Hey guys.... quick question, just ordered some Arctic Silver 5 from amazon as i will soon be moving to warmer climbs and any help i can give my M17 to stay cool is better than nothing.

The question is, can i apply to the gpu's as well as CPU?

if so then anyone who can give me some guidance on what to do.... and even more so what not to so will be a hero in my eyes.

    Cheers fellas!

This is a nice quick demo of how to apply thermal paste.

The same steps apply for a notebook CPU, and yes, your GPUs as well.

The one additional thing I would recommend would be instead of a lint free towel, I would recommend a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser or similar product. The abrasive nature of the Mr. Clean sponge is similar to that of high grit wet sand paper, and does a better job of clean/smoothing/polishing the surfaces.

I have 2 D900T's as well as a D900K, I have used Artic Cooling MX-2 on the processor and the GPU and the temp drop is very significant. Both the CPU and GPU droped around 5 deg celsius under full load. Artic Silver 5 is great, but Artic Cooling MX-2 is better.

I saw somewhere that replacing the thermal compound will void the warranty.

AW's stuff is greyish as well. the "blue stuff" is for the GPU's memory chips, and is more like a thermal pad than thermal grease.

As far as i've been told (Directly from Alienware) replacing the thermal paste does not void the warranty - heck they even told me to replace it when they had me pulling off the fans etc to reseat video cards! I still had to send my system in and they certainly repaired it!

hummm werid there have been mixed feedback. One person had to fight AW because he changed it and evidentaly you had no problem.

i would say do it at you own discretion

I think providing you phone them up and they get you to reseat and/or replace the GPU/CPU then they dont have an issue with it - i most certainly made sure they knew i was changing it though :p
