I just started experiencing this issue about 3 days ago after not having any problems with my MX17-R3 since I got it in January.

Timeout Detection and Recovery of GPUs through..........

I've found many resources that talk about attempts to solve the issue but nothing that seems to actually work yet. I am hoping that this forum which seems to be full of really smart and AW experienced people might have some real insight as to what to try to get beyond that crashing and lockups.

I love watching movies on my lappie as well as playing games. And 3D rocks on some of those games. Until this started I never had a problem watching movies or playing games.

    Please help if you can!

TIA for any assistance you can provide!

    Hi daspazz,

I will be more than glad to assist you. I worked for Dell / Alienware as a Level3 Technician.

I need some information about your system.

Which version of video card driver you have installed?
Which Bios version you hvae installed in your computer?

    Regards,

    Aw-FedericoH

daspazz is in good hands :) - thanks, Federico

If you find a solution that others can benefit from, please post it here for the Community. This is receiving a fair amount of attention from AMD and NVIDIA owners on the web.

    Thanks FedericoH!!!

Hope this helps! I did find some interesting things out. Some of my Alienware apps are missing. Like Command Center, AlienAutopsy and PC Checkup as well as, my Card Reader drivers. Im trying to reinstall that stuff now.

This is the main reason i want to change my 460m sli to 7970m CF.

I have searched the whole internet to find a solution. Nothing was usefull. Allthough i have done nothing in the latest time i have not received any more error.

Since it seems to be a driver related error, the only way to fix it is to not use nvidia card anymore.
Now the time is good as 7970m is just launched a day ago.

I also used to have this problem like 2-3 months ago when I got a motherboard replacement, and this happen whenever I in game about 5-10 mins, this message will pop then freeze/crash whatever game I currently have on, especially BF3 but there is a temporary solution that require you to do that every time you restart your laptop, and that you will have to mess around with the Registry Editor. Do this at your own risk because usually the TDR error is prompt only when Windows detect that there are problems with either the GPU or the LCD Display, but sometime there are no problem with the either of the hardware at all (Like mine), so I use the TDR disable method to temporary disable the message. Follow the instruction below:

    1) Open Registry Editor - Press Windows Key + R to bring up the Run menu then type in "Regedit" without quote.
    2) Navigate to this path: " HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/HARDWARE/DEVICEMAP/VIDEO "
    3) Find and Double click on " MaxObjectNumber " and change the value to " 0 ", usually the default value is 7, this will disable the error.
    4) Close Regedit to save the changes.

Now after you done the step above, try your game again and you should be able to play without any sort of TDR-related errors again :)

Dont jump ship just yet!! Turns out it wasn't my GPU or anything else.

I was doing some research on my system. I had used a different method to disable TDR. And my system was not failing as much. Anyway, I wanted to check my system and I started looking at the standard AlienWare software that comes with our systems. I looked for AlienAutopsy and found it was missing from my system, as well as CommandCenter. I re-added both and ran AlienAutopsy and found that it has some neat tools. One that lets you look at system crashes. System Tools > Utilities > Performance and Configuration > Critical Events > click on red squares.

I could then see that Application Errors were happening and causing crashes. Specifically STacSV64.exe, which happens to be C:\Program Files\IDT\WDM\STacSV64.exe. IDT is our HD audio driver. So I reinstalled that and now my system has been running without issues for over 2 days now. Don't know what caused the stuff to get trashed but now I'm a lot better and will try and play a game again. (I actually didn't try to play one while this was happening. Videos alone crashed my system!)

But thanks to everyone that tried to help and replied to this Post! I really like this place a lot. It has tons of helpful data on our lovely systems. And some really GREAT and HELPFUL people.

Hopefully my update will be helpful to others!

Wishful thinking, my friend. AMD systems have the exact same issues. In fact, if you look in NVIDIA forums, you will find AMD owners looking there for ideas how to solve their TDR issues. I actually used to have the "AMD driver stopped responding and successfully recovered" error a whole lot more frequently on my 6970M and 6990M CrossFire setups than I do now with 580M SLI. I ended up modding the vBIOS on the 6970M cards to reduce the frequency of that issue.

A Google search of the Alienware sub-forum alone produces over 77,000 matches related to AMD.

Google search... site:forum.notebookreview.com/alienware "atikmdag.sys has stopped responding"

Glad it appears you have got things sorted. Interesting the the NVIDA driver error would be caused by IDT audio drivers. That doesn't seem quite right, but still glad the problem seems to be fixed.

I hear ya Mr. Fox. But reading through a few forums I found that its not always specific to the GPU driver. One post talked about it could be a number of things. Software installations, drivers not meshing, hardware conflicts, hardware failing, software conflicts, and possibly a ton of other things.

I was surprised as well, but like I said so far I've had NO problems since discovering and replacing the missing or "malformed" software, things are now very rosy!

AW-FedericoH would you like crash dumps? I wasn't aware I was saving any but I think I have a few if you want to review them. If our research could benefit the collective then Im down with helping out as much as I can.

Interesting!!! I found this about the ATI Driver and the TDR error on Dells website. I hope that helps anyone else that has this error and is on an ATI GPU.
