    Hello NBR people!

I just registered after reading these forums for 1 month and i must say, this is an excellent forum and has helped me a lot!

Now comes my problem, i see it often mentioned that buying a computer with minimum RAM and then upgrading is an economical option. I'm considering buying an m15x as i need a computer rather soon and can't wait to mid july for ordering the M860TU. How do you upgrade the RAM, is it a difficult process and does it void your warranty cause from my understanding you have to open up the computer to upgrade?

I'm also a bit lost what RAM to buy, i'm living in Europe (Switzerland) and just wondering if anyone have any tips to well priced and compatible RAM that fits in the m15x for ordering online in Europe? I'm thinking of buying at the same time a can of air to stock up for cleaning my computer regularly so any shop that also sells cans of air would be great (to maybe save on shipping costs if that is possible?)

    Thanks for all help!

    Regards,

    Philip

    Hello Svarto.
    Welcome.
Regarding RAM, it's dead simple. Just have to take the cover from the base (unscrewing several screws) and then it's just EASY. If you go to AW website they will give you instructions on how to do this on the M15x. It does not void the warranty (changing the HDD also doesn't void it).
Regarding brand, go for Crucial or Corsair.

Finally, you will probably have to wait till the middle of July for the M15x to be shipped to you. There seems to be some delays in production at the moment (both in Europe and in the USA).

Memory is plug and play so all you have to do is take the bottom off and plug in the memory into the memory bay. very easy

I'm scratching my head on this one.

AW m15x barebones starts with 1 gig ram, to go to 4 costs you $300. For 667 ddr2. For the Studio XPS 16, going to 4 gig at initial spec costs you like $60.

    WTH??

A 4 gig 2x2 from any online retailer costs you like $40. This makes the Xbox 360 120 hdd seem like a stellar bargain. It's just freakin ridiculous, this is like a 20,000% markup or is my math bad. Just, criminal.

Most people dont by memory from Alienware, we take the one gig they give us, and buy 4 gigs from newegg.com for 50 bucks, and add it ourselves.

I saw your post on my review of the nagamaki, and AM sales the ocz whitebook also, for a fairly decent price, it is called the m17, and you can read lots of reviews in this forum about it.

on a side note, unless you want an enormous laptop, you might consider going smaller, Myself, I went through atleast half a dozen laptops before finnaly giving in and getting the laptop that I qwanted from the beginning, the m15x. For me nothing else would do. I don't like having second best, if you know what I mean.

But Mark at K|N is a great guy, He gave me a great deal, and was very understanding when I wanted to ship the nagamaki back after having it for less than 24 hours.

Hey, if you have time and inclination, could you email me at [email protected] and just blurb about the m15x? That's the strongest contender right now, that and RKC's MSI GT627, and I could use any little bit of feedback.

Man I love KN but I'm not really looking for a gaming rig, so it'd be a tough call to shell out those bucks. (Not to mention about $600 more than RKC for same specs.) I might do the Wakizachi MX for $2k, but it's a weaker gpu than m15x and much less battery life.

    Hi,

I'm sorry to bring this thread back from the dead but I think there is some important information missing.

I bought an M15x in 2008 with 4GB PC2-5300 667MHz ram. I have used the machine primarily for gaming and 3ds Max. I've noticed lately my machine becoming outdated as far as speed goes.

I bought 4GB of OCZ PC2-6400 800MHz ram and installed it, hoping to get a few more fps' in gaming and 3d design. I've found that the DRAM Frequency is still 667MHz!

So if you're going to purchase 3rd party memory you may run into problems such as BIOS restrictions, which I believe to be the problem, that will prevent the machine of making use of faster hardware.

I'm currently searching for a way to get my machine to make use of my new RAM and am considering doing a BIOS update with A/Ws help.

Its not only BIOS limitation. Also consider the permanent Hardware limitation.

I didn't think it was a hardware restriction because the laptop has an Intel Core 2 Duo X9000 with 800MHz FSB. So theoretically you should be able to get the RAM at 800MHz as well?

Chipset will only support 667MHz, but u can install 800Mhz. Will run little little faster because of latency.
