Sorry if this has been posted before.
Is it me or is it frustrating that even though we are paying the same amount, if you live in the uk you have fewer options on the m15x( and I guess the m17x). Even the little things like name plate engraving and optional wow install would be nice (purely for the sheer amount of time it takes to install wow and the hundreds of patches) not to mention the limited choice in HDD (I would of loved a ssd but certainly won't be buying an extra one now).
I know I am still getting a nice peice of kit it just annoys me that I am missing out on extras that I would have liked

Yes it's the same on the m17x. Crap really isn't it?

Yeah it really is. I'd have been prepared to pay for a ssd, even wow install (because it is such a pain in the tushie). I can't understand why we don't have same options, aren't they made in same place? I can't think of any reasonable reason why they can't offer the same options

Its cheaper to buy the SSD on the internet and install it yourself.

    Save yourself some money.

    Just my 2cents.

ps. WoW install these days is not that hard. Download the automatic installer from their website and sit back and relax. You don't even need to press any keys after it starts installing so go enjoy a movie with the mrs or whatever and when you come back its installed and patched :)!

Lol it may be cheaper to buy it but knowing my technical skills no matter how easy it is I would find a way to screw it up.

Oh and thanks for the wow install advice. Was seriously not looking forward to several hours of restarting installer for all the different patches

Its kinda easy to install the HDD's...if the M15x is the same as the M17 its just sliding in the HDD mount...cant mess up anything there ;).

then installing it and installing os?
    Any ideas on brand?

I think my main problem is the principal of the thing. I am paying a considerable amount for my laptop and I feel I should be entitled to same options

Yeah, I'm kind of wishing I'd waited a little longer to order (simply for price to come down/options to improve) but when I decided on the m15x I didn't want to wait lol

Yeah, although my current laptop manages ok with wow it will be nice to max it all out so its easier to keep up in fights.
Although judging from the forums on the AW refresh the m15x is only changing to offer the i5 which I wouldn't want. Glad I ordered it when I did, will be here just in time for my birthday

Did you take the warranty with it or what...

Because if u go to dmxdimensions.com . You can get a M15x with 6 gb ram rest all same except for the hard drive being 250 gb. It totals upto £1192.30 for the rig. If you try to upgrade it through dell it is £400ish just for 6 gb ram although its a lot cheaper if you get it off ebay £120-150, if i am not wrong. This is post VAT increase.

Whats your estimated delivery date. Mine's 26/12.

    My config: Intel core i7 720, 6 gb 1333mhz ram, 1gb Gtx 260m 1920 x 1080 WLED

What I'm annoyed about is the price difference between the US M17x and the UK M17x. It's almost as if someone failed at currency conversion and nobody's noticed yet.

Or that greedy Dell is greedy.

Yes, comparing the prices there's quite a difference. More than usual I mean :)

And yes Dell are greedy, every company is really :p

    Hi!

My first post after discovering this excellent forum a few days ago!
First of all thanks to NBR and you lot for an entertaining and informative collection of threads.
I've been interested in buying an Alienware for years (my current Dell Inspiron 9300 is way out of date).

I found this forum whilst looking for more information about Alienware as the company seems to have a VERY unreliable reputation at best. In fact it's that negative rep which has discouraged me from buying one for so long.

That and the fact that, as the OP said, the UK prices are outrageous and the options compared to our US cousins are risible at best. (No SSD on M15x anyone?) Such that I am thinking of contacting a friend in New York, asking him to order me one and then send it over! (would that work btw?)

Anyway I will be very interested in a new M17x refresh (when released) am trying to decide between SLi and X-fire, as there seem to be just SO many problems with Sli on the forums at the moment.

The M11x looks incredible and I would be very tempted to get one as a companion piece to the eventual M17x.

As a side note, I thought that the best GPU was the GTX 295 I didn't know there was an even better one out a 335 I think ( correct me if I'm way off!)

Also has anyone bought an Alienware that 'Just Works' out of the box, no tweaking etc?

Anyway sorry for the slightly off topic post, I just wanted to say hello and agree with the OP. I really would encourage DELL to revise it's UK prices especially in light of the fact that the economic crisis is really beating us Brits down at the moment...

    B

Why is that a hard decision? Crossfire is better performance and better price. And the architecture is much newer. The GTX 280 is 100 years old :)

The GTX 295 is a desktop processor. Nvidia's best notebook processor is the GTX 280M followed by the GTX 260M (M stands for mobile)

Mine did work out of the box but high end pc always require some tweaking.

It is the same in europe not just UK, While we have a better currency, the dell proces does not reflect that.

Thank you so much to the3vilGenius for those succinct and definite answers to my questions! + Rep

I was always a little puzzled about the difference between SLi and X-fire but nowhere near knowledgeable enough to know anything about architecture etc. It just seems to me that there are alot more subscribers to the SLi camp on forums but maybe that's because there are more problems!

Ok I will definitely go Crossfire on the next refresh.

Sorry if I hijack the thread.
To go back to OP it sucks that Dell is doing the same thing across Europe, but I guess their price point works, otherwise no one would buy, eh?

Well seeing as my delivery date is Monday I think its a little late. I know I should of shopped around a bit more, oh well. But I don't think I will be sending it back just to get it cheaper (unless it doesn't work of course) because knowing my luck it will all go wrong on the second one. But nope, no extended warranty for me Whitewizard.
But I suppose it just highlights the rubbishness that is dell at the moment, why offer all customers the same options (as far as they possibly can) when they can charge more for fewer options and get away with it. Perhaps they subscribe to the idea that the brits are a reserved bunch who won't kick up a massive fuss. Who knows? But i highly doubt it is going to change because they get away with it so well and well they just don't give a damn

Very much so!!! Although I do wish I'd looked at getting it from someone other than dell
