
Usa are sooo far from my common traveling routine xD And getting an AW in China\Taiwan is out of discussion, the same configuration would be 2280$ here, 3200$ there xD
What do you think about that monitor? is 200+$ a good estimate of how much I may get from it? -
If it's a Dell monitor then yea you should be able to get $200 for it unopened... Locally anyway, prolly use Gumtree.
-
Finally, i placed my order with 5% off discount and a $1 monitor... i just treated the monitor as $200 off discount...
Actually, for the same M18X configuration, the 5% off AU price almost equals to the US price plus delivery fee (GST is even not considered here), unless you can get pretty discount on US price which is way too hard, just imagine you can haggle with us reps over 10% off and then also have someone delivered the laptop to you. Then you are more than lucky, and you are omnipotent!
The dell au online reps were 'cool'. when i tried to haggle with them for more than 5% discount, they said,'you are wasting time here', 'you can take your time, but it will still be 5%', 'You can wait and wait but the price will remain the same' ...
alright, i caved coz i figured i cant wait till discount season like Christmas, when new generation of alienware will be coming out. -
I placed my order last week, and the final price is actually $100 cheaper than HID+delivery, not to mention the GST. I blamed the dropping Aus dollar.
-
How often does Dell Au prepare deals for alienware machines?
I'm 99% set on getting it with the 1$ monitor, but do you guys reckon they continuosly dish out some kind of offer? I'd still prefer to get a discount on the starting price, so there's a part of me that's thinking:"WAIT, maybe next week there will be some uber offer of doom!", but then i'm afraid there will be No offer at all xD -
-
-
They had a free upgrade to 16gb RAM a couple of months ago, I would've got that over the monitor, but we'll see, the bonus deals have generally been pretty good, the only bad ones I've seen I think is the speaker.

Not always about more value, I have a 24" at home, and am buying a 32" LED soon for my room, it's personal preference. Selling things is a pain, I avoid it when I can.
-
Speaking of JB, they do sell Alienwares online with ridiculous prices. But someone told me he went into a JB store and a salesman there helped him order an alienware laptop with customised configuration, and the price was 8% off.
As for HID, i was about to buy the m18x of i7-3610/8g RAM/500G HDD/7970CF/killer wireless card, and the price they offered was ~AU$2660, plus ~AU$300 delivery fee, and GST could be waived illeagally, y'know..
But with the same money, i can buy one with slightly better configuration from dell AU (i7-3720 and 750G HDD), ~AU$3000 (after 5% off). besides, i can also get a 24' monitor for $1, which can be counted as $200 off, right?
So after doing this hard math, i guess at this stage, buying m18x from dell au is acceptable. -
The value of an item is not personal preference... the 24" monitor is more valuable than 16GB of RAM, that's not something which you can argue with... $300 VS $100 is a $200 price difference which you seem impartial about, yet you make such a huge deal about the $100 price difference between HID and Dell Au if you risk your freight warranty and decide to under-value the package illegally.
I don't get you... -
If you have time to spend selling items, good for you, I couldn't be bothered getting an accessory just to resell it. Therefore RAM, or some other logical option would be a better choice. Not everything is about money, everything is personal preference. From your Cologne to your Food. If the monitor was 32" it would be a preferred bonus, it is not.
Buying from Dell is acceptable, but if the monitor is the thing that is clinching you to buying from Dell, keep in mind it's simply a limited rotating bonus that changes quite often, if you want to get a quote from JB, do it tomorrow or as early as you possibly can, then your free to decide.
Also, HID are pretty good but you gotta keep in mind (and this is one of the major things that would irritate me), the shipping can be basically a month in a half, two weeks for manufacturing, then three for shipping, the time it takes to ship from America is probably the main reason I'd prefer Dell, but if you can wait, it's your choice.
Getting back on the 8% discount with JB, again, get a quote from Dell AU, take it in and try and force their hand, see if they'll meet the base price, and then see if the bonuses they offer outweigh Dell's. Compare the two and make your decision. -
Quick update: Alienware Australia's current offer is FREE upgrade to 7970m xD
-
i just lost out on a m18x r1, with SSD and 6990 CF.... i bid up to 3100NZD,
should've bid higher... -
If you want an m18 check their outlet. Two days ago they had 2x m18, 2x m17 and 6 or 7 m14. The cheapest m18 was around 2500 au$ for basic configuration with 675m sli. The other model had 2x 512gb ssd in raid 0 and was around 3500 au$ xD.
At the moment everything has been sold, so it's just a matter of checking the outlet at the right time.
I bought my m17r4 today for 1899 au$ from the outlet, with 3610qm, 2x 500gb hdd raid 0, 8gb ram and 7970m.
It's DEFINITELY worth checking it out xD -
Where is this dell outlet, thanks?

-
Well mine doesn't work properly xP Tomorrow i'll ask for a refund due to hardware problems.

I recently bought an m17x r4 from the outlet, everything is working fine (so far). Definitely check it out as it seems to be the cheapest way to get an alienware in Australia.
Specs were 3610, one 500GB 7200 rpm, intel killer wifi, 7970m, 16GB ram, brand new, 1 year warranty. Price was $1600. It seems from talking to my sales person guy, that the outlet sells the new (which were cancelled orders) at 30-40% off RRP. Only downside was that it was red (I'd prefer black), but at that price I couldn't say no.
Any Australia Rep in the Forums?
