I'm currently asking myself... how long will this m15x last?

I want it for 3 years.. spending 3,500 dollars for a laptop, i want it to last me
But even reading topics are people who are having a great time with there laptop ( no problems, no need for repairs ) the temperature on the components are so hot! 65-75 GPU Idle? How long is that going to last, i don't think it will run for 3 years.

You can upgrade your warranty later.
But you should expect to send the laptop back for repairs every 6 months or so.

Yeah. And because it's always at the depot you never get tired of it! :)
But always remember... You can send it back when you receive it. ;)

Hi this is not a flame response but just some wisdom I Have picked up through the years with gaming machines.

Never buy a full speced system with the intent that it will last longer than a lower speced one. For example, in may of 2006 I got THE premiere laptop on the market with the dell xps m1170. I got the base model with the best GPU. It was a 1.83ghz core duo with 1 gig ram (upgraded to 2) 60gig 7200 rpm hd and 7900GTX GPU. That was significantly cheaper than the 2.0ghz and 2.16ghz cpu and crazy ram and HD configurations. People think that they "future proof" by going big but they really don't. Flashforward only a few years and that core duo is WAY outdated by the core 2 duo penryn.

Basically the BEST config m1170 vs my original base config would make ZERO difference in todays great games...it would struggle equally being bottlenecked by the GPU and even the CPU (1.83 is hardly different than 2.16). With these m15x systems the GPU will be the ONLY bottleneck in games. As long as you have a 2.2ghz system...the gpu will be a limiting factor.

So you could spend about 2k on a system now and then another 2k in two years and have spent roughly the same amount of money you paid originally. It is very difficult because when buying something so evoking like a gaming pc..it is easy to think emotionally vs logically. SO I just am trying to humbly say that you should never buy top end IF you plan on doing so for "future proofing."

With that said, your system should run fine. I usually stick with the 1 year warranty and enjoy the system for a few years and then upgrade. I only brought up the other points because you mention trying to get the most out of 3500 and I am thinking maybe it wouldn't feel so anxiety provoking if you spent less. Food for thought I guess. cheeers.

Daveh, I understand where you are going here. I agree. Partially.

I think that having a great chassis that is upgradeable like what AW provides is CRUCIAL if you want to try to futureproof to the best of your abilities instead of simply buying another machine. Secondly, spending top $ on a CPU that is barely faster or a GPU that is barely faster is silly. I agree... if you want it, you can always just upgrade later when it is cheaper. :)

    So there's my food of thought, get your fill, or leave it all. It's up to you. ^-^;

    Lets see...

I've had mine now about 3 mos maybe a bit longer upon bootinbg the system and looking things over only issues i had were the system did not read the full 4gigs of ram and the macafee antivirus did not register properly.

Both these issues were easy fixed with tech support first issue was the bios needed to be upgraded ass thier was a new release 3 days before the system arrived here, next issue was downloading SP1 Vista and rebooting then system read all 4gigs properly i understand that 32 bit VIsta cannot utilize 4gigs of ram at this point but none the less at least the system now reconizes 4gigs installed.

I play WOW and have recently installed and played CRYSIS and it rocks along just fine system: T9300 2.5gig duo 4 gigs ram 8800M GTX 120gig 7200 HD no complaints here just pure fun.
o ya i got the 3yr waranty when you spendin this much cashola lol its just a drop for 2 more years and a lot of head relief later on maybe?

    PEACE

No i agree with that completely. I think you should go for upgrade if available but my point is that the machines have the SAME upgradability no matter how you configure it. The problem with upgradability is that there really isn't much..especially if you max out the specs. The GPU is sometimes upgradable. But that is about it. Montevina is right around the corner and I don't see quad's being an option and with the new nvidia desktop GPU's around the corner...i dont think those will ever fit into our machines once they figure out how to get the thermal logistics figured out and the size for notebooks. But ya....if its upgradeable then go for it. But for notebooks...the chassis are always the same i think.

edit. The reason I said u can upgrade every couple years was based on people that spend 4kish on the initial investment. If I spent 4k on my xps for an extra 400 mhz and some extra ram..I could have gotten the lower specced 2500 dollar version for 2500 and then spend 1200 on that gateway with the 8800 card and been in much better shape for todays games. thats all my point was.

daveh98, i didnt mean futureproof. I ment that there are so many problems ( overheating, chassis's breaking, downblocking ) that it might not last that long..

if you always futureproofing by bying midrange u will never play on high settings or resoultion... (only once games are old)..

i would rather play Farcry2 Fallout3 Crysis:warhead Spore new Prinse of Persia and WoW:WOTLK halflife2 end in ep3 and SC2 at max settings now... than get some 8600 and tone down the gfx..

thats not a emotional response thats knowing that the best games for the next 3 mabye 5 years.. are coming out this year.

