Just a thought
am totally discouraged at the prices here for this, looking for some hope
for us canadians, who live like 50 miles from US border can get better than full pop
I know I can buy in us online, have it shipped, but really, should not have to, with all the complications re: warranty, duties and complications
Any one with any valuable tips/ tricsks , ideas? Dell (Edit: CANADA, not US) is pretty dumb, as I will not buy at full price however much I would buy in a moment if it was a reasonable deal.
any ideas?
take care

I should have prefaced, Dell, Canada ? US seems to be on the ball, with promotions and discounts etc.
is that better?
If not, take care anyway

see if you can order a best buy model or a microcenter model
-
called MicroCenter, they said not only the will not ship to canada, but even the UPS store is out of bounds, even if it's in the USA
seems they are very very strict with deliveries, even in the US, warehouse, warehouse stores, transshipment points, nothing works
Best buy next ? do they have a deal as good as Microcenter, I am crying in frustration at the MicroCenter deal; it's has all the options I want, great prices, (like 1,000 $ canadian cheaper wth?).
aI'll see best buy US, any other ideas ?
Thx again all (and esp MOO)

Same thing for Best Buy, no ship to canada and the candian Best buy does not sell alienware in Canada..
Argh it should be so hard to spend 2,500 !
any ideas /wrist

Wait a bit until they have it in stock, then go pick it up from the closest Microcenter to you? Will they allow in-store pick up if you have to order it?

I just went to both the Dell.ca or Alienware.ca and tried building the system with latest pricing and options, to be as comparable as teh Best Buy 2100 model as well as the MicroCenter 2,250 model active right now on their sites. Here is what I came up with;
--------------------------
SYSTEM COLOR Space Black – Anodized Aluminum edit
PROCESSOR Intel® Core™2 Quad Q9000 2.0GHz (6MB Cache, 1066MHz FSB) edit
OPERATING SYSTEM Windows Vista Home Premium (64 bit) + Windows 7 Home Premium Upgrade Coupon edit
WARRANTY AND SERVICE 1Yr Ltd Hardware Warranty, InHome Service after Remote Diagnosis edit
LCD PANEL 17-inch WideUXGA 1920x1200 (1200p) edit
MEMORY 4GB Dual Channel DDR3 at 1066MHz – 2 x 2048MB edit
HARD DRIVE 500GB 7,200RPM w/ Free Fall Protection edit
VIDEO CARD Dual NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 260M, 2GB – SLI® Enabled edit
INTERNAL OPTICAL DRIVE Slot-Load Dual Layer Blu-ray Combo (BR-ROM, DVD+-RW, CD-RW)
This is a pretty standard config, at both MicroCenter or best Buy US. I just checked. AT best buy, 2,100 USD, MicroCenter 2250 or so USD
-----------
Price sheet in Canada on dell site in canada ? I just Config'ged it, as we speak, latest pricing, and of course, no promotions at all on the site as far as I can see.
Alienware M17x
Space Black – Anodized Aluminum, Windows Vista Home Premium (64 bit) + Windows 7 Home Premium Upgrade Coupon
Adjust System Update Total $3,079.00
Sub-total $3,079.00
Before Taxes.
Our exchange rate, as of today, is 1.07 and going better everyday...
Take teh Microcenter Price, 2250 X 1.07 = It SHOULD be 2,400 CDN, or $ 700 (or almost 30% Cheaper, 700/2,400 something like 28%)
thank you Dell/ Alienware Canada! <sarcasm>
I really, really don't want to bore people (although I know I already might have), but this is simply awful
What have other canadians done in past, given up on dell and bought something else (or worse yet, abandonned the purchase altogether?)
I'd appreciate any help, and thank you in advance

I live near NY state, so nothing is close apart from Long Island I think; that's quite a commute
Also they screen out out of country people by having only a US driven web form for the billing address, as it has to be the same as your Credit card..
Sneaky !
SO unless I drove to long island and grabbed it on the floor, sight unseen (as I cannot buy it online and pick it up), no dice
Thx for the advise though!
Damn it should be so hard to spend 2,500 in this day and age (recession and all)
Take care

If prices don't come down in Canada for the m17x, I'm buying another model or brand. -
If you think that's bad compare the M17x base prices in the US and the UK:
$1,799 vs £1,699
Granted the UK comes with the Q9000 base but with that added on it's still $2,049 vs £1,699. Converted that's £1,269 vs £1,699. That's a big difference. -
That is unfortunately the only conclusion I can come to, as there is no excuse for this gouging when we are pretty close in prices for everything else, esp with our dollar at close to parity
Everywhere you look, great deals abound in US for that laptop, with much extra functionality, and here, it's full pop with alsmot nobody selling it; pretty sad tbh, but what choice do I have?
Thx again
J -
yes it is, and Europe has always paid the price, higher that is; could it be the VAT?
Anyways, here in canada, there is no excuse for no discounts at all, no promotions and full retail for a laptop with a multitude of deals available through eitehr direct, market channels like stores, etc.
Sad, sad, sad, seems I have no way to fight this, unless someone has some advice.
I have to admit I am also trying to raise awareness of how bad we are treated here, and hoping someone reads this and realizes it is counter-productive to gouge everyone here.
Without becoming "preachy" or boring, if that's at all possible
take care
J
