I just noticed my first nick on the surface of my M17x-R2  , Lunar Silver, was curious if anyone else had found a particularly good way to touch the silver surface up, like a good modeling paint or some-such? Any thoughts greatly appreciated!

Wait, i thought the lunar silver was just brushed aluminum and not a paint job

If you need a good modeling paint to cover nicks/scratches then i would suggest either Tamya or Valejo. They make some of the best paints available in the modeling worlds and make about 9000 different colors so color match should be simple.

from the pictures I've seen of a LS M17x, there's no way that's brushed aluminum. Brushed aluminum has lines and streaks in it, the M17x is smooth. It's painted.

unless the surface of a LS M17x looks like this:

    it's painted.

Well, I think that it's not painted, nor brushed. According to the Dell/AW configurator it's anodized
Lunar Silver - Anodized Aluminum [Included in Price]
Space Black - Anodized Aluminum Add $0.00
Nebula Red - Special Edition - Anodized Aluminum [Add $99.00 or $3.00/month1]

and as such (if Dell/AW are consistent with their own words) the anodized aluminium need a special (or different) consideration and treatment.
    May I suggest to read: http://www.anodizing.org/FAQ/faqs.html ?
It can bring in some lights. ;)

I had propossed it before but it seem adequate to proposse it again here: It's a good meassure to proactively protect you computer lid with a "paint protection filmThere are different brands and it's used on Formula I cars (and aircrafts too) to avoid scratches, nicks, etc. produced at high speeds by road debris such as rocks, bugs, salt, etc.

So basically, it is not painted like SOS4DELL suggests.

Therefore a dent could bring out the aluminium below and bring out the aluminium color that does not have the dye.

Since Anodizing is a process ( Anodizing - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia ) Im wondering if the laptop surface should be repaired similar to an automobile. NOW, I know cars are painted BUT so is the 'anodized surface', I believe it's an electrostatic coating on our laptops, very similar to the coating on an office desk (also an anodized aluminum). -comments?-

Personally I have used the cars "protection films" (also in the external plastic parts of my Dell's) with more than satisfying results.

It is compressed anodized aluminum. its the most expensive and durable form of anodized aluminum.

Like the cryo lx cooler is regular anodized aluminum. the m17x is compressed.

people who own both will see the difference

I think I would prefer paint to anodized, as paint can be easily reapplied (and changed) by anyone who knows his stuff (or going to a shop which does that for you).

OP, your signature states that you have 4 years of advanced care coverage. That covers accidental cosmetic damage too.

Beware that if anyone has the bottom replaced, they do not bother to replace the labels (& refuse to replace the Windows COA, claiming the licensing with Microsoft as the reason), so use a razor blade to carefully remove the service tag & Windows COA before the onsite tech leaves with the old bottom panel.

This is exactly the case from what I can tell, the "spot" is very much like a divot, pushed down on one edge, pushed up on the other. Thanks to my being in the dark trying to wrap the cable around my mouse while moving the laptop, the USB end whipped around and did the damage

Wow... good points all! I'd feel kind of silly for this small a nick, but still.... good to know. It makes me feel better already! Good advice on the bottom panel,

anodizing is painting, it's applying a protective layer of film to guard the material. The difference is anodizing adherers to metal better and more evenly than traditional paint does.