I think the bigest prob facing the m15x in the future is not mobile GPU's getting faster beacuse they will but not that fast unless new cooling methods are used... but rather the roll of Quadcore and mabye 8 core in PC gaming over the next 2-4 years..

i really hope PC gaming sets the standard of Duelcore.... but i dont think it will in the end sadly. even WoW pushes the limits of a current duel already.
    ;(
Regardless with smart bay battery i would be suprized if m15x holds the power to potential battery life ratio prize for quite some time.

My m15x gpu idles at 45 degrees. No overheating. No downclocking.

Got 2 m5550's that have never had a single problem after almost 2 years. One of them runs 24/7.

Celsius. Using nvtemplogger in XP. It doesn't seem to work in Vista. I believe my idling temps are higher in Vista since i have Aero on - i sometimes hear the gpu fan speeding up. I rarely run the Vista partition - usually am in Linux or XP. The Vista partition is there for Vista-only games.

I've had my m15x for almost 6 months and have had almost no problems. i had downclocking like everyone else, but the bios upgrade fixed that problem well.

Also, there are some proactive things everyone should do to keep their aw happy and healthy. 80% of the time, I keep mine on integrated graphics which helps with the heat issues. When I play games (maybe a few hrs a day) i'll switch to dedicated. When I do play, i monitor the temps with rivatuner, just to make sure things are ok. I prop up the back to increase airflow and also clean out the fans every now and then.

I think all high-end mechanical items need a little tlc, cars, high-end stereo equipment, whatever. Have a lappy that pushes the current boundaries of performance? I'd be wise to be a bit cautious.

I always warranty my laptops. I had my dell for six years 5 of which were warrantied (had something fixed almost every year it was worth it) anyway I only got a one year on the aw cause I ran out of money but I intend to extend the warranty to three years later.

Better do that asap, otherwise they'll change their policy so you can't extend your warranty just to screw up all the M15X customers.

Yeah, same here, planning on upgrading my warranty for full 3 years.. lol i thought i should make a new thread about discussing warranty but nevermind :D Will AW really change their warranty policy??? :( :(

Back to topic, well its been a wild adventure with my m15x over the past 4 or 5 months and it DOES have issue but since i just fix it myself with the help of NBR's member, its not all that bad experience since i get some good knowledge about tweaking/fixing on computer and etc.

M15x will last long and if you cant depend on the warranty (which you should), then you can depend on how you make use of the notebook... by taking care of it really well you can probably add more life span to it.

My previous Acer notebook have been with me for over 3 years and even with a year of warranty, i take real good care of it!!! :D

I've had my m9750 for almost a year no, no problems apart from a dvd drive that died and not been given the cd for kaspersky anti-virus, so no licence key for it when i reformatted/respawned. Which was annoying, but they sent me a new cd.

Apart from that, the system is always nice and cool, i have a zalman NC2000 which helps too.

Thats incorrect, I can back you up though because I have asked before and one cs agent said no it couldn't be done and another said yes, when you order your system they give you the chance to buy a longer warranty but as long as you upgrade your warranty before that year is up you'll be fine

I received an email from AW a few days ago informing me that my 1 year warranty on my m9750 was about to expire and gave me the option to upgrade to the 3-year warranty. The upgrade costs $260 and gives you 2 more years of coverage.

I truly dont think you can say.

The m9750 and the M15x are totally different ballgames. The m9850 was acutally functional.

The m15x, however, is host to a series of problems from day 1, which I suspect you already know of.

However, even if you were to get a fully functional m15x, you still could not say, for it depends, regardless of warranty or no warranty, of the the care to give to your notebook. This is not just a Dell Insipron or HP pavilion, it is a premier gaming notebook, and should be given the quality care of one from the end user.

That means regular fan cleanings, performance tuning and benchmarking, using on the correct surfaces, not overheating the batter etc. More tips can be found at the Clevo Guide.

My tip is that the m15x does not seem to be a relaible nb to me. What to speak of 3 years, you will be lucky to get one that is good for 3 months.

That being said, not to sound like a fanboy and such, but the m860tu, based on previous Clevo nbs and the fan/thermal design, should last longer.

