Is there any news of possible technology upgrades in the next couple months? Like ATI HD 4870 instead of 3870? I haven't purchased my M17 yet, but I plan to in the next couple months. I can wait until June, and I'm curious if there's any hope for an upgrade by then..

we've been waiting for the HD4870 for months now. there are rumors that it'll be available very very soon, others say there are substantial issues with the heat dissapation etc. i would definitely wait if you can.

I sent off an e-mail to enquire about the 4870's.

Here is the reply I got from Alienware Armando:

"Hello and sorry for a late reply....I was investigating and trying to get some info from upper management and product group but unfortunately, I was unable to get anything regarding future changes/releases. But as you know we always work on providing upgrades, changing hardware configuration to our notebooks, etc.
Although I cant confirm but I think is safe to say that the video card should be available for our notebooks but I cant really confirm or provide you with an estimate time frame when this will happen. Thank you for your support and your inquiries."

So of course, he and the other A.W. employees are unable to actually confirm anything which I suppose is understandable.

It is unlikely that there will be any "real" confirmation until there is an official release from A.W.

I wonder if there was any *mutual* agreement between ASUS and ATI to hold off releasing the mobility HD4870 to others, for a few months for the ASUS W90VP to *mature* if you know what I mean :D . God Bless :)

So, if it's not out by June, is it that important to wait longer? How big of a difference is there between the 3870 and 4870? actually, not theoretically.

Can't really give you a percentage amount but the 4870's used in the W90 outperform the 3870's in 3Dmark Vantage by a decent amount. The W90 is also hitting 16-17k scores in 3Dmark06 with a QX9300 pretty reliably, so considering the 4870's in the W90 are DDR3, the 4870 DDR5 versions we will see will considerably outperform the 3870's in our Whitebooks.

I'm sure they'll get released eventually... Is anyone not happy with the performance of their 3870's? I know I'm plenty satisfied for now.

Yeah, and if they came out with some uber card that tripled performance for $1000 each, how long do you think it would be till they ran out of stock? :D

It would just be nice if they came out with the 4870s.

Although Im prolly not going to get them when they first come out. It would just be nice to know that I could upgrade to them when the 3870s couldnt run newer games as well.

    Know what I mean? :p

    yeh thats the same here,

i wouldnt have brought the 4870 if they were in the shop now, as they would undoubtedly have cost enough to have put it out of my price range so i would have had to use the 3870 anyway.

Which tbh is still a great combination compared to the average laptop

I'm hardly convinced with 4850/70. If 3870s CF were consistantly in game performance, but no. Then now 48x0 is catching-up to NV, yet its performance doesn't leave 8800m GTX sli in the cold. It would take another generation of red cards to force NV to be competitive, and stop renaming the ****ing cards...
