Heyyy, been waitin for the Area 51 m17x to come out...a while now @_@. The m15x came out, which gave me a glimmer of hope, but as the weeks go by, and no further signs are given, I am losing all hope.

Will the m17x ever come out?? >.< Could it be months and months from now? Someone give me a ballpark figure! Anything! Just to keep me going. Hell Dell have come out with this new thing called the XPS M1730. Fully maxed, its one tough cookie (from the spec I read in the magazne anyway) and could easily rival the m17x, and it starts at only 2199 euro!! I'm tempted!!

That said, I still want an AW!!! :'( Specifically: the m17x.
Okay, Im finished whining... Anyone any info on it? <.<

(oh and riddle me this, batman, why did AW say they were offering ripley AND skullcap designs when they seem to only offer ripley now (reference: m15x)!! >.<)

Well your guess is as good as mine - I'd advise you to check out the m17x Release info and m17x General info threads for the theories.
The same goes for the Skullcap designs.. Most users believe it's because AW are trying to sort out the downclocking issues some m15x owners with the 8800 GTX are experiencing.

As for an official response check out the AlienNetwork page on the Alienware.com site. They're going to release a videocast on April 29th and may just talk about the skullcap and/or m17x on the show if not bring them on..
Hope this helps you keep your sanity :)

Edit: Here's one or two reasons users have come up with why the m17x is delayed -
    > Montevina release in June
    > Making the 9 series cards available on it
Once again, those are all rumours..

To be fair i'd expect them to be ready, they've had no end of calls and emails and if AW Steve has been watching these threads (which i'm sure he has lol) he can tell that there are alot of us wanting this oober machine ASAP

I'm thinking that it all de3pends on parts being available but...

Also if you consider the relative amount of negative advertisment that they have gotten with the m15x problems, They probabaly wan't the m17x to come out and be friggin amazin and that everybody forgets about the probs with the m15x and hence bring up the companys image again.

Surely they'l sort any probs (if there are any) before they send it out this time. It's one thing to make a mistake once, but if the m17x has the same sort of issues then they're gonna lose all credibility.

I asked AW Steve that very question, he said that the testing for the M17X had been basically improved (if that's the best word to use) since the problems with the M15X, so we should be able to have a M17X with any BIOS updates and drivers ready for full speed Sli.... well, in theory anyway?

I think that its still really funny like even if it did have problems I think i'd still end up buying, Id'no whats that phase "addicted like a fly to sh**"
Been thinking of packing it in and gettin the 1730, but then seeing that lappie today with montevina, makes ya wan't to hold on a little bit longer, I'd say it will be using montevina, plus having dual batteries is a major plus.

it's ridiculous that AW remains silent on it, at least if they'd state that it was Hardware problems, or supplier delays etc people would know where they stand.

i went ahead and got a 1730 instead, i'm not prepared to wait around for something that may or may not come especially with such a lack of information ( which is pretty unprofessional, considering when it was announced and the proposed release dates..)

to wait for a 17x would have meant waiting an unknown amount of time for the release, possibley waiting another few weeks for it to filter over to the UK, and even then the options i wanted may not be available, ala Skullcap on the 15x.

AW looks nice, love the name, always wanted a AW since i first found out about them online years ago, but i'm not prepared to sit in the dark.

that said, the XPS1730 is an absolute beast of a machine, and i have 0 regrets in getting it, despite me previous convictions about Dell's ability to produce a quality Gaming grade computer.

What exactly were the problems associated with the m15x? :S I keep hearing about that, but no one has been that specific. Is it anything dire? @_@

And GalaxyWolf...I might soon follow in your foot steps. I agree with you, its very unprofessional to leave customers in the dark.

I'm hoping that you got the LG screen, i've read some bad reports about the Samsung one that Dell use in the 1730, to be honest it the parts lottery that puts me off a bit. I prefer to know that all of the components are top-quality. Having said that i almost bought one after they were first released, except for the £4K+ price tag when fully loaded lol

Hope it works out good for you though.

Anyone know why the 9880gx2 couldn't be used instead of dual 8800 gtx's in sli? Granted the batts would be dessimated, but they would be anyway.
Been stalking nvidia's website - heat and so on seems to be comparable so???
One of them and montevina possibly, wouldn't the m17x be friggin amazing!!!

Isn't the 9880 GX2 a desktop card? If so it requires more power and space than a mobile card would do...

    Just my 2p.

    It would be great though...

Hmm.. I thought most graphics cards came out with the intention of been used initially as a desktop card and then modified later to make it smaller and hence fit in a laptop - looking at the pics it seems to be of comparable size and the power requirement is only 50 watts more than a single 8800gtx -
2*8800s= 2*450 = 900 watts of power being dissipated wheras 1 9800 gtx = 500 watt so should work power wise.

Also the tdp of the 9800 is only 197watts wheras the 8800gtx is
    180 watts*2 (sli) = 360 watts!

hence less power usage, less heat generation, same memory (1gb), better graphics performance, memory bandwidth

    - seems like a pretty good deal if you could fit it in

i dont see want your crying about lol, the m15x is smaller than the m17x. if you want a big screen connect it to a 56" hdtv like i do. thats way better than the 1.6" bonus inches on the m17x. i do however see why you would be upset if you needs dual graphics cards. of course sli is not worth the extra 500.

the m1730 is actually advertised as "the beast". not that it is. SLI will never get you double the GFX power, just like two-core-CPUs will never get you twice the processing power.