Basically, I do not see any reason to pull the trigger on the m15x now, and I highly suggest waiting for the m860tu and then decide on what you want.

Neither can you, given that you don't own an m15x. It seems to me that a lot of people are jumping on the anti-m15x bandwagon and playing follow the leader.

The system has problems - hell, I had problems with my review m15x - but it's difficult to judge how bad they really are considering how information is being spread in this forum at the moment.

I'm still waiting on my m15x, I know alot of people have cancelled, but I've also heard many good things. I'm going to wait until it arrives. If there are problems I'm going to just return it, simple as that. As with the case of any message board, often we only hear the worst. I'm going to be optimistic!

Good let me know how your turns out i'm on phase 5 right now, but your right aswell my order number was close to 400,000, idk if that is just m15x's or just all the orders of AW, anyway thats a lot of orders and how many people have we heard complaints from 50, if that? But if I don't like it I'll just return it...simple

Haha the anti M15x bandwagon. I could say that I'm a part of that but then again I have dealt with AW for 14 months about 1 single laptop from them and have also been here awhile (not compared to you chaz :) but compared to a lot of people here so I've been through a year of people loving / complaining about AW notebooks to know that the M15x has set a new record :).

I may have said that I hated the M15x but I don't know. I know that I've said that it has had many problems and they seem to be repeating which would suggest a more widespread problem with them.

Come on guys, honestly... all this talk about "disgruntled" owners, vendettas, anti-M15x wagons it's a bit pointless. There are people that have all legitimacy to want to bring AW before the world, expose their poor class act and get retribution for having been put through what they have. Are people overreacting? Maybe they are, but when you followed the M15x story from the beginning and the way AW dealt with all the problems, then these people have owned all rights to legally sue AW and to expose one of the poorest laptop manufacturing companies that I've came across in recent years.

I'm sure lots of people think of me as a "disgruntled" owner. Well, on my side, that was never the intention. I always tried to help, present personal facts, gather community facts... to inform. Obviously I didn't make a great work at keeping my cool when exposed to cases of lids breaking, overheating of laptop's components, inability of AW to deal with this in a timely manner, hollow answer from AW representatives that are more of a offense than any genuine attempt at trying to help people... amongst other things. And I'm really amazed how can people stand by AW's side. Even if my laptop was perfect, everything that was done on AW's side would drive me mad (like it already does).

Anyway... apart from the love/hate relationship most of us seem to have for AW, buying or not the M15x now is, like someone mentioned a matter of smart thinking and intelligent planning. Whatever way you might feel about the M15x, regardless of whether you do or do not want to listen to the 1000 of threads complaining (over and over again over the same things which, I agree, can be a bit tiring)... waiting for a laptop that is going to take the podium of the M15x on the "World's fastest 15'4 laptop" and is going to be out in less than one month is, very simply, the most intelligent thing to do. You will have 2 similar laptops two choose from in less than one month. How can this not be a positive and wise thing to do?

@Milcs - I totally agree with you and the last part of your post.

@Chaz - If you are sent a M860tu would it be possible for you to put it through a stress test so we can really see if it holds up if Justin @ Xotic doesn't test theirs.

One thing I notice on computer tech fourms. There will always problem systems of any type. If you get 10 people on the forum with the same problem posting over and over. It dont look good. But the question is How many people who had the same Laptop. That had the same setup running 100%.

What happen with Alienware fourms. Was they needed a upgrade the bios to stop the downclocking. Which bring in more people then normal.

Like I said before there was a lot of hype about the M15x before it actually came out, can you honestly say that the M860tu, the first 15.4 inch to have 9800gtx, quad core processor, 8gb ddr3 ram is going to be totally problem free? Idk it may be totally problem free but I think its going to have some heat problems too. The only way you can say its going to be much better than the m15x is too wait for it to come out and see if it holds up to all the hype

The M860TU won't support the 9800GTX. Those are Clevo's official information. Try and go to Clevo Forum a bit to get a bit of relevant information.

Regarding problems... obviously people will do well to wait for reviews to make sure it will be performing as expected... But as most of Clevo's users say, their cooling solutions are amongst the most efficient in laptops. Do we hear AW users saying that? Don't think so... In any case, I can bet it's not going to be the total fiasco the M15x was. I think it would be very difficult to beat it...

woops my bad guys I was looking at the "edge" m860, found here http://www.pcmicroworks.com/edge.htm, it does for sure look like a beast but when your pushing the limits on any notebook your bound to run into problems
