Has anyone here utilized an external blu-ray drive before? If so was it very successful? What brand did you utilize? Any suggestions or thoughts? I just got the m17 but think I want to get an external BD-rom so I can use on it and my wifes inspiron. Curious if the slim players work, or if you really need an external power source. Any opinons would be super appreciated. I hate buying something and then have to bring it back. I know most hardware you purchase does not come with Blu-ray software. The m17 did come with powerdvd8, I just can't tell which version (besides oem).

    Thanks for all your help!

Speedwise, there should be no problem. I am also guessing they can be powered by the USB port as well. You should be good with an external drive....

I bought a external blu ray drive for my Asus, works great. I got mine off ebay for dirt cheap, I think it was about $75, and it came with a disk that had software on it. It was a panasonic UJ-120, comes with 2 cords but only one is needed if you have usb 2.0. Just be smart if you use ebay and look for a seller with a ton of sales and very high rep. Here is a link to the one I bought but the sale is over.

So far it has played everything I have perfectly. It only needs the one usb cord so no external power needed. Seems fast too.

In a review of another external bd-rom drive it was mentioned that there was not enough power through the usb 2.0 port to play bd rom discs... sounds to me like the usb ports were not powered or something. I am looking at the uj-120 drives now. Thanks!!!!!
